wait what the dick
Every digital distribution platform is owned by a game developer except for D2D.
Yeah, Valve sure is exploiting the new guys to the industry by letting games that would never be popular and sold actually get popular and sold![]()
this guy is a moron
This was such a pointless interview.
Ah I was gonna post that! Yes he is a fucktard.
Did Pitchford got high off LSD or something? Usually, he is sane.
What you guys fail to realize is that he's speaking from the standpoint of ANY business owner. All businesses in the game industry view every other company as a threat and have some "problem" with how they conduct business, especially as they are all competitors.
Which is why he makes the distinction between how he personally feels as a person, and how he feels as a business owner in direct competition with another company.
Understand any better?
He's also claiming that Valve is exploiting the usefulness of Steam and any company that puts their games on there.
He has a point, Steam is ripping off indie developers. Just look at poor garry and how valve is taking %50 of his money....
Without Steam, would there even be a Garry's Mod retail? Also something to consider.
Well no, and I'm guessing this is why Garry just said fuck it and took half.
and how valve owns all the models in the game.
If he said the same thing about EA's imaginary digital distribution server you guys wouldn't wait a second to agree with him.
they already have multiple game of the year awards, awards in general, and a few best sellers. They don't care if you made a better game. They just want to team up to better launch your product while taking in a slice of pie themselves, but surprisingly (and not just a fat gabe joke) they are not fat and greedy and only take a small slice. They get some extra moolah, the game developers are able to sell their games in a larger market.

Dammit auuuagh
Thing is, Steam's market means you are still going to ship a lot more of your product than if it was anywhere else. You also save money on what traditional publishing would cost (such as physical production, distribution, support methods). I don't know the actual figures but given by the number of games on Steam, 'indie' and big titles, Valve can't be taking too much money from the balance.
I thought Gearbox and Valve were pals.
"MPC: You guys have worked with them a lot!
RP: I know. And I, personally, trust Valve. But I’m just saying, honestly, I think a lot of the industry doesn’t."
They are, but Randy is dumb.![]()
EA Link is obviously owned by EA, Stardock owns Impulse, Valve on Steam, etc (for anyone who doesn't know what I'm referring to.
There are a ton of indie games on steam that wouldn't have a chance in hell with a regular publisher.
I doubt most of you read the article or gave any thought to what he was saying. All he was saying was that from the standpoint from a developer there is a huge conflict with Valve and Valve selling their own games on steam, plus the fact that valve tends to rip off smaller developers since they're pretty much the only choice for companies that want to reach a large enough base. I don't know how much exactly Valve takes from indie developers but considering their power it can't be that great since their only choice is to take what Valve offers them or walk away.
I hear Valve takes in about half.
im pretty sure that was sarcasm considering how much monies he has made...
How are they "exploiting us in a way that's not fair"? Uh, as far as I know, it's just like any other shop, only cutting out a lot of middle men and delivering us great deals a lot faster than other stores do.

I did read it and gave thought to it, but I just don't see it. I think there's the potential for valve to rip people off and become a big business jerk, sure. But valve doesn't seem like the kind of guys to do that.
I'm pretty sure a publisher taking 50% or more from the overall revenue is common.
I think that if Valve had been ripping off the developers who sell their games on Steam, you wouldn't see the unbelievably large list of games. And considering the publisher usually takes a major portion of the profits which is why video game prices are slowly increasing, removing those expensive publishers means that they can sell games cheap, and while the major ones are still around their retail prices if not at least a little cheaper, those major developers are actually gaining a larger profit from going through Steam. I get the feeling something has happened between Valve and Gearbox over Borderlands, and Gearbox is nerd raging on the business level.
I'm pretty sure he was saying that from a viewpoint of a developer, not a consumer.
I agree, I was mostly talking about the people with 'lol Pitchford is dumb' snipes. Randy himself said that he trusts Valve and does business with them etc. What he was doing was pointing out different reasons why, as a developer, steam is a bad thing, and why in his opinion steam won't be the future of digital distribution. I don't agree with him fully but he does bring up some interesting points for discussion.
Though it sounds like he's mostly worried about Valve becoming the next EA, and even if steam was independent from valve it seems like that could happen anyway :/
Steam is like the best distribution method and if a game isn't offered through it I barely consider buying it.
The only thing I hate about Steam is its currency conversion for Europeans, which still hasn't changed after a fucking year.
Interesting discussion.
This sounds like getting ripped off by still paying $50 for GTA4, when you can find it cheaper retail. Taking advantage of lazy people that don't have a way to go up to the store and buy it in a box.
:raise:Randy Pitchford posted:
You guys sure know a lot about business.
If I was garry at the time Valve asked for 50%, I would've asked for 55%, and them 45%. That way it's still alot of money for garry.
Only just a little more.
I didn't know that Valve exploits midgets, bout big guys, well,it's obvious that they dominate there
What the hell do you mean, because I do not understand your broken grammar.
And Randy Pitchford is awesome.
