Does anyone know of a tutorial, or can tell me how to add a spec map into the alpha channel of a base texture WITHOUT photoshop ? Help greatly appreciated !
you know that you can have the specular map in a separate file right? and call it with $envmapmask in your .vmt

Yeah, but I'm trying to use a bump map and a spec map. http://developer.valvesoftware.com/w...native_methods says that you have to have the spec map in the alpha channel of another texture when your using a bump map aswell, but it dosen't say how to do it.
Only other tutorial I've found uses photoshop.

@Lemmingz95: not at all, you can use both specular and bump/normal maps in 2 different files. so you'll have 3 textures for your material (diffuse, spec and norm)
As of now? That scrolling one can now be classified as a test since Firegod gave me this wonderful VMT - I've sent you a PM of what the texture will do (Mind the horrible wip-ness)
So I was making a bunch of textures today, cropping them, removing all the defects, tiling, ect. I get through a good amount (like 10 or so textures), I haven't saved any of my work yet. I was thinking I probably should do that. I save one image, and go to the next one and the power goes out, and I lost all my progress. Feel like this is the only thread where I can vent my anger... That was bullshit

You know, those textures would look a lot better with the bumpmaps if the diffuse didn't have such high contrast to begin with.

Nah, you can change the strength of the reflection in the vmt.
