Hakita: We need a prog thread on FP
    Alright let's do this shit.

Progressive Rock? What the shit is that?

Progressive rock is an ambitous sub-genre of rock music originating from Britain that fuses rock music with folk, jazz, classical, and pretty much everything else you can think of. It is famous for having lengthy song structures (up to 77 minutes in one case), concept albums, eloquent lyrics, and huge instrumental jams. It spawned from many musicians feeling the need to burst from the bluesy image that rock had at the time, and fuse it with many other styles, particularly eastern.

Basically, it looks at standard rock, says "bugger that lol" and then fills a song with flute solos.

    Where did it come about?

Britain, mostly. The Beatles are often regarded as the catalyst, mostly due to their efforts with avant garde and eastern music. But the first true progressive rock album was from King Crimson, who somehow managed to write a jazz-metal song in the 60s. It was also fucking amazing:

Another media of which prog spawned from was the psychadelic scene, in fact, the two biggest progressive bands of the 70s, Geneis and Yes, started life out as psychadelic bands, and then there's Pink Floyd, who are, in a word, massive. Literally, one of their albums stuck on the Top 100 charts for about ten years, if I remember correctly.

Alright, so what can I expect from prog rock?

There are a shit ton of sub-genres, seriously [Click me!], but I may aswell try to sort all the main ones.

    Symphonic

Here's the arguably most popular one, Yes, Genesis, Camel, the latter half of Pink Floyd's career and so on. It can be catagorised by lush keyboards, lengthy song structure, and lots of input from classical music.

    That guitar solo!

    Heavy prog

Hard rock with a dash of intelligence and time siggys. Lots of heavy metal artists, such as Iron Maiden, take great inspiration from this sort of music.

    Eclectic prog

Awesome shit, manages to blend and mash together styles flawlessly, a song might start symphonic and downbeat and end as a fast pased jazz fusion jam. Listening to an eclectic band such as King Crimson or Van Der Graaf Generator is unpredictable, you'll never know what to expect.

    http://www.progarchives.com/mp3.asp?id=279

    Psychadelic Rock

:350: Trippy shit. Takes influence from eastern music, avant-garde and such.

    Prog metal

Metal + prog, what's not to get? It also sounds rad as hell, yo.

There's more stuff click this handy banner to go to pretty much the biggest Prog Rock forum out there.

If you like this stuff then go find the post-rock thread wherever it went.

King Crimson fucking rocks. I think their constantly changing line-up actually benifited them, as opposed to ruining quite a few bands.

King Crimson changed all the time
But I do think their definitive moments as a band were the "Larks, Starless Bible in Black, Red" era.

It's up for debate, but that's my personal opinion.

Best thread on FP. Prog Rock is brilliant.

Speaking of which, I'm watching this right now:
    :smug: Good watch.

I've been listening to alot of what people called "New Prog" recently, i.e. Coheed & Cambria, Muse, Mew, etc. What do you guys think of "New Prog"? Most people I've discussed this with either love it or hate it.
If that's the case it should be called Marmite Prog.

The first time I listened to Streams I shat bricks at the growl part. The song was so cheery and then there's the devil himself growling a part. Wonderful part, fucking love it. I'd still prefer them not having these lighthearted parts, I like the dark atmosphere more. I got used to these lighthearted parts though.

Splendid debut album, I have to say.

My short story of how I got into prog:
FP and Shibbey encouraged me to try Pink Floyd.
I liked it and got Dark Side Of The Moon.
Was checking out a few of their songs, saw "The Court Of The Crimson King" in related videos.
    Decided to check it out.
    Eargasm.
Got more Pink Floyd and King Crimson.
Then came Rush, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, etc.

And that is how I got into prog.
This is all thanks to you, Facepunch.
    Especially Akayz and Shibbey.

Fuck yes Prog Rock! Why in the name of satan hasnīt there been a general Prog thread already?

Anyways, Iīve been listening to Yes, Rush, King Crimson, ELP and Pink Floyd and I really should listen to more but it just takes an assload of time for me to familiarise myself with Prog bands and Iīm too lazy. Iīm still open to suggestions. I know there is much more great stuff out there.

Also, I have this great KC live album, USA, and it has really powerfull versions of Larksī Tongues Part II and 21st Century Schizoid man and an amazing version of Exiles

    Check these out:

My start with getting into prog rock was this song.

I heard Pink Floyd's Money prior to this, but it didn't really force me into the world of prog as much as this one track did.

I felt my music listening had been given a big boost at this point.

The more I try to understand what the hell is going on, the more my head starts to hurt. The one guitar is in 3/4 or something and the other guitar is in something else and then the drums and bass have their entirely own stuff going on. And yet, it somehow sounds completely harmonous, I donīt know how they do it.

Oh, and Iīll just leave this here:
