A few weeks after applying for a place on an A-Level photography course at college i got a letter through my door telling me that the course was over subscribed, and so to select the students to allow onto the course those of us that were still interested had to submit a portfolio of our work, the best 15 (there were 15 places on the course) would be chosen.
Luckily for me, i got a place on the course, here are the some of the pictures i used for my portfolio. (I doubt i'll ever be able to find all of them again, my laptop is slowly cannibalising itself). Just to let you guys know, all the picture is this thread are protected under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works liscene, which can be viewed here:

Without further ado, here is the selection that i offer to dearest facepunch:
For all of these pictures i was using my Nikon D60 with either the 18-55mm stock lens for my 55-200mm lens. I know the watermarks can get a bit annoying, but i've been doing that will all my recent photos as i was having a problem with people swiping them and claiming them to be their own. If you'd like a full size, unwatermarked version of one to use as a wallpaper or something, just PM me and i will happily supply.

Needs less beach photo's. Overall, I'm not too impressed. But with a bit of work they could be much better. Also, I find the numerous beach photos very repetitive.

First off, congrats and good luck to you for getting into that course, but here are a few tips that I could give to you for future shoots.
Horizon: For most cases where they are present, they need to be dead straight. With the possible exception of the one with the chalk artist, your attempt at making a good photo with a wonky horizon has unfortunately failed in my opinion.
ISO: In many of your photos (especially the fifth one) there seems to be a rather amount of noise (meaning a high ISO level) for the lighting conditions. Unless you are using Auto/Flashless Auto mode, you should always put a slower shutter speed or higher aperture level over a higher ISO, as the picture will always turn out clearer.
Variety? For most cases, I would only show the one best shot of a subject doing a particular activity. Unless there are two absolutely FLAWLESS photos of one particular thing, I always would stick by this rule. It seems the chalk drawer, while being quite interesting, seemed to dominate the portfolio and that really ruined parts of it for me.

When you submit them, leave them free of deviantart watermarks.
It'll piss them off because they didn't ask for obtrusive watermarking. I'd drop the boat loaded with people photograph, it's not as good as the others.

I'd watermark anything I produced. If a huge corp steals a picture that isn't watermarked and uses it then you might not get a penny for it or you'll get sued for trying.

As long as you have the original photo there is nothing that can stop you from suing them for it.
There is no need to put a watermark on your shit to copyright it, anything you've made is yours, no matter what. You don't need to say it, the copyright is there from the start. The only thing you actually would need to say is "Can be used for commercial usage" if you allow people to use it freely.
Of course by saying jack shit there will probably be people using your shit and then trying to say "but you didn't say anything about it on your picture", but that has nothing to say really, though if you don't say anything and they are only using it in a non-profit way you shouldn't be an ass and say they aren't allowed to do it. And if it's something they earn money from friends I still wouldn't complain about it.
