Dave Grohl seems to have realised the awkward corner he's been backing himself into since 1999, and this is him violently exploding out of it. The best new release I have heard in a very long time, esepcially considering their depreciating track record.

Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things - 2002

I absolutely love this album. But it's one of those albums that I love that comes something like 5th place on a favourites list, so I keep forgetting about it. And then I listen to it again and remember how great it is. While listening to it I even remembered that I forgot that Spectacular Views is definitely one of my favourite songs of all time, but forgot to put it on my list in that other thread.
Also, well done on thinking up an album rating thread that works, AK'z <:

Nucleus - Elastic Rock - 1970

I read that it is "pioneering" in a jazz rock style... I personally think it's jazz fusion through and through. Seems a bit psychedelic in places and less straight forward as compared to most jazz rock albums.
Very interesting album though. It's a thrill, and I definitely will put it on again in the future. Maybe will look for a vinyl version too.

I'm seeing them on Saturday so I thought I'd pick up the album and get to know some of their stuff.
I only knew two songs from it before I started listening but I have a lot more favourites now.
Pros:
Intense feel throughout the whole album (kind of their style)
Some fairly heavy
Some pretty Quiet
Cons:
A lot sounds the same, can't match a song with the name every easily
some songs too slow for me
It was a good buy for $10, proud I did.

Architects - The here and now - 2011

There's some cool songs and I find it really cool DEP's vocalist Greg Puciato guest sang on Year in year out (thought I recognised that voice!). It's a letdown comparing to their older album Hollow Crown (incredibly heavy album, notably my avatar), they've gone softer and it's hard to recognise that it's really them. Nonetheless, it's still pretty good. Liked his screams, hell, voice overall in Hollow Crown better though.

The Reign of Kindo - This Is What Happens - 2010

This band is really fantastic. They mix Jazz with very mellow alternative rock. This album is great. It feels more cohesive and varied than their previous album, "Rhythm Chord and Melody", which ended up sounding a bit the same throughout. The albums are really made by the vocals and piano playing though, it's really fantastic.

John Entwistle - Smash Your Head Against the Wall - 1971

John Entwistle's first (and best) solo album. You know him as the bass player for The Who. It's pretty good. I like the first song, "My Size" in particular. The album rocks hard and has Entwistle's trademark dark humor throughout. Also has a nice cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl", very fitting given the usual style of Entwistle and The Who, in general. Worth listening to if you're a fan of The Who, or like your retro hard rock with an extra scoop of dark sarcasm.

The way this album flows, from Genesis to One Minute to Midnight, is superb.
Their hard, raw style is literally an explosion of difference, what they do to break the mold of electronic house music is, simply, amazing.
I can't get enough of this album, and love it so.

Even though their style has changed to a more symphonic sound in the past few years, it lyrically and structurally makes up for it. The only beef I have with it is that the solo should have lasted longer in track 11

Mogwai - "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will" - 2011

Mogwai really came back with this album; from the open to the close (which includes the 22 minute bonus track, I would say obligatory to the album as well) the ablum feels raw emotions, with the right timing and a very post-rock feeling album, but with a elements of other genres, Mogwai out did themselves; I would rank this higher than Mr. Beast and up at Young Team, because this is an excellent album.

This is easily the most enamoured I've ever been with a black metal album. The atmosphere, flow and instrumentation are all great and even the vocals seem damn nice, and I've bever been a fan of black metal vocals. Only complaints I have is that Dry Body feels like it should have been positioned later in the album, and a couple of the intros felt a little out-of-place.

Not as good as Is This It, but is a lot more like Casablancas' solo stuff, more electronic and less about the distorted vocals and more high pitched riffs. It's basically a mix of all 3 of their albums and Casablancas' solo stuff, except not as consistently good as the first and third album.

yeah it is good, but like i said, it's not as consistently good like the other albums (although i'll admit room on fire was a bit short of the other two)
it's also not as catchy, which is the main reason i like strokes

Roger Waters - Radio K.A.O.S. - 1987

First time hearing this properly today, and I have to say..... this works. More so than the other 80s Pink Floyd stuff anyway.
It is so cleanly 80s that I might as well put it with the "classic 80s albums". I'm not sure I like it as much as the previous album due to that one being a whole lot more pretentious than it (I do like pretentiousness :3:). But this is very enjoyable.
And being that it is a concept album, there are many good ideas implemented within it. I was intrigued all the way through.

