Skream's playing on BBC Radio 1xtra live show right now!
something really interesting that I just noticed thanks to Dubstep, before you come to like a genre, it genuinely does 'all sound the same' to you. Before I liked Dubstep, I honest-to-god couldn't differentiate between one song and another, it was the same with post-hardcore. Now I actually like the genres I have no trouble telling the difference.
It's weird
god damn that is pretty high pitched
and i love it
But there's definitely truth in "it all sounds the same". When a genre's popularity is high you get more people taking common devices of the genre and producing generic and mediocre stuff.
More electro than dubstep, but:
GOD DAMM thats fucking good
Dubstep V2 - HELLO MOM UHHH I'D LIKE TO HEAR A NEW BEAT ON THE REQUEST LINE
Essential tune.
Love this. Makes fun of Skrillex.
This one's better.
Way better.
Edited:
The ending makes him sound like a huge douche though.
Liquid Stranger- Mechanoid Mixdown
1 hour bass-face, I'm exhausted now...
Has h ever been to Belgium? I know a lot of ppl want to book him but hes agent is a dick
you know what that reminds me of
Just saying
The only thing similar is the MacBook.
Have you guys already heard ember waves, or can I post a couple songs by em?
There just both crap... only difference is that south park is funny
Skrillex is good.
you can't say that skrillex if good...
You might think he's good but that doesn't mean that others do.
I don't like skrillex at all it's always the same.
The electro is ok but dubstep is something he doesn't know shit about.
Yeah I know it's subjective. But if you go by what qualities people generally like about music and dubstep, a lot of that is present in his music.
This is too vague. Obviously, if music comes from one person / source it's gonna sound similar, but with variation and evolution between the works (even if the compositions are different genres).
Too vague man.
This whole "older dubstep vs new dubstep" thing, is just like the false "real hip-hop vs commercial hip-hop" dichotomy.
skrillex is to hard for me.
If I have to party on that kind of dubstep for more that 2 hours my ears would be gone.
For me Dubstep is all about the sub and the beat. most filth is kick snare stuff with some rides in it.
I said this before but I also think a deep dubstep artist has more work on a tune than filth artists.
Most of the times they just make a wobble or 3 and just use that.
Deep artist have more empty spaces while producing and they have to think about how filling them to make the tune interesting the whole time. So the production value is higher.
A filth artist just makes something and the listener likes it most of the time all though its totally random sounds put together.
But that's my opinion.
Go to a metal concert man. Tons of distortion (albeit pleasant).
I don't think you could make that generalization. There's lots of styles within filth and "traditional" dubstep. For example in older dubstep you have Skream and Benga. Benga's stuff is full of texture, and there's lots of subtle things going on. But then Skream's stuff is pretty sparse, and focuses on melody more. Then for filth, you have Datsik and Skrillex. Datsik's filth is pretty sparse, not much going on musically, while Skrillex has lots of stuff going on.
Haha no it's not man. I assume you're talking about the glitchiness? It sounds random because it's different samples with different timbres. It still fits in the song musically, which is tedious to arrange / accomplish. I love that technique. That technique was used in IDM/EDM before dubstep got to it.
Datsik is cool he doesn't make filth, to me filth is more high pitched sounds that hurt my ears, Bit crusher stuff.
Datsik is just really hard dubstep which is better than most filth. the sounds that he makes are insane!
mostly talking about his older tunes....
I also like Downlink (played on my event once) he makes really cool stuff because he's original. He makes filth, but really cool filth. He's not walking in line with the other children.
Skrillex used to have some cool sounds in his tunes the one wilt bare noise was really cool.reminded me of a dinosaur and that tune was really cool because it had a high production value.
but now if he works alone he's just not caring how much the snare, kick or sub sucks.
These are very important in dubstep and the one he's always using sounds like the one you get if you start FL studio 10.
I just have to like the production value otherwise it's not good for me...
get it?
(and I don't like metal)
Datsik's basslines have a bit more high frequency content in them, they're not just deep and subby, so I would consider him filth-ish. I've never really listened to Downlink.
What.
I can kinda see what you're saying here. His drums are good, but I think their levels in the mix aren't as prominent as other dubstep songs. They kind of blend more than dominate (his songs tend to be thick with elements as well).
Lol no. Not at all. I know what you're talking about too. The 909 snare (used a lot in house, dubstep, dnb). Interestingly he rarely uses that.
Man, I can't believe you don't like distortion as a musical effect. It's like you're a grandpa. Or no, ancestral, because they use distortion in blues music bro.![]()
No idea about that, I hope to see him in Petrol or Trix in the future, or Dour...
Also Skrillex is good at what he does but his style is so distinct that it's easy to grow tired of it, imho...
And yet again the thread descends into a discussion on how bad Skrillex is.
not saying I don't like distortion. I Don't like the way its used in metal...
And the tune with bare noise sorry for the typo.
But that tune is really cool because it was different...
not the kick snare kick snare thing with some wobbles on it.
2nd drop sucks because its boring
Not really Dubstep, but I don't know where else to post it.
Out of everyone who I've seen say "Skrillex sucks", none of them had a good reason.
That's not really different imo, the song is just a simpler version of his style to make space for the rapping.
there was a song Skrillex did with Foreign beggars which is ironically how I got into dubstep in the first place, because I liked foreign beggars prior
This has happened to me before. Hip-Hop is a gateway genre.
it's like murriwana!
Figure is one of my fav's, got the opportunity to see him live once, it was amazing.
you don't see what i'm trying to say, do you?
This is totally different than a normal dubstep. beat, that's what makes it very interesting.
and the sound are better than his normal tunes, darker. like I said dinosaur style.
That's why I like this tune. his other tunes are all boring kick snare things and high pitched sounds made with bit crusher.
you see?
And it doesn't matter if no body has a good reason why they don't like skrillex.
You like him or you don't. but if you can't say why it's mostly because most of your friends say skrillex sucks...
I think some dubstep is good, but dear god some of it just sounds like random noise. The first time I heard dubstep was some guy micspamming Skrillex in Counter-Strike, and I honestly thought it was something that someone designed for that very purpose.
I get it.
You need better listening.
You don't have to have a reason, but if you make vague statements or generalizations when "critiquing" music (and conform with popular opinion mindlessly); your opinion is shit.
I listen really good and he doesn't have much percussion in his tunes.
To me percussion is really important.
And I just don't like his new tune some older ones like scary monsters are and scatta are ok
but the new ones I'll pass...
