Make some sort of Wurm-type gamemode to go along with it.

Quest map? Like in Oblivion, you have to do a big quest/quests.

Quests would ruin it for people that want to use it in their own RPs or even for construction.

I just have started on my bigggest map project ever, i plan to release it when GMOD10 comes out.

The idea is a world that fills the entire hammer editor, it will have a lot of stuff to visit (imagine the Zelda games without loading).
I would be thankfull if anyone want to come with some great suggestion to what i can add into this map.

The method i have chosen to do is to draw a 4096x4096 texture (and adding detail shader) that i will expand over the entire editor on a terrain surface and form it, the same method used in games with huge terrain like Planetside, World of Warcraft etc.

Here is a simple sketch i have made, so you have an idea how it might look.

The green dots are trees. :P

Remember this drawing is not how the actual thing will look like, so come with suggestions!
Since it's not out yet, when will it be finished?

When it's done, i will never set any deadline for any project ever again. The deadline just never makes it. :P There is huge amount of work needed to make this map. it can take many weeks atleast.

No, i will not allow anyone to edit the map. I'm gonna put BSP decompiling protection in it.

Well at least that will keep the inexperienced mappers out, but some of us know how to defeat even the prefab, not to say I will do it or anything.

I had to put massive decompile protection on DM-Deck16][ because I couldn't count how many PMs I got from people that wanted the source to it.

It will keep the inexperienced people from decompiling it, but the experienced people shouldn't even have interest in modifiding the map. Because experienced mappers like to make original stuff i'm pretty sure of. Atleast i am.

I've been mapping since 1997, and still after all of these years I can never get any inspiration for a new map. Any little idea that I get usually ends up half way done, then I realize it was bad and it sits on my hard drive for eternity.

I probably have 4 CDs and 2 DVDs just for HL stuff, and other drives for older engines like Build, Unreal and Quake.

You give me a dumb, yet what you had before you edited just said "Erm not much interesting, i have started constructing the 3D mountain crap that will seperate areas in the map"

And then you posted the image.

Thanks, that was a really well deserved rating.

How is this going to work. The map is so big that it would take atleast more than 10 minutes to run across it.

This is better off as a seperate mod than a huge map.

He is making it in hammer, which is the map creator/editor that comes along with the source SDK. Open steam and click the tools tab, just double click to download.

I don't think bigger is needed. Besides he already has the displacements and stuff there.

He's already pushing Source engine to it's limits. There's no way he could run the map or even compile it if it was any bigger.

I haven't seen any actual numbers, how can you say this?

This image proves that it isn't nearly close to the max size of the map since he's almost on the end of one corner and can see all the way to the other corner. Source does not render geometry over a certain amount of units away, and that limit is about from one corner of Hammer to the center of Hammer.

    Thank you very much.

I'd like to give a helping hand. (With the mapping)
Do you have suggestions or do I have to give some ideas?

    EDIT:
I'm a huge fan of the Haunted Mansion and the Phantom Manor ride(s).
I'd like to make the outside of an abandoned Mansion, something like this:

Small graveyard, gate, fence, greenhouse, small towery thingy an maybe an enterable hall.

Infact, i'm far from at the end of the map, i took the pic there seens the volcano doesn't draw if i am at the end (source engine drawing limit)
It's pretty hard to make up any size on that pic, but trust me. it is VERY big. I'm constructing the map to give an epic feel to it. :P

note: I'm just using this texture temporary, i will make my own texture to fit the color of the map later.

Just a quick question, what setting is the map anyway? (an adventure map, I know that ;).
And does my little mansion idea fit in some woods somewhere?

I don't think so, unless he wants to do it himself. I can't remember where, and I'm too lazy to search, but he said he doesn't want any help with the map at all. But who knows; maybe he will.
