In the last Phx pack, the collision models were crap and caused extreme lag. (And unlike the other guy, I'm not saying that through hearsay, I'm saying it because I know how to compile models myself AND have tested them on dedicated servers against other props.) Has this been fixed?
For example, if you turn on your netgraph on a completely empty server and spawn a blue barrel, which should be more complex than a Phx prop, you get a small spike. If you spawn a Phx 2x2 panel, which should have a simple box for a collision model, it creates a HUGE spike.
I do hope this has been fixed, because this is one of the key reasons I avoid Phx and have kept Phx off of servers I've admined in the past, and one of the things the Spacebuild Model Pack doesn't do, which is what makes them so lag-free and useful.
The phx models are high poly because it makes them look better. However, there are more types of plates, such as the plastic plates, which, if you take a look at their wireframe, are very simple and not costly to render, unlike the metal plates, which do infact have a more complex poly makeup. Most people use the regular phx plates though, for the simple reason that they look better, and have a decent weight. As for the spike caused by spawning the phx panel may be just your system, as I can spawn a 4x4 plate with no spiking above normal. By the way, the spacebuild models are nice, they do actually cause more lag visually than the phx props, because they have more complex polygon structures than say a plate or a triangle. This does make them look better, and makes them easier to work with, however, they are infact laggier than the phx props.
