Model the roof.
Model the roof.
'Zoofly' Strobe flashes.
So recently I've taken a big interest in photography and noticed when I came back to max recently, that the V-ray plugin had a lot of complex camera settings, such as f-stop, shutter speed and focal length.
I decided to divert my attention to creating an array of photography equipment, possibly to sell on turbosquid and to use in scenes for added realism (and coolness).

im doing one of these a day to get better. this is day 2
Maya 2012 will have integrated DMM, yay!
Dog-gy* You look like a kid named Tixe, that I used to know in college.
wow he must be a hottie like me!

How 2 camera match..
To this (the floor is a perfect lens reference)
I thought punching in the lens (i guess 18mm) into a vray camera would work but it doesn't.
WTF is going on here? From what I know, the settings are correct..
Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) 1/1 second ===> 1 second
Lens F-Number / F-Stop 45/10 ===> ƒ/4.5
ISO Speed Ratings 400
Original Date/Time 2011:03:02 15:21:21
Shutter Speed Value (APEX) 0/1
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) 1/1 second
Aperture Value (APEX) 433985/100000
Aperture ƒ/4.5
Flash Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length 18/1 mm ===> 18 mm
Image Width 3888 pixels
Image Height 2592 pixels
This is why Vray 2.0 has lens distortion tools.

And your floor is not even.
if the camera you used has a cropped sensor, you need to take that into account when calculating focal length, e.g. a canon 550d has a 1.6x crop factor. that means that at 18mm the actual image would look like one shot with 18*1.6=28.8mm with a full-frame sensor.
I think they're gonna license PhysX too for Maya 2012, seen as they did for Softimage 2011.
They did. It is used for cloth and some other shit. Maya is becoming a great tool for game dev.
I meant APEX, woops. But yeah, APEX destruction stuff would be nice to have easily accessible in Maya.
Why do you need APEX when you got DMM?
Because Apex is more widely used, Dmm isn't compatible with PhysX and tbh PhysX is better.
modeling to roof would rape my polycount

i think he might be talking about for prerendered animations
model every atom on the roof
Atom level point cloud![]()
more texturing progress. now with flat windows

Looks better than the church, but the roof looks kinda blurry
i think it has to do with the angle of the camera to the surface, looks fine top down.
when im done with the diffuse ima throw it into crazybump and get some normals, etc.
Looking good. Any reason you're keeping it low poly?
i'm hoping to eventually end up with a pack of low poly buildings that i can sell, and low poly stuff forces me to flex my texturing muscles.

more or less final-ish
Messing around in FumeFX, may finish&post this animation today.
Whoop, fire-tornado!
Any one know where I can get a texture of some cables. (with gaps inbetween) I dont want to make them
open photoshop
make a texture
You can make a cable texture with 1x20 pixels.
Just wanted some cables to add to this.
Those inset bricks really don't look very good. The whole wall is flat except for them and they're perfectly rectangular.
Also, the textures really need to be aligned to the wall.
Lighting looks very wrong. The alley and the door kinda gives the effect that it's night, but if you look further, you can see it's day.
Also fix these jizz puddles for god's sake.
Also zomg is right, the tiles look retarded right now.
Looks nice for a low poly model. It could use a simple bump map to make the textures pop a little.
that is with a bump map
Definitely needs a stronger bump map on the roof.
Just use a bumpmap instead of just pushing the bricks inn
A friend is struggling using Mental Ray in 3ds max - plenty of light "in the right places" but the renders come out black.
Any tips?
i had the same problem at one point, switched to vray.

Thanks, that's what he's going to do.
police station in progress
I so hate this orange AO-like thing in most renders.
God it looks bad
how can i fix it
