I'm sure it's the lyrics. I've seen a lot of rappers where he is, honestly--he's got the mechanical part of it down, he knows how to fit the words to the beat and rhyme shit, and he does it well. But the words themselves don't have any lyrical, poetic quality. Examples:

"she stormed out the room in a pretty upset fashion"
"if we assume it does then how can we have progression"
"the public has perceptions of us, our love's turned to a weapon that just shoots down the negative comments, decisions that they want etc etc" <--this one in particular just reads like a really incoherent run-on sentence that the singer is barely able to put to a beat

They read like a dude's posts on his blog, not like a song. And that can be fine in certain circumstances, but from the beat, subject matter, and the video, it doesn't seem like "causal conversation" is the vibe he's going for. He also uses a lot of really corny cliches:

"anger was burning fervently, in the third degree"
"watching both sides fight like capulets and montagues"

I mean I don't want to rip dude apart cause it's a really personal song, but underneath the flashy video and nice production he's kind of a below-average lyricist.

I think back in the 90s when academic people started paying attention to rap and said stuff like "it makes use of similies, which is a poetic device" a bunch of Conscious Rappers kind of seized on that idea and started cramming as many similies into their lyrics as possible, regardless of context, to the point where just about any similie that isn't a really clever double entendre just sounds silly and played. The Young Money people gave it a little more shelf life by leaving out the "like a" part and turning it into hashtag raps, but that shit's got an even shorter shelf life.

I noticed that the more i got into older rap. It was fun at first but it's almost like MCs are expected to use similes these days. Most of it is just pop culture references or references to older hip-hop for nostalgia's sake

I think synths can be cool if they're done right. Poppy synthlines just end up sounding like club beats. Good for dancing but not really interesting.

Synth elements can't really sound poppy alone, without context. It's really the style of the song that determines that. Some beats with synths:
