Current public version: 1.11

What is this gamemode?

Infected Wars is a mix of Counter-Strike, Zombie Survival, Quake and Crysis. It features fast-paced gameplay in which the human Special Forces need to stand up against the ever growing power of the Undead Legion.

In short: zombie apocalypse on steroids.

The Special Forces win by surviving a set amount of time, or by depleting the undead reinforcements. The Undead Legion wins by killing all the humans.

Features
  • Crysis-like power selection: select between four different powers to enhance your performance! Scroll down for more info.
  • Two teams, a lot of classes: do you prefer stealth or are you a run and gunner? No matter, everyone will find a suitable class in both teams! More info below.
  • Wide range of weapons: shotguns, snipers, assault rifles, tripmines, proximity bombs, turrets companions and so on!
  • Achievements and unlockable loadouts: everyone wants his performance rewarded, so why not in this gamemode? Get the specific achievements to unlock new loadouts for each class.
  • Place your own spawnpoint: the undead have the ability to place sacrificial babies which will act as spawnpoints once you get killed. Don't get too careless though, the humans can destroy these spawnpoints just as easily as you place them.
  • Modifiable crosshair: change your crosshair to a different design, colour or visibility.
  • Gore: explosions and close-up shotgun blasts have never been this beautiful.
  • Extensive derma menu: selection of classes, information, graphic options. Everything is displayed in a practical menu.
  • Inbuild admin addon: simple set of admin commands including level changing, and player slay/ban/kick/bring/goto abilities.
  • Dynamic mapcycle: the map system does NOT use mapcycle.txt, instead add the maps in options_server.lua. There you can specify the minimum or maximum amount of players needed before the map is chosen.

Powers

All the human classes have a Power Suit (somewhat based on the Nano Suit from Crysis). It allows them to quickly enhance different abilities like speed and armor. Each power influences your suitpower. Once you're out of suitpower, you automatically return to Armor mode.

Here's a list of the 4 powers and their characteristics:

* Armor - Nullifies bullet/explosion damage. Drains suitpower with every hit. Stops working if your suitpower is too low.
* Speed - DOUBLES walking and running speed. Also greatly increases jump height. de_port became one big playground because of this power. Drains suitpower while moving.
* Vision - Based on TetaBonita's xray script, this power allows the user to look through walls and detect invisible threats. Drains suitpower while used.
* Regen - No armor, no speed, and no enhanced vision. This mode is used to quickly regenerate suitpower (and a little health), which you'll need more than often.

Classes

Each team has their own set of classes. Every class has a different set of loadouts the player can choose from.
  • SPECIAL FORCES
    • Assault: an all-round class armed with both an assault rifle as well as a shotgun. Effective on both long range as well as close-quarters combat!
    • Scout: a sniper rifle and a set of tripmines make this class an excellent choice for reconnaissance missions. Find the undead before they find you.
    • Support: armed with the strongest weapons and a set of proximity mines, this class is sure to keep the undead outside the door!
    • Supplies: squads won't survive long without one. Has the ability to heal and resupply team members.
    • Experimental: not the strongest soldier on the field, but with the weaponry he's wielding, probably one of the most enduring. His power based weaponry is fuelled by suit power! Is accompanied by a deadly turret that can be instructed to defend areas.
  • UNDEAD LEGION
    • Behemoth: leader of the undead legion. Only one player can play this class at the time! Its mighty meatrocket launcher is capable of breaking even the strongest defenses.
    • Zombie: can't have an undead army without one. Specializes in longer distances compared to other classes. The demon rifle is feared amongst campers.
    • Stalker: a nearly invisible undead that stalks its prey. Can scream to disorient the enemy. The element of surprise is its primary weapon!
    • Bones: not very strong, but very agile zombie. Can run at great speed and jump large distances. The bane of all runners!
    • Warghoul: a supportive type of undead. Has the ability to mark the players to other undead and much more.

Known bugs:

- none!

Map exploits:

Because of the Speed power, a lot of areas that are not supposed to be accessible are very much reachable. This makes some maps practically unplayable. I've made a solution though: if you have a map with exploitable areas, you can seal of these areas with the admin_exploitblocker weapon (this is not given at start, admins can type "!swep <youringamename> exploitblocker" to receive it). At the end of the round these blockades you made using this tool will be saved and stored for future rounds.

- croxmeister (radial menu)

- Garry (egon swep code, and gmdm gibbing)
- Dark Moule (egon swep fixing and custom materials)
- Sgt. Kanonenfutter (for a few killicons and for being a great admin)

A quick hotfix. Hopefully this reduces the amount of crashes caused by the gore. If not, toggle the gore in the F3 options menu!

(if some Lua god can find the exact source of the crashes, please let me know!)

EDIT: hotfix is included in the 1.01 version

Nice to see this finally finished. It is, I think, one of the most completed gamemodes out there, in respect to consistency, balancing and knowing-what-the-hell-you-are-doing. So, well done!

Thanks, I appreciate it :)

There's still a minor issue with the gore though. People tend to crash sometimes when a player gets blown apart. If anyone can find out what exactly is going wrong... it basically the same gore as in GMDM but with a few different vectors for directions.

I'm hearing more and more crashing issues. I seriously hope Garry can help out with the crashlogs I send him :(

I'm now totally disabling the gore on our server until I've got this fixed. But I'm afraid I'm sometimes seeing evidence that it's not only the gore...

Sometimes when the game ends your console gets spammed with "
ParticleEmitter: Couldn't make emitter! Too many emitters!
entities/sacrifical_baby/cl_init.lua:26: attempt to index local 'emitter' (a nil value)"

I'll fix that in the next version. Thanks for the heads up!

That's weird. I think it's scriptenforcer. I've seen cases where it completely halts Lua execution on certain clients. Download the gamemode and tell me if it works when you test locally.

I still haven't found the exact cause, and Garry hasn't responded to my mail yet. I'll be optimizing some code and see if that works. If so, there'll be a patch before you know it!

Appears I broke a few things on the official server yesterday. Sacrificial babies are now working again, and I fixed a corrupt weapon model that crashed the server. Neither of them should affect the current downloadable version!

I'm going to work on the gore now, hoping to find a good fix.

Maybe you should remove the gore feature until you can find a fix.
Great mod by the way.

I've been tweaking a bit and it seems people are crashing a lot less now. But still no complete cure, sorry. Nonetheless, this 1.01 version is perfectly playable!

- Optimized particles

Well, joined the official server and played about 2 minutes after my gmod crashed without any reporting. The reason might be the intense blood splash after killing one. Try to reduce them.

You can turn off gore in the F3 window.

Yet it also seems people with gore turned off are crashing sometimes. Maybe it's related to something else...? I really don't know :(

Did you try a complete reinstallation of Garry's Mod? I never found a specific addon to be conflicting with the gamemode. I think it's something changed within GMod itself.
