The film revolves around Luke Murray, a motherless college student and consummate "good guy." He is motivated not by boredom and self-righteous disgust at the people around him, but because his mother was gunned down in a robbery years before.

Ryuk is not a character in the film, although it's made very clear that the use of the Death Note takes a sinister toll on Luke-- and here is my biggest complaint: it also posits that the Death Note itself is responsible for driving Luke's rage. This is the biggest change and the only one I really detest, and it's because it completely changes the nature of the original character of Light Yagami. Light was a bored, super-intelligent young man who felt that the people around him were all morons, like rats next to his godliness. It was this ego that drove him to feel that he could rule the world, and he uses the Death Note in a manner completely differently than anyone else who ever acquired one-- which is a very, very important distinction, I feel.

That said, there is a fair amount of faithfulness in terms of the plot's actual main events, down to some very specific details-- the memory-erasing trick, the bus episode, even the infamous bag-of-chips scene. And of course both Watari and L appear-- but virtually no description of L is given, so it's unclear how similar he will be to his original self. Based on his dialogue it could go either way...

...But the ending is very, very different. Rather than ever getting caught by anyone, Luke gives up the Death Note in order to arrange a final tying up of loose ends to prove his innocence to L and his father, and the plan requires him to not know about the book. He leaves himself a video message showing him how to get the book back-- but having come to his senses without it, he chooses not to pick it back up again.

And he gets back to his regular life.
http://www.animevice.com/news/rumor-...t-leaked/2653/

Using my fantastic skills, I managed to procure the ENTIRE script, which I will now retype the beginning of by hand.

Ahem.

EXT QUEENS NYC
A working class neighborhood in the heart of the Far Rockaway.
Broken down stoops adorn each home while CAR ALARMS and SHOUTING can be heard in the distance as the hard SQUABBLE LOCALS go about their morning routine

Start story

INT BEDROOM, ROW HOUSE

LUKE MURRAY, 21, lies in bed, dead to the world, even as the late morning sun fights its way in. Suddenly his SIDEKICK (Typists Note: LOL PRODUCT PLACEMENT) vibrates to life.

He slowly starts to stir as the sidekick works it's way off the desk and crashes onto the floor...
Alright, let's skip ahead about 30 minutes!

INT LUKE'S ROOM

Luke rights in the DEATH NOTE as...

EXT COURTHOUSE

...REPORTERS pepper Patterson with questions

...etc etc etc
Total major list of changes:
-Broadly follows the plot of the first Death Note live action film except the end is tied up.
-Light Yagami is now Luke Murray.
-No Misa (or any other secondary Kiras).
-No Death Gods.
-No mind games between LUKE and L.
-The Death Note has EVIL JAPANESE POWERS which affects the mind of the user.
-The victims of the Death Note die of a special kind of heart attack that the coroner can recognize as specific only to the Death Note.
-No uses of the phrase "I'LL BE GOD OF THE NEW WORLD" or "JUST AS PLANNED".
-L is not characterized at all.
-Ends because Light gives up.
I would post the entire script so you can see just how shit the actual writing really is, but I'm afraid of legal repercussions.

Seriously, this.

Foreign films are best left alone. None of that English-dubbed bullshit.

If you're going to watch a film that another culture has worked to create, you had better watch it on their terms goddammit

Seriously. What the fuck! I liked the Japanese live action version of Death Note. Why would you use one of the worst actors in a Japanese anime based movie? Its going to be horrible. The anime will always be amazing, but an American live action will be a disaster.

Manga was awesome, Anime had 99.99% of mangas awesomeness (they didn't inclute last few pages of manga in the anime), live action movies was pretty shitty but you could watch it if there where nothing else to see (it didn't follow original plot at all), this piece of crap will suck soooooooo hard, i hope this highschool musical guy will die of swine flu before they finish the film.

I've read like 20 pages of the script and I think there might be some producer meddling involved. It's common that they ruin adaptions with their ignorance. They have pretty much full control of the writers, except they care more about money than the movie they are making.

When i saw Death Note, i was happy. When I saw Zac Effron (or however the fuck its said), my instant reaction was

Also,
-Broadly follows the plot of the first Death Note live action film except the end is tied up.

Just because he plays faggots doesn't make him one. He is a compleatly different person in reality.

For example. Everybody thought I was a chav when they saw me do this piece of drama where I was a chav. They way I stood, walked and even spoke was heavily modified that when people actually see me in person they are a little confused when they see how geeky and well spoken I am.
Behold the power of acting.
Another good example is Johnny Depp is not anything like Jack Sparrow or Willy Wonka. It's called acting. It's not just reading a few lines of dialogue and doing a terrible impression. It needs to be so good you fall for it. And you calling him a faggot means you fell for it. Making him not a faggot.

But this film will still blow

Anyone that has EVER watched the series had better know this will be complete shit. They basically stripped the story of its character, and just left it full of characterless shells. This is worse than Silent Hill (the movie)'s story changes from the father being the main character to the mother. Well, then again, Silent Hill turned out pretty great IMO.

Hope for the best, expect the worst.

I thought there already was a deathnote film anyway.

The ending sounds crap "mastermind crime solver L will tackle this case with the entire detective and FBI backing, oh it appears to have stopped, lets forget about it" compared to the original    Mastermind L gets involved, plays minds games, captures Misa, L dies then N succeeds in getting Lighto but without either N or L directly slipping up

CP doesn't necessarily have to have a victim, it's just that 99.9% of the time it does. The thing with pedos is that they've been demonized to be horrible no matter what, and I don't think that's the case.

I just hate that they basically removed the entire plot. Of course, I'll just have to wait until the movie comes out like everyone else, but from this it does seem like just a poor adaptation with no real understanding of the original series. Sure, a kid finds a notebook that can kill, but other than that there's no real similarities. Like someone else said earlier, it seems like they would've been better off just creating an entirely separate movie.
