Name: Delirium
Genre: FPS/Horror/Psychological Horror
Engine: Source 2007
Year: TBA

“Delirium” follows the psychological horrors of a man named Miles Dennison, a deranged killer. Miles is in his thirties, and has been diagnosed with numerous mental disorders. Schizophrenia and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder appear to be most notable.
A group of students at Stanford University have been researching mental instability in humans, and have developed a device capable of taking a persons dreams and displaying them as video. Not only does this allow for a greatly enhanced look at what a disorder can cause in a person, it also gives the field of psychology a wealth of new knowledge.
Miles Dennison was chosen as one of the test subjects, due to his unique combination of disorders, out of a handful of one-hundred. The team only needs around thirty tests to have sufficient information on Miles Dennison. (So thirty levels in other words.)
The main objective behind the game is the students use of Miles Dennison in an attempt to increase the knowledge on delirium and dementia in humans.

The player is essentially being put in the crazy dreams of Miles Dennison. But, what makes this so different? Nothing actually hurts you. There’s violence and all that stuff, but rather than dying, you go into cardiac arrest when your "Self-Awareness" meter reaches zero. If that happens, you are simply ejected from the machine and are revived. But this will put a toll on you. You end up becoming more and more susceptible to going into cardiac arrest and then eventually go into a permanent coma/vegetative state . The only way to prevent your self-awareness meter from dropping is to stop taking damage. Over time it will replenish. If you desperately need it, then there will by some type of entity to replenish it.

There’s no crazy monsters, and not all the dreams are insane. Some start off peaceful, while others are scary as all hell. But, this being a psychological horror, psychological being the key word, I’d like to keep the zombies and monsters on low.

So, here’s what I need from you.

- Mappers
- Modelers
- Texture Artists (Maybe. I definitely don’t want ALL the vanilla stuff)
- Sound Artists (Voice Actors. Have an artist for the soundtrack.)
- Suggestions
- More Writers
- SUPPORT FROM A COMMUNITY
- Concept Artists

If you want to help, PM me your Steam Name.

UPDATES
6/13/2009:
CHANGED: Changed concept of going into cardiac arrest. There is now going to be a Self-Awareness meter, much like the Synchronization Bar in Assassin's Creed. When it reaches zero, you go into cardiac arrest. The only way to replenish it is to stop taking damage and to give it time to fill back up.
CHANGED: Rather than dying, you go into a permanent coma/vegetative state.
CHANGED: Name is now "Delirium." It seems more fitting, eh?
ADDED: There won't be any invisible walls. Instead, when the player heads into an out of bounds zone, they will start to loose self-awareness and the area around them will start to corrode and dematerialize until the player reaches their perma coma. The way to stop this is to simply walk back to the in-bound zones and let the bar replenish.
ADDED: Miles Dennison now has a past as a psychotic murder.

PROGRESS
Writing: 8%
Modeling: 0%
Mapping: 0%
Music: 10% (Here's a taste of the soundtrack if you're interested.)
Voice Acting: 0%
Texturing: 0%
Overall Development: Will Begin on 6/18/09 (Developer Copies will consist of vanilla models and textures. The RCs will not.)

The Team
Lead Writer: Spartan769 (AKA Haloguy234)
Assistant Writer: GeForce
Assistant Writer: Raccoon12
Music Composer: NemesisTheory
Texture Artist: Spartan769 (AKA Haloguy234)
Lead Compiler: Raccoon12
Assistant Compiler: Spartan769 (AKA Haloguy234)
Assistant Compiler: {NBG} Nexazus

All we need now is a skilled mapper, a skilled compiler, and a few more voice actors!

So, what do you guys think about this? I haven’t seen much of any of this done before. So I assume it’s semi-original and creative.

Thanks! After I played Dear Esther, I had a sudden knack for a game kind of like it. And when I noticed hardly none existed, I thought I'd come up with one.

Surley you can just make this a buttload of effects with triggerhurts. In which case you can just have a very basic map (Imagine the time that would same :P)

Hopefully that means you're going to do texture work.

Making the mod is the foremost priority compared to PR.

True, but I don't know anything about texturing in Source. I'll have to check in on that.

I have a level idea.

You start off in the woods its sunny and nice you walk over to a house once in the house if you look at a painting of a lake and a girl standing near the shore the environment suddenly changes to nightmarish world where everything is all dark purple for no reason. You venture your way through the Spooky environment and reach the same lake in the picture and sure enough the girl is there. She Teleports up to you says something and you are forced out of the machine that projects dreams and well now you have an antagonist.

