Haven't really mapped in a long time and i just recently formated my harddrive.
I was bored so i thought i would have a go at mapping something and i decided to do something like gm_vehiclestruct or whatever it was called.

I've been going for an hour or so.
Progress:

Sorry for the tiny picture and low quality by the way. I'm on my laptop.
I'm going to do a 3d skybox when it's done and i'll probably end up making it bigger also to fit for a good road and roadbumps and whatnot.

Nice, you should make some form of REALISTIC track for car testing and racing and whatnot. A fenced O circuit would do nicely.

I'm not really sure what you mean by a realistic track for car testing but i suppose you just mean a big road shaped as a circle. Am i right?

Pic works fine for me. I can see it and obviously that other guy could see it aswell. And yeah, I was kind of thinking to have a bunch of test tracks and stuff for different kinds of cars.

Never mind. I found it.


Actually, I just took one from another texture and added to mine. But i really don't see a difference.

Edit:

I fixed the texture a bit. I think it looks quite good.

I think you should add some kind of 'edge' to the track sides, like just a 5 unit high/wide brush on either side.
So it looks a bit like the sides of the track Gunski posted.

Small update. Just added a few lights to the inside of the big garage / hall / whatever.




OH GOD. Just realised that the lights were completely of on the other side.
It's fixed now anyway.

Anyway. About that border thing. I won't do this on the track on the picture because it's going to be to much work. But ill do it on one of the others with that in mind from the beginning.

Garages to build in, maybe some car frames like in Test track, maybe a jump or two, a cliffed road. Stuff like that to make it more interesting.

I think he means like empty brush hulls that you can fit wheels, seats and stuff on.

I'd suggest some kind of rocky hill/mountain that you can drive rock-climbers up.

also, I'd say change the skybox. I know it's just me, but that lighting is too gloomy. Same thing with Snabbans Airfield map, I couldn't keep building on it because of the lightning.

Like the Test Track maps have, there are the basic chassis for the cars, where you can build a body onto, engine, wheels, etc...

Actually, i kind of like the train station lighting but ill experiment a bit with it.

Also, I don't really understand why you would want car-frames put into the map. I mean, What is wrong with using props like everyone else does? I'll consider it.

Slight problem with that, Source only supports half mile cubed. You could probably do some sort of layering, but it would be tough.

I don't know. I probably wont work on it during the weekend. Because. Well i have better things to do.
Maybe on Monday or Tuesday if i finish it up and add some ramps and the other stuff people suggested.

I actually added some sort of beach yesterday evening but i'm going to remove it. Didn't really fit with the team. But ill add water obstacles.

Things like this are perfect. But you need more then that.

I do have no limits..

I am the car testing man. But doing it over props fails. Every conceivable test on terrain needs to be done on mapped surfaces.

Here. Watch the proving grounds part of this top gear. With the High Speed Bowl, cobblestone road, and test curcuit.

I like how the map looks. But I agree with Zeos, it needs to be bigger. And more smooth hills if possible. Thanks.

The hills were better when i first made the map as i had them as 4 power. But when i touched it i crashed, so i had to lower it to 3. But ill see what i can do.

Sorry, Thought it would automerge.

Anyway, Progress. I wont make it larger, But if you've got suggestions on how to fill up the empty space, tell me. Release comming in a few days. It takes 20 min to compile on fullvvis and fastvrad. The banked corners track was a pain in the ass to do, So there won't be more of those. I'm aware of the lighting issues. I'm going to assume that they are caused by vrad on fast, but I'll look into it.

Make the hills go around the corner to fill up the space. Maybe more buildings at the end. (private anti-lag rooms would be great)

I don't get what the point of the water is. Are we going to drive on water (excluding the airboat)?

If you're going to add water just for decoration, I suggest adding some foliage. That would fill up some space and make the map look less empty.
