A number of high-profile musicians -- including members of Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and the Roots -- pressed the government Thursday to name the songs it blasted at the Guantanamo detainee center to coerce or punish prisoners held there, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

The songs were said to be played for hours -- sometimes days, a practice the musicians say amounted to torture, and one the Obama administration says has been discontinued.

In an effort to declassify all records related to what they say was the use of music as torture, several musicians have endorsed a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the National Security Archive, according to the newspaper.

"I think every musician should be involved," singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash, told the Post. "It seems so obvious. Music should never be used as torture."

"The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me," Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, said in a statement, according to the Post. "We need to end torture and close Guantanamo now."

Thomas Blanton, executive director of the National Security Archive, claimed in a press release Thursday that the U.S. government "turned a jukebox into an instrument of torture."

"The musicians and the public have the right to know how an expression of popular culture was transformed into an enhanced interrogation technique," Blanton said.

A White House spokesman reportedly told the newspaper that music is no longer used as a method of torture at the terrorist detention center. President Obama signed executive orders on his second day in office to shut down Guantanamo Bay within a year and to ban harsh interrogation techniques.

I saw some of the musicians on the gitmo list. If they made me listen to Drowning Pool, AC/DC, and Limp Bizkit I'd be making up shit so fast just so they'd stop playing them. :(

If I was a gitmo detainee I would dance 24/7.
Even if my ears were bleeding and I was dying of the discomfort the music was causing.

Just to piss the guards off. :smugspike:

yeah, keeping people locked up without giving them any sort of a trial to even prove that they committed any of the acts that got them locked up is too soft

Locking them up without even proving that they did things wrong isn't enough, we gotta torture them too. And not pussy torture like waterboarding and extreme sleep deprivation, we need bamboo slits under fingernails for these people who were never proven guilty.

    let me put this simply

WE HAVE NOT PROVEN THAT EVERYONE IN THERE IS A TERRORIST

they were never given trials. they were just grabbed by the military and dragged there. Fine, torture the terrorists, go ahead, BUT AT LEAST PROVE THAT THEY ARE TERRORISTS FIRST

and don't derail this with some "lol don't get so angry" comment. I have every right to be angry when potentially innocent people are being locked away in prison without the slightest bit of oversight.

Maybe they're not terrorists. It hasn't been proven, because they haven't been given a trial.

And even if they are terrorists, every last one of them, 100%, they are still human, and their basic rights can't legally be violated. I can't be bothered to look up the UDHR, but I'm sure it's infringing on one or two articles of it.

Pretty sure doesn't cut it. It's quite likely, almost certain even, that there are wrongfully detained 'terrorists' in there. A good way to prove that is with a trial. It's why we have them.
