I've been looking into getting a new car for a while and now I can actually get one. I've basically narrowed it down to either a hatchback or a coupe. I've researched and test driven the coupes that I am interested in and if I go that route I know which one I want but I haven't gone as far with the hatchback side so I'm looking for any suggestions or if you actually have the car then your input would be awesome.

I'm looking for a sporty (not an econo box) fun to drive HB. The practicality of HB is one thing that first got me interested. Even though I'm not looking for an econ box gas mileage still plays a part of the deciding factor. I'll be buying a used car but I still want a fairly new ~2010 year for >$20K (the closer to $15k the better). Oh and a manual transmission is a requirement.

    Contenders:
    2009-2010 Mazdaspeed 3
    2010 Mazda 3 2.5 S
    2008+ VW Golf GTI

Right now the one I'm aiming for is the 2010 MS3. I've driven the 2009 MS3 and the 2010 M3 2.5S. The only reason why I have the 2009 and 2010 MS3 up there is because I can't decide between them. I like the styling of the 2009 better than the '10 (that face), but the inside of the 2010 is so much better than the 2009. I have not had a chance to drive the Golf yet.

Other possible HB that I'm looking into:
    Kia Forte Hatchback
    Ford Fiesta Hatchback
    Subaru Impreza

So opinions on the ones I've listed or throw out some that I haven't checked out yet.
    Edited:
    Update (if anyone cares)

Alright so after 2 years worth of car hunting (last 6 months looking for one car in particular) and thanks to someone slamming into the back of my car at 55mph while I was at a stand still I got this beast.

    IMG_5789-2 by Ivegotchicken, on Flickr

This thing is a complete blast to drive. The handling is awesome the power is awesome(even it tries its best to put you in a ditch) and if your mindful you can get good gas mileage (I got 32.4mpg on the highway). I also able to fit my mountain bike in the back!

I've heard that the Fiesta simply has a bit more "oomph" than the Mazda 2. I personally would go for the MS3.

Quite possibly the most over-rated car of all time! You're just paying for the name these days.

Best of the bunch would be a Mazda 3 MPS. Practical, light-ish car with a 2.3 lump under the bonnet pushing aroud 250bhp. Probably one of the best looking too:

I'm going to have to go with everyone else so far and say Mazda 3, although it is a very girly car in my eyes and will forever bu overshadowed byt the fugly-ass nose it has on it. Gotta agree with Sam that the GTI is overrated, and the Ford is nice but I will never recommend a ford to anyone, ever, for as long as I walk this planet.

Even better when the GTI driver is gobsmacked at being overtaken by a girly car

Such a good feeling, I've even considered spraying my car pink just to fuck other drivers off.

I.... actually had that same thought one time.

But then I realised, who would want a Pink CRX? So I sprayed it red since I knew I was going to get rid of it eventually.

Ugly ass, and try ~220 Whp. Also it produces TOO MUCH TORQUE for a FWD car. You can't power out of a turn without fighting the car the whole time. Also it produces too much torque to drive in the snow well. (In the snow when I was driving one in 1st gear if you give it over 1100rpms the wheels spin with winter tires, if you give it less than 1100rpms the engine boggs out on you.)

I would buy a MS3 if it was in good shape and 16k or less.

I do at the moment, but Tuesday it will be gone. I've traded it for my old Civic Hatch and some cash, since the hatch is just a base model and has a y7 swap and the CRX is turbo D15/D16 build with an Si tranny, coilovers and solid mounts I had made just for the car. :3

Then again it MIGHT be gone tomorrow, if the guy gets some cash together. If not, definately not Sunday because he has church and Monday his kid has tee-ball after work so it's Tuesday for sure.

I see, I'm currently looking for an EG hatch or a CRX. My si has some nasty cancer and I rather get a new car and swap motors. Its just hard to find either a clean EG or CRX without any rust.

Ah, yeah. Lots of rust problems there. That's what I like about living in the middle of the US, not a lot of rust, not a lot of price. It's a good mix and no emissions laws or inspection is the only thing that keeps me in this state. :3

But if I were you, I'd get a Mazdaspeed 3.

So that basically narrows it down to the Mazdaspeed 3 or VW GTI. When I test drove a 2009 MS3 I didn't find torque steer to be that bad. It was definitely there but it wasn't as near as bad as a lot of reviews make it out to be and is only there if you are really punching it which I won't be doing on a day to day basis. Also snow isn't a concern, except for this year there is only snow on the ground for 2-4 days total.

I'm definitely leaning towards the Mazda but I will have to try the GTI to compare them both. Like I've mentioned my ONLY gripe about the 2010+ Speed3 is the front grill which isn't a problem in darker colors (black, dark gray).

It helps but not enough, besides OP said snows not a problem, so thats not an issue. Although I still think the OP should get a RWD car, I went with a FWD platform... and its great as a DD but the performance aspect is lost to wheel spin and wheel hop.

The Mazda has a torque limiter and all kinds of stability control. The plus side of having the Mazda is rarity. In the UK golfs are everywhere and they don't stand out from the crowd whereas I've only seen a few mazdas. For that reason alone I'd go for the Mazda.

I own just the standard 2.3 liter 3. Great little car. It's much smaller in person than the photographs make it out to be (but you know that since you've driven one), but it's so spacious on the inside. It's fun to drive (mine only sporting 168hp, so I imagine the 256 in the speed3 is a blast).

My only complaint is that it's a pretty hard ride. Nothing too bad, but on long stretches of highways it gets pretty uncomfortable. Of course that's all thrown out the window when you kick it in some country roads and it hugs the road as if it were glued down.

I'm trading mine up in about 2 years for a Speed3. Can't wait.

op, your obvious choice is to get an '80s ford festiva and then put a 4.8l turbo V8 in and convert it to RWD. best possible choice you can make.
