The models and textures are all in the vpk files in the left 4 dead directory. No one has, at least publicly, found a way to identify and separate the files contained within these vpk archives. As a result, no one is probably working on this - we can't even get the models in the first place.

However, garry still could be doing this. It's just unlikely.

Here is how it will be.

Wait for full release that will be on 18th nov.
Then let's wait till garry works on a update to make the stuff work on gmod.
And stop asking. Everything will be done in no time.

So just be patient.

The full game will probably in a GCF and then Garry can just update gmod with the new engine and mount the GCF.

Garry will upgrade the engine to Left4Dead-engine.

I remember someone saying that somewhere.

uh when the game comes out

Edit:

I’m starting to get a lot of question about this and I guess they aren’t going to slow down until I tell ya’ll where I stand on it.

Ideally, I want to upgrade to the l4d engine. But this would probably mean increasing the requirements for GMod again. The Orange Box upgrade wasn’t so bad, because the requirements upgrade wasn’t really required, it just meant that if you had a below spec computer you couldn’t see the new particles. I’m not sure that would be the case in a change to the new engine.. but if it is then yeah, definitively upgrading. If not then I need to balance the demand for an upgrade with the amount of people that are under that requirement, and would lose access to GMod completely.

Another option would be to stick with the current engine and try to import the l4d content into it. This however would likely result in it all looking like shit due to shader differences. Plus, GMod would have stopped evolving.. and I don’t really want that to happen.

The final option would be to split GMod in two. One version would be the current version, and one on the new engine. I really don’t want to do that, because it’s short sighted and stupid.

A friend of mine posted a few VPK files on the XeNTaX message board (forum accounts there need to be activated by the admin, his was activated, not mine...), we'll have to see if they will crack these files and add support for cracking them to their game extracting program, MultiEX Commander

I'm glad to know that Garry is thinking about all his fans and not just NEW TECH? SHOVE IT INTO THE GAME PRONTO! I have a gaming computer, but I used to be one of those guys who had to use mom and dad's shitastic setup that they bought from the store thinking that it would be good due to the high price tag. Garry + Valve FOREVER.

Most likely. I haven't tried the l4d demo yet, but there is probably a way to only disable the Director, making it easy to implement a button for it.(Not sure if the Director would be in the game, but just in case.)

That's not true. You can open them up in a text editor and identify files by their headers and extract them manually.

I tried this, but all it does is show an Encrypted file or nothing at all for me.

Okay, I've extracted all the content from the preorder vpk's, renamed all the dud vmt viles, and copied all the files over, yet spawning a character in Gmod leaves that character to become invisible.

Any help?

You need to copy the .vtx file 3 times and rename them

*.sw.vtx
*.dx90.vtx
*.dx80.vtx

e.g

survivor_teenangst.sw.vtx
survivor_teenangst.dx90.vtx
survivor_teenangst.dx80.vtx
