The moment many have been waiting for, Warner Bros. has announced who will play the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot. British actor Henry Cavill has been cast to portray Clark Kent/Superman for the Legendary Pictures production.

Cavill was apparently the front runner but a decision hadn't been made up until now. Cavill just finished The Cold Light of Day and will also star in this Fall's Immortals, directed by Tarsem Sing. Cavill also starred in Showtimes The Tudors television series.

For those concerned that a British actor is playing Superman, don't forget that Christian Bale is also British. What might not be well known is according to Deadline, Cavill also auditioned to play the Dark Knight and was also a contender for James Bond (but was said to be too young at the time).

Cavill will now have to practice wearing the familiar red and blue tights with the movie being targeted for a December 2012 release.

Ladies and gentlemen, your new Superman is Henry Cavill. I am personally not very familiar with his work, although the British actor has been in such items as Stardust and The Tudors, but Deadline says that he was in the running not only for the role of Batman in the reboot of that franchise, but also for Daniel Craig's Bond role in those films, and also the role of Superman back when McG was going to direct Superman Returns. So, clearly, someone wants to make this guy a star.

Judging by the kinds of websites I was finding while doing a little Google Image Search on the fellow, he already has most of female Christendom in his back pocket, so regardless of his talent, this might be a wise little ploy on the part of Warner Bros. to get the teen ladies to show up on opening day. I mean, us guys would show up even if they cast Rainn Wilson as Superman, but a little bit of the old beefcake doesn't hurt when you're trying to go four-quadrant. As director Zack Snyder says:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.

Thoughts? He sure looks the part, but again, until I see him on screen it's tough to judge. I'm off to track something down of his, I suppose.

Oh shit, I was waiting to hear some more info about Snyder's reboot.
    Nice choice too.

I'm sure this will be better than the pile of shit that was Superman Returns.

The dude looks like Hugh Grant's cousin or something. This movie better deliver or it's the final nail in Superman's big screen coffin.

I'm glad they got Snyder for the direction. Still I wished that Christopher Nolan had gone for the full directing job and just waited until after he had finished The Dark Knight Rises. At least he's producing it.

If he's involved, it'll turn out way better than if he was not.

I seriously doubt Nolan is going to do very much work on this film from here on out. He's got another movie he's going to be fully involved with for a long while now. this really should be viewed just as a Snyder film. Not a Snyder+Nolan film. Plus I seem to recall a quote from Nolan where he said the film is "in snyder's hands now" or something.

And waiting wasn't an option for this film due to some issue with the rights to superman expiring soon if i recall correctly. They had to push this thing into production now.

Isn't this being written by Nolan's brother?

I really don't know where people got that from because i haven't heard it anywhere official. The fact it says that on IMDB doesn't mean anything, IMDB used to list Chris as a writer on it as well. Jonah's been busy with his new TV show and TDKR anyways, i don't see how he'd have had time to really focus on something as big as Superman.

All I've ever officially heard is this is Goyer's story, and that's what makes the most sense to me.

if i've missed something somewhere though, post the link. I'd like to see it. Hell if i can be bothered to look for anything right now though

The one back in mid 2010 where Nolan talked about how Goyer approached him with the story and had a special on all of Nolan's films? That one never said Jonathon was writing the screenplay for it.

I hope this'll be better than the other new Superman movie. That was awful. Snyder is a pretty good director.

Here's hoping they choose to do a proper film this time, with a different Villain i mean Lex Luthor is great but Superman has a huge plethora of villains to choose from and i'd like to see more from them ( GIVE ME DARKSEID FFS! )

As long as it doesn't have ridiculously drawn out flying scenes like the other one.
