Just go to the surf/skate shop, you will get a feeling on which one you want. If you are ordering online, just watch longboard videos until you find a style you like, and what area you live in. (OP here.)

I live in a suburban area, my neighborhood is just one big hill that I think will be awesome to board down.
I think this one seems a good length for me http://www.gravityboard.com/pages/gs...oards/c43.html

Can you explain what difference the wheel and truck size makes?

I'd say look at that video and see how the style is on that board and if that's how you see yourself riding it.

That board looks like a good carving board, you can't really go wrong when choosing a board cause i'm pretty sure you'll like any board you get. The larger the wheel, there is alot more input but cruising will roll longer.

Smaller wheels are always faster in acceleration but lower the top speed the board can go. Make sure you pick good bearings because that is what helps you with continuous rolling and speed.

Better to get something to do outside then be lazy with. I'm pretty sure long boarding can replace Wii Fit. I have a xbox and wii but they just sit on my dresser unless I have friends over. I'm more of a PC gamer or out doing something.

Awesome, I was so happy when I got my board (from the shop), I think it was the best day since getting my license. I drive 25 minutes out to the beach with friends every weekend (Cause I live in Florida, with no elevation really) and we ride down this one hill that takes us to about 30-40MPH. I try to skate around my neighborhood at least 30 minutes a day, to get things off my mind.

I'd suggest the best music to listen to while skating is post-rock. I got into it after watching all the long board videos and post-rock just makes you think about things alot more when riding.

Haha yeah. Wii Fit is a joke. I'm more of a pc gamer myself but lately I've gotten saddened at the fact that my computer can't even run modern games on low.

My friend made a pretty cool one in woodshop and tried to sell me it for 100. I didn't trust it at all thought and didn't like it. Rather would have a official board.

I'll probably just get the Loaded dancer for christmas, I don't really care that it's pretty expensive (especially as I won't be buying it if it's for christmas) and you may call me stupid for buying an expensive board when I'm just starting out, but I think I need a good board, because a shit board is the reason I quit skating before, it was just too awkward when my skateboard could only roll four or five feet from a good push.

Even a cheap board will make you happy, but you are right, a good board will be easier to learn on.

That's more than likely due to one or two things; your fitness, or your bearings. My first longboard cost me 70 dollars, and I learned just fine.

Again, it's not all about the board, it depends a lot on your sense of balance and fitness. And a set of really good bearings can bring a walmart board a long way.

Yeah I plan to improve my balance as much as I fucking possibly can over the next few weeks. Also I still can't fucking decide between something like a Loaded Dervish style board or a Loaded Dancer style board. Will a dancer style board roll well? I know bearings have a lot of influence on this but the board must make some difference, I just don't want to be having to push all the time.

You're really spending all your money on overkill man, no matter what board you're riding you're going to have to push pretty much the same amount unless you're going downhill. The advantage of buying a starter board is that if it turns out you don't like longboarding as much as you thought you would, you didn't waste as much cash. Not to mention you look like less of a tool carrying around a cheap board that you can't ride than carrying around an expensive board you can't ride.

    This^

Plus people that don't longboard don't know the difference between a super cheap one and a super expensive one, so you'll still look like a badass.

I'm pretty sure I read reviews about the dancing board being for lower speeds so you can do tricks like in the video. Sure you'll be able to go down a hill, but it's not really meant for that style.

I have to agree with Ultralast, go with a simple S9, Gravity, Arbor board that has a variety of boards and find one that you like, you can't really go wrong with a long board cause it's still a long board and is meant for long boarding. Sure, I want a expensive 400$ loaded board in the future, but my $150 S9 Gremmie is the perfect size, it's great for hills and looks awesome. I love it to death.

    I'm a beginner.

I live in Fresno so there isn't a lot of hills so it's mostly flatland.

And I've been looking at these two

    http://www.originalskateboards.com/l...n-34-longboard
    http://www.originalskateboards.com/l...d-35-longboard

From what I gather, the more flexible the smoother the ride BUT the harder it is to control.
The stiffer, the less smooth of a ride but more control.

The Terrapin looks like a LOT of fun, and with wide room for my big feet (size 12's and growing).

The Hybrid looks like a lot of fun too, and apparently the way it's shaped smooths out the ride and a large selection of thick wheels attract me, because as I've gathered, the thicker the more ground grab and the longer it can hold speed.

    Will FP help me?

Like I said above to a couple others, you're going overkill with Original Skateboards; but go with the hybrid if you're just starting out, it's more like riding a long shortboard, and the kicktail will give you more room for maneuvering, which, without downhill will come in handy.

Smoothness all has to do with the wheels, the bigger the wheels, the more smooth the ride is. That's what makes a lon gboard different then a skateboard. It's alot smoother riding down the road on a long board while it's bumpy as hell on a skateboard due to wheel size.

The Hybrid looks like a good trick/carve board so I'd obviously wait on getting that one and go with the Terrapin because it's flat and looks very good for cruising. It's your choice though.

It would, you have more of an ability to shift.

Wheel size makes little difference to smoothness, it's more often determined by the durometer of the wheel.
