For the debatable percentage of people who use a desktop client for email rather than strictly web based (like I), we all have heard of Outlook and it's little brother Live Mail. Well with the Live Wave 4 update some of Outlook 2010's best feats come to Live Mail. One notable feat is 'Conversation View'.

Keep up with Live Wave 4 exclusives at Neowin (as they seem to keep getting them first)

Full Gmail support? Nice, if they do a good job with the rest of it this could tempt me away from Thunderbird.

Edited:

Would also be nice if they finally provide IMAP for Live Mail.

Desktop client e-mail is utter fail, and I wish it would just die.

Outlook Express / Thunderbird are annoying and i always uninstall them after OS installation.

As much as I love the ribbon, using it in Mail? I think it takes out a lot of the lightweight feeling of Wave 3.

No matter how hard I try I cannot get myself to love web-based email

It's too hard for me to setup Outlook and Thunderbird to get my yahoo mail, so i jut go to the webpage. I've always used web-based mail. Since I opened my e-mail account back in 1997. It's still the account I use today.

I've always used Hotmail, ever since I was younger, and I still do (albeit with a live.com.au address now). The only thing is, is that I tried out Windows Live Mail Desktop (the first name) when it was released and haven't looked back for a while now.

It sits comfortably close to Firefox on my taskbar and I never have to reload, wait for all the JavaScript and whatnot to load.

I might consider using a web-based client again because of things like App Tabs, but ehhhhh.

I would like to use a normal email client but I access my emails from too many places to do so without getting duplicates everywhere.

It has its uses. I've got 8 email accounts I have to monitor even if I don't use them regularly (old school accounts, etc) and it's just not practical without a desktop client.

That's because yahoo are morons who won't even give their free users POP3 support. I switched entirely away from yahoo mail because of that.

Believe it or not, there are some people out there with more than 1 email addresses, and it's impracticable to go check out every single one of them one after the other.

I use Windows Live Mail to avoid the mediocre web interface and the ads, Not sure if I would like the ribbon though since it takes a lot of screen space on my netbook.

Thunderbird is too simple and intuitive for me to bother swapping, plus if it isn't broke then don't replace it.

Only if you use POP3. Modern mail providers (and email clients) all support IMAP.

That is one sexy looking mail client. I recommend Thunderbird to most people, but this looks like it might bring some competition to the table.

There's no date on Wave 4 yet but with all the recent leaked screens (Messenger is god awful by the way) I would assume it's near.

I tried using this and it was so nice at first, but then I realized it'll update me on ANY new e-mails, including junk/spam e-mails, so it had to go sadly. Otherwise it's definitely solid and convenient.

How is it as an RSS reader? I never really used RSS until I got my Mac so I'd be curious to try it again in WLM

The only think that keeps me from switching is file transfer speeds are awful on other programs.

Messenger is shit. I have two friends that still cling to that thing so I can't ditch it, but I hate myself every time I log in.

Not really. The point is, when you have two equal products, but one of them is open source, it's nice to encourage the open source solution driven by a community rather than some product with a company known for vendor-lock.

What I meant was the main Messenger client itself

Pidgin looks bland, Trillian is overloaded with heavily saturated gradients and shinyness and uses such graphics way too much, etc

Adium.im

Freakin' awesome.

Edited:

Someone really needs to make a Windows comparative. Pidgin is dull as hell.
