    This is my first map, so please if you say, "THIS MAP SUCKS ASS", please inlcude why it sucks ass. Note that this is a Work In Progress, some of the materials are temporary.












    This is my hammer edit of my house, I heard it's good for beginners to make a map of their house.
    Note that i've addded some NPCs (not some just laying around) with scripted sequences and triggers. I also included a very sexy shed, and some ceiling turrets that can be toggled on and off.

    Note that some of the walls are breakable and can lead to secrets!

    I really wouldnt take note of 3kilkphillip's tutorials. He has bad habbits that WILL make your map fail in many ways. www.interlopers.net is the way to go!

    The texturing makes absolutely no sense, and I'm pretty sure you're using a desk texture for most of your walls.

    You need to choose textures that are cohesive, both in color theme and in material. For instance a wood floor and a brick wall don't go together, and those don't go together with a marble/stone ceiling.

    Poor textures
    unaligned textures
    full bright
    blocky
    etc

    One thing, NEVER stretch textures. The fit tool can be your worst enemy, but use it correctly, it might just save you.

    Sorry but this is pretty terrible....
    Maybe when you have a lot more time and practice with Hammer first....
    -Excessive use of decals on one wall
    -Excessive use of painting props on one wall
    -Some textures don't suit what it is (Dirty wood inside along side a desk texture (Maybe you were aiming for polished wood?)
    -Windows have no frames
    -And everything everyone else has said.

    Good luck for future maps.

    Anyways, Textures are shit (no offense) and you need to get lighting in there! Full-bright maps suck ass, and as many have said.. you shouldn't release your first map. Look at me, I've been mapping for 2 years and haven't released a thing.

    It's a good start. I suggest you use the texture application tool, some better textures and add a light_environment in the future. It'll make everything look much nicer.

    Well, most people have already pointed the flaws of the map, so no reason to repeat them. But when taking screemshots of your map, don't make so much motionblur/dof. It only makes it annoying to look at.

    Next time, post some pictures in the pimpage thread instead of making thread for it. You will get more replies and help there (probably). Other than that you should never post your first map, they (almost) always look like total shit.

    It's not a good start and a light_environment WON'T magically make a map look better.

    Lighting would help here, sure, but adding a light_env willy-nilly will make no difference.

    The only thing light_environment does is emit light from any face textured with tools/toolsskybox or tools/toolsskybox2d.

    When you've got no sky, it won't help.

    Don't give advice if you don't know, don't give advice if is in session.

    my first map was a small room with a breakable metal table and a shotgun
    it was candlelit too
    eventually i expanded it so that it had a washroom
    then i made a displacement and carved it

    Dude, all you need to do is this:
    -Remove this, or rename it BETA. Honestly this isn't worth garrysmod.org
    -Add a light_environment
    -Add lights
    -Refine your textures! That maze full of the same wall texture was confusing.
    -Re align mis aligned brushes.
    -Add doors, detail.
