Modern Warfare 2 and the UK have been strange bedfellows in the media lately, with news that Activision will raise the price of the game to £54.99 (nearly $90). According to game industry mogul (and former Sony Europe boss) Chris Deering, the price hike isn't high enough. Deering tells MCV that blockbuster games simply aren't being produced efficiently enough, saying that the price of such games would actually have to cruise up to £70 ($115!) in order to support the industry as they once did.

That said, Deering realizes that there is "a psychological glass ceiling" for the amount consumers are willing to spend, and notes, "Consumers won't spend more, but to write the game, publishers are having to spend more than ever before. That's the key problem."

Of course, the flipside of this is that game prices could be lower if they were produced more efficiently -- or if the games market grew large enough to support the industry by buying more copies. But $115 games? Ouch.
Activision, biggest douche in the Gaming Industry since 2002.

I think $115 was what I paid for Fallout 3 Collectors, either that or it was $95. But racking up the normal games is just going to cost the company.

I won't even pay the outrageous price of $70 CAD that some games go for. Hell, I won't even pay $50 anymore.

70 quid is way to much for a game. Should be paying that kind of money for some serious hardware or something never that much for a game that will last under a day.

The way to stop pirating is to sell the games cheap. Find a way to do that, or keep loosing profit. No one want's to pay the currant price for games as it is, what made them think 70 quid is alright?

If publishers would stop being such money hungry cunts developers could earn more money selling them at a lower price.

That's not everything. The main issue with steam is large developers contract with large publishers before selling the game on D2D distributors. For the game to get onto steam a share of the money has to go to steam, the publishers and finally the developers. This is why the more popular games are more expensive on steam.

If you take the publishers out of the question, you get a large share going to the developers where it should go, and a small portion going to steam.

You do realize Activision are only doing this (or, were only doing this) because apparently they've been "hit with the recession" or something akin too that. Now, Activision are quite a big company, and they've produced a fair few popular games, and yet none of the other games companies are up-ing the price, even the ones who are smaller than Activision.

Basically this is just Activision wanting more money, or at least, originally it was.

Oh, and I can understand Collectors and Special editions being priced higher... but... still.

Same here. A few hours ago, I had to buy my Diablo 2 ON A DISK. IN A LITTLE PLASTIC BOX. It's sad that Blizzard hasn't yet managed to place it's games on the Steam catalogue.

Also, £70 for a video game? That's more than an NES game back in the mid-80's! It's definitely an outrage, despite the clarity of their motives.
