The Gooniverse is my first attempt at learning Hammer and at creating a complete map. I have created one or two small environments here and there, so even though I'm releasing this, it's only like my third map. I'm sure the more experienced map makers out there will spot tons of sloppiness or dumb things - however, I take a lot of pride in my art no matter what it is, so I've done everything that I could with my current skillset to deliver a polished, good-looking, and performance-sensitive map that I can. I think I did that, because I am very happy with the result!

So THIS IS THE GOONIVERSE! If you haven't heard of Something Awful, you're about to. We are a force across the internet, and now - THE GALAXY. The two private servers for members (or "goons"), one of which is mine, have provided me and others with ENDLESS entertainment and inspiration. These are some of the best Gmod players around folks. We love our spacebuild and I wanted to create a map with unique environments to reflect the creativity of the Goons and provide inspiration for further Spacebuild games.



I tried to keep my goals for the map pretty simple: my top priority was awesome visuals. My second priority - good performance. I tried to cut corners wherever I could, and add as many perfmormance-enhancing touches that I could (for instance each planet's atmosphere has an occluder, making it so you don't have to render props when you're not on a planet). the third was to make a balanced battleground for space wars etc., so I've placed two habitable planets across from each-other with evenly spaced settling areas (be it an asteroid belt or a planet). This is a good setup for fighting over resources like Tiberium.

OKAY ON TO THE FEATURES, these are the kinds of things you can expect from the map:

-6 original planets

-Hiigara: An earth-like homeworld.
-Kobol: Also earth-like, with a climate that has recently reached a livable state after an ice age. Also has some fun floating ice pieces (can be removed for fps boost)
-Coruscant: a metropolis, abandoned for hundreds of years. This planet makes a very good strategic "capture" point in space wars, given its location and architecture.
-Demeter: a mild but toxic planet. Thousands of years of fumes and corrosion has almost split this planet into space dust.
-Cerebrus: Closest to the sun, this now-inactive planet has been dried of all its liquids to create a barren wasteland of sand and... sand. This is the harshest planet to live on.
-Endgame: A magma-covered ball of ash and rock, with a series of volcanic tubes leading into a large underground cavity.


-colormod and bloom setting for each
-TWO immediately habitable planets
-a large asteroid belt
-a large prefab space station, ready for additions
(IMPORTANT: This station WILL drop your FPS by at least 20, however it is one giant physics prop, so use the REMOVER tool on it at the beginning of a game for a large performance increase)

WOW! Gorgeous map, I always thought that solarsystem_v2 is the greatest spacebuild map but yours looks SO much better.

Thanks guys I'm glad everyone likes it so much!

Just want to mention that the station is pretty much a WIP... I just now realized that I forgot to make the ladder work, plus its generally not quite finished. You can also move the station props, its kinda weird. That's part of the engine though, can't really change that. I might find a way around it though, I have a few ideas.

I'm not done with this map though! I hope to release a version 2 sometime soon.

yeah, there's an elevator and an airlock with two doors on the station. It can also be moved around by grabbing it with the physgun on the parts with brush geometry.

I just make it orbit Hiigara on my server, it was pretty cool :)

It will be up and running on my dedicated server in 10 minutes. Server has 100mb connection it is a 5 slot so you will have to join quickly. Here is the ip:195.78.83.149:27015 enjoy.

TO THE SERVER ADMINS:
Please let me know if you are getting random client timeouts. A recent update from valve has made players drop out due to overflow errors, and last night during beta we came to the conclusion that this map exasserbated the problem because of all the particles. I reduced them A LOT today before release so you should be okay.

Garry, do you have any idea wether or not I'm correct in this?

i was just playing and i got the error when entering Kobol ( i think that was it) and i get one CLoverflow error (or something like that) :( i hope this can be fixed

I loved playing Homeworld 2, pity it doesn't work on my computer anymore.

Loving this map, it rocks.

Only one problem, the ice flows on the 2nd earth planet can be picked up with the psychics gun, and whack other players/ships off the planet.

and the space station needs to be permanently frozen in space and closer to earth, making it easier to get there without your resources running out.

And the main one, overall: I get pulled down, while in space, which is supposed to have no gravity

Apart from that, this map rules!

Any time I enter a planet my gmod crashes with the overflow thing I have only been able to stay on earth or in space.

the ice pieces are actually func_physbox_multiplayer entities, to help the ambiance of the melting ice. If you're not into that however, they act just like normal props so you can use the remover tool on them.

The logic behind the space station being so far off is so that it can be "colonized" just like a planet. Also, if you ever decide to have a space RP and have one team set their spawn points on the other earth-like planet, it's not that far anymore. The asteroid belt and the station are meant to be mirrored settling areas.

