Aiden Baker & Tim Hecker - Fantasma Parastasie
Genre: Ambient/Drone/Noise
Collaboration between a drone musician and an ambient electric musician. I remember going years with hating Sunn O)) and never wanting to explore the Ambient Drone side of music, but this album where I didn't know what to expect captivated me immediately. This is a must listen for any drone fan. Absolutely blazing atmosphere.

Unfortunately I couldn't find their "Skeleton Dance" on youtube, which I find my personal favourite. I heavily recommend you all check this one out, it's awesome :D

Hot Cross- Cryonics (2003)- 9/10
Genre: Post-hardcore, math rock, emo
This album is fantastic! It's the debut of the band, but it's a bit of a "supergroup", formed from members of the emo bands of the 90s which is evident in the music but at the same time it's incredibly different. This album doesn't let up for a second. Every song is fantastic and unique, every riff is so creative and there's so many, the technicality of the guitars, drums etc and their different rhythms sounds like they would be confusing, but not at all. it all works very well together to create fantastic melodies and harmonies.
They're not just some other "progressive" or "experimental" hardcore band, they really are so unique and so so fresh. The production is great as well. Brilliant album.
Definitely recommend it to anyone who's fan of the genres above, and hell anyone who isn't.

Be sure to check into Fantasma Parastasie, you won't regret it one bit. Only flaw with it is it is a bit short.

If you have headphones, listen to Harmony In Ultraviolet. Breathtakingly good. Also his last album, Ravedeath. Creates the atmosphere of an apocalypse.

I've been meaning to listen to Ravedeath, seen it around a lot but have never actually got into it. I'll check into Harmony in Ultraviolet aswell. Thanks for the recommendations man :D

Iron Maiden
Fear of the Dark

This a mixed bag. There's some great stuff here; the title track is my favourite Maiden song and
Be Quick or Be Dead, From Here to Eternity, Childhood's End and Judas Be My Guide are all
great too, but some of the tracks here are pretty weak, especially The Appiration. In all this feels
really disjointed and isn't one of Maiden's stronger albums, but it's worth a listen just for the title track.

I guess Lennie was more of an educator than a full time player so he never became a big name but his influence on jazz has made him pretty cult. anyways this album is pretty uneven, it's the most lo fi I've heard jazz go, and the title track doesn't sound like it's supposed to be on the same album as the rest. but wow that title track... i've never heard playing like that, it's like this swirling chaos of notes, fucking awesome. if the whole thing was like that it would be one of my favourite jazz albums already. unfortunately the rest is... actually still really awesome? just very simple, lefthand plays pretty interesting walking basslines and the right had explores all the melodic possibilities. never goes back into amazing territory but I enjoyed it a lot. furthest thing from a polished jazz album.

Once I heard the live version on Best of the Beast, I could never listen to the Fear of the Dark studio version. But anyways on topic, I agree on the good and bad thing. So many great songs diluted by easily ignorable filler.

Crystal Castles (2008) by Crystal Castles- 10/10, found myself absolutely mesmerized by some of the tracks on here, such as Magic Spells, Vanished, Crimewave, and Knights, while some tracks such as Alice Practice, Xxzxcuzx Me, and Love and Caring pretty much left me pumped. Can't really find any complaints about this album.

The last album that I listened to in whole was Ganglion by Saltillo. Fantastic trip-hop with a ton of world and goa influence. 10/10. Right up there with Mezzanine with the best trip-hop albums.

The Blue Nile - Hats - 1989

Was searching for smooth, "sophisticated" pop albums. Came across this, I had heard the name before and possibly a song but never the album.
The vocals are pretty damn bewildering. Reminiscent of David Sylvian, in fact the vibe of the record is similar to his records.
The difference here is that it's less "art" and more straight forward pop music aimed at the adult contemp generation. Whatever that means.
It's every bit as smooth as Donald Fagen's The Nightfly, but needless to say the lack of jazz on this doesn't hold it back. The drums and synths entwine beautifully on each track, and it just grooves. That's all.
It's a record best listened to in the evening, with no worries.

Rosetta - Wake/Lift - 2007

Got recommended this in the music chat. Only gave it one listen but it's damned good. The overall album is good instrumentally. It drags on a bit at some parts although I'm not a seasoned post-metal/post-rock listener so anyone who listens to post-rock/metal a lot should not have a problem with that. I loved the vocals on this record though.
High points: Red in Tooth and Claw, Wake, Monument
Low point: Tement Nosce

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut

It's more of a Roger Waters album than a Pink Floyd album, so don't expect a typical Floyd album
Pros:
-David Gilmour's guitar work is brilliant as always
-The lyrics are an interesting insight into Roger's head
-Steady instrumentation from Rick Wright, Nick Mason and Roger
-The gospel choir in Not Now John is fucking hilarious
-The Post War Dream and The Gunner's Dream are both great, moving songs
-Roger Waters' Vocals
Cons:

-The title track tries to be sad but just sounds pathetic and neurotic
-When the Tigers Broke Free was a missed opportunity for another military track like Bring the Boys Back Home, which is a great little ditty
-So much bitching about Margret Thatcher (I know that was the concept, but it was still irritating)

I know someone else reviewed it but I give it a 9.9 out of 10
The title track alone I would give a ten, but the following two tracks sounded less crisp which is why I deducted.
I probably rate it as his best work so far - astounding production and so subtle.

The Galilean Satellites is awesome too but if you thought Wake/Lift was a little long then you would probably find that album even harder to get through. A Determinism of Morality does nothing for me though, still might be worth checking out for you since its their shortest by far.

Another gold album from Rhymesayers. Certainly one of my favourite rap/hippity hop albums of all time. Quirky, funny, and serious tossed together into a blender.

Kids and Explosions - Shit Computer (2010)

I have the mumu player to thank for introducing me to this guy, a mashup producer along the lines of Girl Talk, only with a critically different selling point: Instead of simply layering songs in a sort of "party-mashup" a la Girl Talk, Kids and Explosions focuses on stripping the samples to their very core to the point where it becomes irrelevant where the sample was borrowed from. Riffs from songs like Sweet Child o Mine, Is This It and My Iron Lung are shredded and reinvented with a sound that is somehow both glitchy and sublime. The vocal samples are also shredded, often either changing the meaning completely or degrading the lyrics into gibberish vocal sounds (e.g. the Eminem sample in the first track).
I think the most unique thing about Kids and Explosions is how much personality he manages to inject into these tracks even while only using a (compared to Girl Talk) much smaller palette of samples without any pitch-shifting, ranging from hilarity (Swear Words) to genuine emotional affection (Slow Song, There Is A Burning Ball of Fire In Outer Space, The Emotional Millionaire). Often it becomes easy to forget that you are purely listening to samples due to how sheerly inventive it is.
I hold this album with as high a regard as I can because of its true, unrivaled creativity in its use of samples. It's pay-what-you-want with no minimum, too, so I suggest anyone who isn't insulted by samples get this immediately.
