Modulus Software Presents... Hoverboard

*** WARNING: HIGHLY ADDICTIVE MATERIAL BELOW ***

Info: This SENT/Scripted Vehicle hybrid allows you to skate around the level on a hoverboard. Complete with jumping, twisting, boosting and grinding, the hoverboard uses a unique system of physics simulation to provide smooth and easily controlled movement.

Controls: Face the direct you want to go and press forward. Jump power is relative to how fast you are going. Pressing strafe buttons in mid air will rotate you respectively. Pressing duck will temporarily disable the hover mechanism and allow you to grind. (note: the board will hover over water but not under water. Additionally, you cannot jump while over water). Pressing sprint will engage your boost thruster. The trails identify the booster state. Blue = ready, Red = boosting, Yellow = charging.

Other Info: The UT3 hoverboard model was compiled by Jinto. Coding was a collaboration between Jinto and I. The sounds are all ripped from base HL2 content. Clients will download required content when joining servers.

More Shit: It works very well in both single and multiplayer. We chose quality over quantity which means if you have too many of them in a server, you will experience lag. The reason being is the physics simulation is not an easy equation, and is called very often. Don't bitch about it because without it, the movement wouldn't be as good as it is. We're not going to change it. Jinto spent a lot of time optimizing it as best as he could. Also, we won't change it so you can attack while riding it, deal with it or change it yourself. There is probably more I should say, but can't think of it at the moment.

Disclaimer: Playing with this is incredibly addictive. I say that with experience. Jinto and I had a hard time keeping our 2 day project deadline because we couldn't concentrate on coding, and kept finding ourselves dicking around on them. (yes it took us 2 days... so what, big whoop, want to fight about it?)

  • Removed unused code and did various code cleaning
  • Fixed misc issues with eye angles and
  • Added ability to get a "running start" when jumping on hoverboard
  • Added proper icons and messages for kills and deaths
  • Added various missing language strings
  • Added secondary fire to STOOL (automatically mounts newly created hoverboard)
  • Customizable hover height and view distance

Addictive, that's an understatement. I do believe we spent more time playing around with it than writing it. But it still got done, and turned out awesome. Hope you guys have as much fun with it as we've had making it.

i ALMOST made a backflip, but the hoverboard is a bitch to turn :(

also i get killed most of the times trying to go up the ramp :(

Simply awesome. Any chance of seeing a skateboard or Back to the Future version? I know there are models of both. In any case, yes, it's very addicting, great for race maps.

Being my tinkering self, I lowered the height that the hoverboard hovers and the boost rate; I'm not being sarcastic when I say it was awesome when it drove itself into the ground, because it shows that all the fancy turning and stuff is actual physics. Quick question though; why are you using a good deal of render.DrawBeams instead of an env_particletrail

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but after I installed this, I've experienced horrible lag on my server. (hosting on my own computer so it shouldn't lag)

I don't know.

Edit:

Yeah, they eat cpu on my computer.

Nice anyway, i wonder if it lags.


It shouldn't lag that much since i can play UT3 on full with almost no lag, i wonder... can you make that rope thing, where you can attach yourself after a vehicle?

It is VERY hard to just press use and get off, I usually get off only if I die (which usually happens when it rolls over or goes underwater while the jets are inactive)

Beyond amazing, probably the best thing since... hoverballs.

(P.s. Jinto, are you still working on your lightsaber?)

Some things I think it could use:

* Ability to shoot while on the hoverboard. Probably not though, as animations for that would be a pain.
* Player should play crouching animation when holding crouch on the board.

Now to see how easy/hard it is to knock myself off one.

OK, collision detection is a bit iffy, in that there's none on the player. I got through the window on construct just by fitting the board through the window. The speed of turning is also a tad slow, but I can tweak that myself. All in all, a fine piece of work. Good job, Fozzy and Jinto.

Yes they do, but he had nothing to propel himself with. It hovered over the water just fine.

How To do a Flip.

1.Spawn your hoverboard
2.Set a thruster with 500000 power or more,the more powerful the better you flip do not be afraid to got into the millions my other video is done at 50000000 thrust,now attatch that thruster to the rear of the board at the bottom facing straight ot slightly down
3.get on the board and use the thruster then do a jump and while in the air and still holding the thruster on lean to one side you should flip.

Its very simple yet very fun.

Sorry for using fraps i just got a new pc and nothing is installed yet and source recorder was not being a pain so i had no choice, but its only short so i am sure you will cope.
