Isn't it about time we make a new thread for cmip now? This one's drying out of content if you ask me...
In a thread like this a new thread won't change much, there aren't enough people who visit the section but don't post.

In all honesty, this section doesn't stand much hope of reviving itself with the current level of skill diversity and number of members it has.

We should all pitch (like my pun y/n) in and post on Garry's user wall to ask him to bump MGR to the spotlight for a bit

If anyone ever wants to get into classical / contemporary composition or piano performance I'd be more than willing to offer CC, if that helps the section expand at all.

I don't come in here that often but I can attempt to give feedback on stuff sometimes, I'm not very good at critiquing others' musical work though

    Edited:

trying to do some chill/glitch stuff I guess, haven't really made anything like this before but I really like it
This is pretty cool. If you'd make it a bit slower, and took out the happy lil synth at around 1 minute, and add some documentary samples it could pass of as a Boards of Canada track

    Just finished the new track:
    Feedback would be much appreciated!
Free download on SC as always

This is cool too. I'm really digging those speak'n'spell samples with the wobbles in the second half of the track.

I can hear what you're going for and it could sound quite neat, but the synchronization is off for the party rock bits in particular... I'm having trouble telling if it's because party rock is too fast or simply because the piano (I forget what it's from) could be time-shifted slightly to match up.

The rest seems to work rather well and achieve what you were going for, however.

If anyone ever wants to get into classical / contemporary composition or piano performance I'd be more than willing to offer CC, if that helps the section expand at all.
Oh sheesh, I was going to wait a bit to post this but since you mentioned that and it is exactly what I need, cool. It's only 42 seconds because I just reached a point where I was out of ideas, but I'm interested in expanding it in the future until it's a decent length.

I wish I could post my band's stuff with Soundcloud links, but our record people won't let us make one for some reason. We have to promote it through Bandcamp and physical copies which is shit because I reckon only 50% of people will click a Soundcloud link and then maybe 10% of that will click an actual offsite link.

The pentatonic scale gives an almost floating feeling, but it's hard to achieve movement with it. Maybe change up the scales you're using at different point. Debussy moves from the pentatonic scale, to a scalar mode, to the wholetone scale, and everything in between. It still gives that relaxed, floating feeling, but it has a bit more purpose. Along with that, try to take parts of your material and reuse them in different ways. As an example, perhaps you could take the single descending note in the beginning, and have that in octaves over the faster moving section later on.

I know that you're using a lot of the high register to contribute to the relaxed feeling, but try and use different parts of the piano. One way to help with this, as well as increase the length, is to plan out the composition to an extent. That doesn't mean plotting the form in a 'A' 'B' 'A' manner (though you can if you want), but more along the lines of, "I want a calm opening, with a small moment at 1:00 followed by acceleration up to the high point at 2:00. Afterwards, the music dies down till the end at 3:00." I don't do this with words, but with lines - literally. Take a sheet of paper and a pencil and draw out the course of the music in a more abstract way. Different things work for different people, so play around with it till you get something that works for you.

Also, remember, you don't have to always have chordal accompaniment in the left hand. The lower registers are great for carrying a melody, or adding accompaniment in different ways. You can become contrapuntal and harmonic at the same time. Pretty much whatever you write can be played if the performer is skilled enough. Just make sure that the span of the notes in one hand at any one time is no larger than a tenth. You can do twelfths and the like, but most people will have to roll them to get all the notes in the chord, so just make sure they're not fast.

Lastly, I'd encourage you to listen to some piano works by Debussy and Ravel. Here are a few:

All of the Debussy Preludes are great pieces. Ondine is verging on atonality at some points, but it's still very beautiful and relaxing. Don't be afraid of atonality and dissonance, it can sound amazing in a piece like yours.

I almost forgot: You can change the tempo slightly, slowing it down gradually at some points and speeding it up at others. It can make it a bit more free.

Yeah the thread title is meant to be a joke, I don't think anyone has actually posted country music in here before

I like the song, I'm not a huge fan of the intro but I like when it kicks in! I'm going to start my attempt at making Hip-hop influenced IDM type stuff soon, kind of similar to Nosaj Thing, so hopefully I'll have some stuff to post in here eventually. What DAW are you using?

I really liked this actually. I can't comment on how well you made it your own or anything since I haven't heard the original. The drop at like the 4:35 area was sweet aswell. Nice remix. Clap/Snare is a bit weird, try make it a bit more punchy? That's all I can really say, it's a good remix.

This contest was actually pretty cool, all you had to do was use some samples in your track. I was trying to go for a specific sound for the claps (i think it's called pre-shifted?) but it didn't really come out the way i wanted. But anyway, thanks, I'll remember this on my next track.

Either you were being lazy or you really need to work on your guitar playing - pretty poor intonation and not in time, also that strumming pattern isn't too imaginative either sorry

    Edit:

I recently got a a Bentompi electric organ (cheap as all shit shitty little reed organ that sounds like the middle ground between a harmonica and an accordian) and found out that it was so out of tune I could not use it for standard music so I made some drones with it

Didn't turn out too bad, quite messy in some places but yeah

I used the organ, an old harmonica I found in my drawer (probably got some sort of disease from using it), some cool other noises and some loopin software

Top notch producing mate, I really like this.

If you're going for that Johny Hobo and The Freight Trains sound I suggest you get yourself a taperecorder or make it lo-fi in some other way. As of now there isn't really anything catching me, too clean to get that feeling for me.

Recorded this today. It's pretty bad quality but I like the general idea of it.

Here it's the other way around for me, some cleaner recording could really make this pop. As for the song; it's pretty damn cool.

i used many many different things. alot where recorded samples and put through many different effects to get certain noises. but as far os software i used pro tools, cubase, audacity (for recording) and flstudio because i like the piano roll. it makes it easier to place complex beats like in IDM. for each effect of the kicks i used each kick in a different channel of the mixer in cubase and just got a ton of vst fx, slapped them in there and put them in the right place to make it sound nice.

Has a nice Aphex Twin-vibe to it, I like the drums. I could give some production tips, but I don't really know what you want to do with the track. The production sounds all right to me.

Also here's something I spent a day making, was inspired by the grinding and repetitive house music they play in Berlin

This is amazing man, beautiful melody's. As for production, maybe something like the "DensityMK2" plugin might make the sound a bit bigger and fuller but this is pretty good as it is; doesn't sound unbalanced at all.

I'm liking this, got that really industrial feel to it. The bit at 1:00 makes it come together and keeps it from getting too repetitive.

the synths individually are good, but that intro does not fit the drop whatsoever. in all fairness i prefer the drop to the intro, and i would replace the intro with something a little more synthetic (maybe go for for low-fi synth leads with trancey stabs ala feed me's blood red)
another part of the intro you could improve is that drum roll, i don't know why but i totally hate the building kicks because they just feel like such a cop-out and rarely even fit the track. i would just go with a buildup, to silence, then straight into the drop.

so heres what ive been working on lol