Also, if you are saying your PLAYER is falling in space you'll have to switch the gamemode to spacebuild. The station not responding to nogravf is out of my control - I think that support for func_physboxes has to be added to spacebuild for it to work. But you wouldn't really want that thing floating around in space anyway.

Hey give it a shot, in my experience so far it's about on the smae level at gm_solarsystemv2. As the game goes it it might end up a little laggier but like I say you can always use the remover on some of the extras.

Actually the map was created FOR Something Awful plus it's NAME is Gooniverse. I'm pretty sure the context was needed plus the goons deserve credit since they helped with suggestions and testing.

I don't know how many times it has crashed my pc now I have a really good pc as well I hit 300fps on hl2 full graphics.

So I emailed Garry about getting some details on this overflow stuff. At this point its looking like I will make a patched version of the map with less particles, less func_physboxes, etc. I guess this will be considered a "lite" version of the map.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to change and compile it today, and release it tonight sometime. No promises but I will try.

Thanks everyone, again. The new version of the map is compiling right now. Give me about an hour or two after it compiles to get it all zipped up and uploaded.

If you still get overflow errors after this it HAS to be Valve's fault... these errors have been rampant in Gmod ever since the update two or three days ago.

I've been getting such an overflow on my friends server. Like slowly my fps goes down and down and then i just get the cutlink whatever crap.

I run the GGG server on SA, amirite runs Riteland. This map is amazing, and we have been beta testing it for over a week now. rite, you are awesome :)

P.S. Those overflow errors happen on GGG too on freespace, so it is not your map. (Although all the smoke could raise the probability of it happening, but you did fix that)


Oh also, about the SA promotion: This map was made by amirite for goons, he released it here to let the rest of the community in on it. Not to mention this was developed and tested on SA private servers.

Well folks I gotta appologize. I have no idea whats going wrong with the overflows. I am getting reports that this new version is actually WORSE which boggles my mind. I am going to sleep on this problem after I figure out a few things on it tonight - I will update everyone on where I'm at.

THANK YOU THANK YOU everyone for the tremendous support. I knew I had a good map on my hands, but its great to see that I can help the community out as well!

My suspicion is now that the func_physbox_multiplayer entities are stopping things up. I'm running a test on my server right now with all of the physboxes REMOVED, so we'll see how it goes!

Not too well, just crashed.


We think it's a new engine update valve pushed last week, my server GGG (also SA and sister server to amirites's Riteland) has been getting these overflow errors on freespace rarely, maybe 2 or 3 per day, instead of the 2 or 3 per hour we get on Riteland with gooniverse. People also complain of FPS drop before a crash.

We think something is wrong with the engine, and the new map triggers it to crash faster, so we are hoping garry and/or valve know of this error and will hopefully roll back the changes (valve), or I don't know, fix it? Again, this is valve and not garry, because on GGG for example, these rare overflow errors started after last weeks valve update.

Works fine with me,just loaded up a server to see how well it runs and it is perfect! Only problem i have is,can you make the space station unable to fall to the ground? If you touch it with the phsygun it just drops.

Favorite map so far (and probably will be untill v2 comes out!)

Only problem I have for it so far is that the skin on Endgame doesn't work for me (I get the pink and black) can you tell me how to fix it?

Well, I was trying to set up a project and I would lke to get you on board (due to you amazing mapping skills).

That's because the func_physbox entity doesn't respond to the no-grav in spacebuild. The station will be static as part of the fixed map however.

EDIT: The pink and black on Endgame is actually because its a CS texture, I'll include it in the bsp on the fixed version.

I love this map but did you use some textures from some ohter steam game? When i get to the real hot planet with lava the ground is pink and black :(

Great map. Truely the mapping surprise of the week.

I did find a map hole under the ocean in the ice planet from battlestar. It's just under the island with mountains, there are no textures there in one point.

I am using func_dustclouds, indeed. Do you know of any documentation on this? I'd really like to keep them in but if I find hard evidence that they cause the problem I'll happily take them out.

Also, to you people getting pink and black on the Magam Planet - it's actually a CS texture on the terrain. I will include it in the next BSP, its only one texture, I'm sure valve won't mind.

Update for everyone: I'm beginning to get suspicious of the func_physboxes, I am assembling a new version now. I will be beta testing it on my server and if it goes by without ANY hitches, then I'll be able to release it tonight for good! Thanks for your patience again.

Tie all the func_dustclouds to a visgroup and hide it, then when the problem is fixed you can reenable them.

gm_solarsystem had the same problem.

Edit:

If you want to substitute them I think func_smokevolume works fine.

Actually everything works great for me. No crashes or errors. A little lag here and there when I load the map but other than that. I have NO PROBLEMS.
