Okay guys, sorry for the bump, but I am posting this from Ubuntu. I am using the Wubi version, to test it out and such. My parents don't really like it so they'll stick to Windows. I, however, really like Ubuntu and am willing to make the switch on my own computer.

Just saying that I will join the ranks for Linux/Ubuntu users and that I am enjoying it.

By the way, my dad thinks that Ubuntu and any free antivirus is a virus just because it's free; I was willing to correct him on that, but he's still 'skimpy' on free stuff. His loss.

Thanks for the info guys, this thread can officially die.

Just keep in mind that Windows Games will ALWAYS run best on Windows. If gaming is what you want, the Linux isn't for you just yet (Although work is being done on a desktop-specific kernel, anyone?)

I know that; the only Windows application I'll be running is Steam, and, as far as I know, it can run fine on Linux but with a bit of a performance decrease.

There are free games for Ubuntu anyways so I'll stick with those, Steam, and the multiple office applications available.

Oh, and I'm trying to find a specific program (Orca); I can find it in the USC but not anywhere else. Help a newbie?

I already have it installed, but is there anyway to run it like a program from the desktop or Applications menu? I don't know if Ubuntu can run executable files or if it has a replacement type.

Orca should be listed somewhere in the Applications menu.

I got it to run via terminal, thanks anyways.

Now that I know how to get Steam working in Ubuntu & am using it currently (and enjoying the hell out of it in the process), I might as well make it my permanent OS on my own computer. It's way less cluttered than Windows, it's a lot faster, and from what I hear, viruses are virtually non-existent (except for about 800 out of the thousands upon thousands Windows has). I like the fact that you can save documents as .doc and continue working on them in Windows. Once I get a laptop for college, it's gonna have Ubuntu on it. :buddy: People who don't know much about computers (my parents, my brother, and a friend of mine) claim that Mac is 1000x better (literally said that); I just facepalmed and explained what Ubuntu & Mac do, respectively. I'd like to share more of these but I'll save that for the 'computer illiterate people' thread.

They should, however, make more games & applications that were intended for Windows available for Linux; I'm pretty sure the process wouldn't be that much of a chore besides changing DirectX to OpenGL and other things.

    Thanks for your help, guys.

Considering such a small percentage of people use Linux on a PC -- and only a small proportion of those will have Linux on a computer capable of running most games or even have any interest in playing them-- it really wouldn't be worth most companies' efforts to port the games across.

Okay guys, real quick. Here's the problem with Steam. The fonts in the store and in any thing relevant to Friends is screwed up. There's no way to describe it with text so a picture will suffice. Guess who I'm talking to? :buddy:

Install Ubuntu as Dual-boot, and you should be able to mount the root.disk file from Wubi in Ubuntu.

Hope you have fun with Ubuntu. I recently have made the transition back as I have given up games to try and put down my addiction.
It feels nice to be back where everything is simple and customisable.
It's nice a few games such as fallout3 and starcraft work with minimal dirty work other than a few installs and setting changes.

My Steam games are screwed up on Ubuntu, I dunno why.

Anyways, I'm getting my computer back tomorrow. My mom said not to put Ubuntu (she kept calling it 'Ukubuntu' or something) on it but I want to use it. Either I can dual boot or do a Virtualbox (as that computer is actually pretty nice in the hardware department); which one? Also, it has (from my memory) 1918Mb of RAM that seems to never change - it's capped there. Can a system with that little RAM run Ubuntu even with a Live CD (as I'm going to make on or attempt to).

    Edited:

My mom probably thinks Ubuntu is a virus; go figure. I don't care; I want to use it.

Try an Xubuntu liveCD, and just store any files you need on the hard drive.

I'll just burn a CD with the Ubuntu Live/Boot files. My parent just doesn't know that Ubuntu > Windows anyday. I can easily fix the thing with team anyhow (post a screen here, of all things).

I told my dad about that; he apparently doesn't want his name plastered everywhere.

I think I saw a 700 minute CD somewhere (700 minutes is enough space for Ubuntu; not sure what the size of the CD is) around here, I'll look again.

No, he's just a bit paranoid of scammers and such, I dunno.

I found a version of 8.10 on Amazon and I think 9.10 as well that has 4 discs; if I get that, is it possible to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.10?

Don't get it off Amazon? Just download it and burn it. Incase you can't burn it, you can request a free CD from the Ubuntu.com site (where you'll find the download as well)

Hey guys, when my computer comes back from repair, I want to install Ubuntu on it. I know that I can do that from a CD/flash drive but I'd like to know how, along with the following questions. Please don't tell me to do a Google search, I want information from people who have used it.

    1. How do I put Ubuntu on a CD so I can install/uninstall it whenever? Please explain the whole install process.
    2. Do I need Linux to run Ubuntu?
    3. Is it possible to run certain programs (such as Steam or Windows games) on Ubuntu?
    4. Is Ubuntu a good replacement for Windows?
    5. Am I able to use ATI/Realtek drivers with Ubuntu? (As my computer came with those in them already.) If not, any free drivers I can download?
    6. Is it possible to use a Linksys wireless USB Internet connection with the Ubuntu?
    7. Do I need a keyboard/mouse for Ubuntu or can I use the Windows keyboard/mouse?
    8. What antivirus software is available for Ubuntu?
    9. Post any other comments/answers if you want.

    Thanks in advance, guys.
    5. ATI and realtek are picky with linux, especailly ati as their drivers are community made and not made by ati, realtek, their hardware is funny sometimes.

I'm stupid. I thought the CDs had to be 700 minutes but it has to be more than 700 megabytes. I need to pay more attention.

I have a shitload of CDs that are 4.7Gb that can easily fit Ubuntu. I'll read the tutorial on the Ubuntu Community Guide and maybe you guys can help me with burning an .iso file.

    Out.

    Yeah.

Anyways, I successfully put Ubuntu on a DVD-R and installed it alongside Windows XP Pro. Windows for gaming, Ubuntu for everything else. That's how I like it.

And no ads by default on Firefox. Can I get a hallelujah?

Okay, I have a serious and extremely urgent problem. After restarting my computer (dualboot), I got this error.

    Code:
    GRUB Loading
    Error: no such disk
    grub rescue>
I Google'd what I should do and results say to boot from the LiveCD; doesn't work. I'm using Karmic Koala so that might be an issue.

Once again, this is a very serious and very urgent issue that I want to fix immediately.

Like I said, DVDs don't work when I attempt to boot from them.

I think I might need some command to access my files but when I do that, GRUB tells me it cannot find the Ubuntu boot files. I most likely just need a new hard drive.

If booting from DVD's doesn't work, you're gonna have to work with the BIOS for a bit.

    So:
Restart PC, at first screen, hammer F8 like crazy, you SHOULD be taken to a blue screen kinda thing with white text all over it.

Navigate to stuff like "Advanced" or "Storage" or "Boot", I can't remember which one, you'll find it.
Check your boot order, if your hard-drive is first, that's not right really, set your disk drive to be first booted. Instructions for that are on that little page thing.

    Restart, insert CD, relax.
