Dogfight returns! But hopefully a bit more addictive this time.

The overview

I wanted to resurrect dogfight for the masses and this contest seems like a good way of doing it. Modified to fit into fretta's arcade-style system, Arcade Dogfight will be a manic fast paced gamemode where you are rewarded with bonuses for doing well but in the end this gives you much further to fall. A new temporary unlocks system where bonuses are frequent yet temporary will hopefully give the traditional Dogfight that much needed pace boost.

The Concept

> Easier to control physics in third person.
> Arcade style points system, high scores etc.
> Temporary unlocks and bonuses when you are doing well.

The Aim of the Game

Two rockets spawn either end of the map. Red and blue.

After a minute or two a fuel cannister spawns in the middle of the map, before it spawns players battle it out to take control over the center so they can pick it up.

When the fuel can spawns the first person to touch it will capture it. Then you will show up on the enemy teams HUD.

When you have hold of the fuel cannister your teammates will also receive a message to help you out.

The plane will move very slowly and be hard to turn, you pretty much rely on your teammates from then on.

When you get near your rocket it will automatically fuel itself, another fuel can will spawn after another fight for the center.

Powerup Ideas

> Automatic flak cannon. Mounted to your plane shoots enemies behind and around you for a short period of time.

> Heavy Machine Gun, upgrades your standard gun to a fast firing - high damaging rain of fire to obliterate enemy planes ahead.

> Afterburner - Huge speed boosts momentarily handling accuracy greatly improved, turn your plane into a world class fighter jet!

> Homing missile - Destroy your enemies from a first person perspective, guide your missile to an unsuspecting target personally, they wont avoid you this time.

Powerups

Homing missile test:

Early test:
Just a test for my fretta gamemode Dogfight: Arcade Assault. Showing off the mouse control, Default weapon, one of the (hopefully more) aerobatics, and just general controls.

Thanks. I think I am going with the less is more approach on controls this time, why simulate realistic physics badly when you can do simple physics well?

Hey, always a fan of flight games! Just one thing though:
Please tell me you've got mouse control.
I can't play anything if it doesn't have mouse control.

I remember an older version of Dogfight on some server where all the planes were controlled with wasd and all the vets had £999999 and indestructible planes with nuclear bombs and shit. I quit.

Ooh, I recreated dogfight with shuttles before, will it be as easy to control as shuttles?

Try HAWX. It'll turn you around.

Great seeing this gamemode is in the contest, I had great fun with this.

Speaking of HAWX, I think some sort of cinematic flying mode with points for advanced tricks would be neato. In combination with the dogfighting, of course. Otherwise, it wouldn't be chaotic enough

Good luck to you, Conman!

Thats what I was envisioning. Special moves such as barrel rolling quickly and firing at the same time to cause a spiraling rain of fire on your enemies.

Hard coded aerobatics for each plane class is what I am aiming for, its just getting them smooth enough to look cool will be challenging.

Sort of Plane Crazy with extra stuff added? Or will the controls be totally different?

More like dogfight with things rethought. I haven't actually played plane crazy since January sometime so it should be really different and something unique.

Edited:

Can you create your own plane?
Perhaps, I am toying with the idea of creating your own scripted sequences (such as the barrel roll firing) but customisation of planes is not on my top list. I'm not sure there is enough time :(

What if the actual plane is like an entity, which everyone starts off with, and then they get money (from killing) and when you buy upgrades, it just clicks onto the plane itself, like the SBEP stuff?

That onslaught gamemode you did. I made some maps for it. Wouldn't it be cool to have that on fretta? Just a thought.

If you're making custom planes, you should use MW2's perk system as attributes.

OK. Flying could almost said to be finished, its a little buggy at some points but I haven't had too much problems. Mouse control is down, also I have coded in 'quick time' barrel rolls. Tap Q or E for a slow barrel roll. Double tap for a quick one. Lots of fun :)

Hope to get a video up soon. Ironing out the kinks and working on a weapons system.

Just a 30 second clip of me flying on flatgrass.

Should be able to see how easy it is to fly now.

Looks very smooth! Maybe have a "true" crosshair pointing to where you are actually looking, while the gun crosshair faces the front of the plane. So we can see where the plane is wanting to go easier. It could just be a simple small X.

Con! Whats up? Nice job with the game so far. You need an aircraft? I got one that might interest you if the thruster force is set at what it was before the recent updates.

The planes don't work that way. They use lua not thrusters :)

Nice idea. Will whip one up now.

You double/single tap Q to roll quickly or slowly left (respectively) and E for the other way.

I have coded a modular system for the aerobatics though. You should be able to choose which one your plane uses, eg: Loops, Stalls, upside down flying.

With my system I can code what happens when you press Q or E to the plane, what happens to the simulate function and what happens after you have finished the trick (little speed boost mainly).

Wait a second. If you are making this, and its for the fretta contest, dosent that mean that there has to be a download link?

Needs a ModDB page.

Why would he have it up already? He has all month, and there is no point in releasing it yet.

Will there be a plane editor? Perhaps add it in later?

Yes there will be a pane editor where you can adjust each parts colour in a realtime
model preview you cAn also adjust your aerobatic trick and other attributes.

The plane design is pretty much done. I can't spend too much time on them or game play will suffer.

Also I made the planes 1/5th scale now. They used to be 1/2th, I think its 5 square miles of map, at 70Scale MPH

How will you do a first person missile? It was annoying enough in CoD to not be able to defend yourself, but if you're piloting a plane, you might, say, overshoot your destination by 150 miles :O

And this now sounds a lot more like plane crazy.

:O 1/5th scale! I hope there will be some crazy huge maps. Will you be able to hear faint explosions and gun fire in the distance? Even if they aren't from real planes just having an ambiance of dog fights in the distance would be nice.