Interesting. I was wanting some type of an antagonist. But not one that is generated from actions. The way the antagonist you are describing is along the lines of what I want. A creepy element conjured up from the main character.
I like it.

I was thinking about it, then I noticed you had to have some form of content. I have zip content right now, other than the writing.

Edit: I wonder if they'll let me post it if I put up a teaser trailer that doesn't contain actual gameplay footage. I could also get to work on concept art, but I'm not very good at it. But I could try.

Name me a mod out there that withholds concepts like these. All the psychological horror type of mods I've seen are total shit. I'd really like to change that.

Edit: Paranoia is an exception. That looked amazing, but I couldn't play it because I don't have Half-Life. D:
If Penumbra is a Source Mod, then right there is a mod that is a hella good psychological horror. (I'd get Penumbra, but I haz no munnies)

I don't recall that ever happening. Don't you know what a team is? Not one person takes credit. The team behind it does. At what point did I ever say I was taking all the credit? Never. I'm not a douchebag.

Yup.

Also, I didn't know that coding was necessary. It's going to be built on the Episode 2 Engine, with a base code and everything.

Edit: Isn't the coding aspect of a mod covered by the compiler?

If your following with the little girl, make her a childhood friend that evolves into his love interest and first kill

Or his younger sister or daughter that he killed : \

Also if your going with the transition to creepy have one of the levels start off with the protagonist walking through a city and then going up an apartment building because he saw the little girl at the top. As he ascends the building the areas become more dimly lit, shadows streak across the walls. Nothing ever pops out at you until you reach the end of the final floor where the walls ooze blood, broken childrens toys lay across the floor, the area is almost pitch black but you can see the ethereal form of a child or walking past you very briefly. When you reach the end you find a dead end, and when you look behind you the girl stands there staring at you.
Not so much scary as it is for the environmental feel

Hey dude, if you need me to do some concept art I can definitely pitch in. Right now I'm working on an indie game (not a sourcemod) with "Something Cryptic" but if I can make money off this project, then I'd have more incentive to finish work for you first, or at a faster pace than with SC. Otherwise though, I'll just work equally on both.

-I do my conceptual artwork in 3d, making it faster and easier to make the concept, as well as the multiple viewpanes and detail close-ups for a character/weapon/theme, all from one render.
-I'm home during the day (Eastern standard time)

PM me if you're interested in me joining the team and contributing. This sounds like an interesting project.

Edit:

Here's an example of some of my work: (sorry for the shitty pixelizing; it's a jpeg)

That took me ~1 hour.

I was looking at the idea of the protagonist being a former murderer on the front page, and I think it is a tad cliched. Maybe, he accidentally killed someone, and due to intense grief and misery, he started developing crippling psychological disorders that made him start actually thinking he was murdering people.

Maybe not terribly factual, but a good start in my eyes.

Why, Levithan?
I completely leave my Adventuring puzzle games behind me, then you drive me to shame by posting my favorite.

I like this idea, but I can't really contribute, because you already have 3 writers and what looks like 3 other people volunteering. Still, it would be a good idea to not give much about the character up front, and instead learn about what happened and what he did through out the game. Also, him accidentally killing someone that he is close to and becoming insane sounds pretty good to me.

You should have the beginning go like this-
You walk into a suburban house. Inside everything's perfectly clean, nothing out of order. you can walk around it. upstairs in the bedroom there's a key. When you walk up to it you pick it up. (As a weapon.)
Downstairs the doors to the kitchen are closed and locked. When you open it (With the key) the screen tints red, crazy effects n' shiz. inside the kitchen organs and flesh are hanging from the ceiling and everything is covered in blood.

I think a good way to handle it would be to 'build up'.

Say, the first few levels just have 'ordinary' mentally taxing things. A bomb goes off at your office, Gunmen storm a bus, you come home to a knife weilding wife.

-Those- levels, where ordinary shit takes a wrong turn, and you need to cope.

Then get into more 'bizzare' things that are still fairly pedestrian. Falling dream like landscape, A room with no exits, a maze.

Then you can let shit out of the can and have some fun.

You could even go so far as to say the students are inducing these dreams to see how they differ between people like the protagonist, and normal people.

I feel like I want to help but I cant do much so yeah.
I can map but I have little skill so I have no released maps
I have some minor story skill
and I have a good eye for horror even though I do not watch the genre I do have a feel for insanity storytelling

also side note    is this the classic bait and switch of you are killing civilians and officers?    in spoilers to save cutbacks on story killing