Sarcofago - Rotting - 1989

The approach to this album is none other than the bizarre attempt by Sarcofago to be the fastest and most aggressive band in the world. The genre is hard to describe, kind of like a mix of Death metal and Thrash Metal with Black Metal vocals. The overall sinister feel comes complimentary with the production of the album and is a bone chilling effect that I really like. The long songs and short length of the album is also a nice change, with 4 lengthy songs, 1 short song, and a 30 second intro that may turn you away from the album - perhaps it was intentional, or Wagner was just trying to fuck with people. The front cover has been watered down - it is supposedly the Grim Reaper molesting Jesus Christ, however Death's coat was made white, Jesus has no eyes, and he was also supposed to have a wreath. Instead it just looks like a corpse giving some metalhead an orgasm.
This works the same way as Reign in Blood - short length, odd song structures, but most importantly, no boring parts. If it were any longer or shorter, the album would feel a rip off or be ruined by length. And despite it being a good album, I feel it lacks immortality - the album will never be a reputable influential iconic album, but merely a 'good listen'.
That being said, I recommend anyone who doesn't have a hate for the Extreme Metal style definately give this a listen - it's short, there is no loss, and some people can really enjoy it.

Welcome to my DNA - Blackfield [2011]
Fantastic album in most respects, except for maybe "Go to Hell" which was definitely a bit of a miss for me, felt quite cliched. Anyway, Blackfield is a collaborative project between Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen so you know it's going to be at least somewhat passable - and it's excellent. Its based around a lot of simple riffs and strumming patterns but is combined with some pretty melancholic overtones, and obviously some very Eastern influences, with Aviv Geffen being Israeli and everything. It's a hell of a lot more poppy than anything I think I've heard Steve Wilson do before but fuck, its just great.

Relentless, Reckless Forever- Children Of Bodom (2011)

Definitely a good album, better than the last two for sure. It did pass over my head a bit but I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's maybe a little short though (just over half an hour). Alexi's voice isn't top notch, but it hasn't been for years. His voice sounds very strained. He's probably going to ruin it soon honestly. I mean it still sounds decent but it's not as good as it used to be. Going from listening to anything pre- Are You Dead Yet? really shows it's got weaker. I've always liked CoB's emphasis on keyboards, and there's still plenty of that in here. Some great keyboard solos, as well as good guitarwork. Some of the riffs aren't that great, but none are particularly terrible.
I'd recommend it to people into this stuff. I think it's their strongest release in years.

Being produced by Daniel Lanois I was immediately intrigued as to how much more ambient could his production styles get... not only that... but with BRIAN ENO!! God damn... this is Dark Ambient, and in my mind one of the strongest ones of the genre.
If you enjoy Space Rock, this is something to look out for too. As it isn't "psychedelia" mixed with rock, it is more about Drone than anything else. Not something I would listen to over and over again, maybe in a few months I'll pull it out again.

The Hymn of a Broken man by Times of Grace - 2011

As soon as I heard Adam Dutkiewicz and Jesse Leach were gonna do a project I searched them up at youtube and surely enough they had one preview track out at the moment. A couple of weeks later they had another short track preview up and this time it also had Adam Dutkiewicz on vocals instead of just Jesse Leach and I pre-ordered it.
Anyhow now to the reviewing.
You can hear that the music is not made for the public for the men themselves, their emotion is reflected throughout the songs. The instrumentals may not be the strongest and the most technical of them all but they surely fit the songs and set the vibe. The vocals, man the vocals :iia:

The album starts out strong with Strength of Numbers and Fight For Life and somewhere in the middle there is The Forgotten One which is one great acoustic song. In The Forgotten One the guitars and vocals just work so well together to set the vibe that you can just get carried away.
The album also finishes very well.
If you have the deluxe edition like I have you also have the acoustic version of Willing which is just mindblowing.
Overall one of my favourite albums ever along with a couple of other albums and Big Fat Box of Shit by Crotchduster which I am gonna review later today.
