The trial against pirate bay was ended today.
The four men behind pirate bay was found guilty, and sentenced to 1 year prison and 30 millions (SEK) fine. (3,6 million USD)
The judgement will be appealed.

This trial will be used as a reference in other prosecutions

"The trial against pirate bay may need be re-done. After a perusal done by P3 News, the judge, Tomas Norström has been accused of having connections with movie and music industry lawyers in the trial. The judge is also a member in the Swedish Anti-pirate bureau. On top of that, he sit in the committe of Swedish association of industrial legal protection (an association that handles questions about patent)
The judge was also working extra in stiftelsen.se, where one of his colleagues was a lawyer for film and music companies in the trial"

Tomas himself said "I don't think I'm challengeable for being in those involvements."

I think they would have fared better if they didnt promote themselves as an illegal pirating website. It says on their front page Download, music, movies, games, and Software! Sites like demonoid don't come under attack because they have terms and conditions and user agreements that basically say nothing is hosted by them and its the responsibility of the user to download what they should legally be downloading.

It's their own fault for advertising the illegal content on the front page and ignoring the handfuls of emails they got to remove torrents: http://thepiratebay.org/legal

Summary of the above URL : tons of companies that make a shit ton more than TPB would ever make asked them to take down their illegal torrents and they said "no lolol we will never tak down illegal torrents fight the oppression"

Yeah but they aren't in danger in being arrested or sued personally, sure their website may come under attack but not the owners.

They also don't make sarcastic emails like this (http://static.thepiratebay.org/ea_response.txt) and think they're high and mighty because they're based in Sweden. Justice was served.

Honestly, I wouldn't be proud if it led to my arrest and a 3.6$ million dollar fine. I don't have that kind of money laying around.

It's not just the US that wants them gone, Sweden does too. They wanted to log the ips of people who visit the site but I don't think that was ever passed.

It kinda sucks that pirating puts developers off pc development, but it can be useful if, for example, you break the disc. I've done this a few times where I've owned the game and broken the disc, but still have the serial.

because people like to get free videogames and the "man" is trying to take down one of their only sources. They think this is an intrusion on their rights or some bullshit so they support the people that host their videogames.

It sucks, if I were a game dev I'd go on these sites myself to see if my game was being pirated or not. It's a luxury, if you can't afford to buy it then what right do you have to get it for free?

If you read most of the comments on their "trial" page, most of their users sound like they're 11 years old.
