NOTE: THIS ALSO WORKS FOR THE GERMAN VERSION.
NOTE2: You can only play with people of your region code if you want to play uncensored. If you change your AppID to 510 and you try to play with someone who's AppID is 590, your game will be censored again.
NOTE3: If you're getting the "Could not load library client" error, apply all Steam client and L4D2 Demo updates, load L4D2 Demo through Steam, then apply the AppID changes again and run through the left4dead2.exe again.

Thanks to Grimezy15's suggestions and my testing, we can remove the censor on the Australian version of Left 4 Dead 2's demo. This fix allows you to play Online and in Single Player without risk. That means ABSOLUTELY NO RISK OF GETTING VAC'D.

All you need to do is change TWO text files and you're set. You'll have to launch the game through the left4dead2.exe instead of through Steam. Steam will disconnect you immediately.

First file is found in \Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2 demo


Second file is found in \Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2 demo\left4dead2


That's it! Just run the game through the left4dead2.exe and you'll be able to play with all the gorey goodness the OFLC didn't want you to have.

EDIT: I had to re-upload the images to Cubeupload because of Photobucket's monthly bandwidth limit. Good work spreading the word enough to use 8GB bandwidth in just over a week.

And I dont think Valve will remove this from the final game want to know why? because we had to "Modify" game files in order to get gore, its not illegal to mod, and Valve cannot be held responsible for what the tech-savy online community does. This isnt the vanilla game, its modded so we can have gore. Simple as that.

Why exactly do you have to launch it from the .exe file? If Steam disconnects you, I would suspect that this will probably get you banned.

Not really, this is the same way that people were tricking people into thinking they were playing the L4D2 demo when it first became available for pre-load.

This is switching the game to the non-Australian/German version. The content shipped in the "real" version of the game doesn't have this. Therefore, Valve can't get in trouble for not censoring properly, because the fix doesn't use the Australian/German version.

Valve still might prevent the fix from working, though, if they feel like they need to watch their backs.

Doesn't work for me. It says steam must be running in order to play the game, but it clearly is. I'm starting from 'C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2 demo\left4dead2.exe' and both text files are changed.

I don't think the big game companies will move to 510, honestly. Though it's legal, its still a bit cheeky to the OFLC. Us Aussies will have to make do with small Gaming communities with a bit of cash in hand.

Novangel was completly uncensored, then he got an update, which no one else got.
He stopped installing said update.

No, all versions are 590. The reason 510 works, I assume, is because it's the Steam ID for the L4D Dedicated Server, thus allowing online use, and bypassing a censorship check.

Americans still have a working 590 because they don't need to bypass anything.

This is off the top of my head, but it had something to do with applying violence towards authority figures (Police).

I'm on the uncensored version, but a friend reckons they've gone through and changed our pre-orders... I'm hoping not. I won't be going for a refund but I will be exceptionally pissed off, even more than I am for the game being censored at all (let alone so heavily) in the first place.

As for that update - by the time I noticed, it was too late. I still had gore afterwards, although I don't think the zombies got chainsawed in the intro anymore. Beats me as to what it was.

The ping is usually pretty unplayable anyway.

I get alright pings to West Coast servers, usually in the order of 220-260. Years of playing on US servers have conditioned me to be just as good at that ping (if not better) as I am on Australian servers. East Coast ones are pretty laggy for me, though, and I'd imagine someone in WA would find both unbearable.

The thing I hate about the censored is fading corpses, I mean wtf!

Why? There's nothing the OFLC can do about it, Valve censored it and people modified the game, short of making a completly new instance of the game Valve will have a hard time stopping us.
Your also assuming Valve are against us. There is nothing the OFLC can do to stop us from doing this because Valve did what they asked, they censored the game.

Valve could try and keep us from doing this but they have no obligation to do so.

Exactly it's not illegal... L4D2 isnt banned it was refused classification until the gore was toned down. Censoring was put in effect which then allowed for its classification as MA15+. Unless modifying games in general was illegal we're fine. that would include making mods for games which can't really be justified.

I get the censored intro aswell, but my game is gore filled, I think its the UK intro, or something along those lines in our gifting ways, BTW everyone talking about the OFLC, it's been disbanded for like 2 years, its the australian classification review board now, so yeah crucify them.
