What's the main difference between Illustrator and Flash?
Flash is developed for animation. Illustrator is developed for logo and poster design.

But people like Rusty thinks Flash owns Illustrator. They can both do pretty much the same thing, they just have a different setup.

I can do without animation for now
I'll see if I can get my hands on a legit copy of Illustrator

It also has actionscripting. Which can be used for other things than just game coding and scene changes.

For example there is an illustrator that uses it to make random patterns out of one or several drawings spreading them all out over the canvas in different sizes and angles. Looks pretty nice. I'll look up his name, got him in a magazine.

I normally use photoshop for logos and ads, Quarkxpress for layouts and flash for animation. I rarely use illustrator. Need to fix that.

Kmart, I checked out that website you posted and it's still a bit overwhelming. Where exactly should I start?

I checked out their "guide to starting freelance" http://freelanceswitch.com/start/a-c...elance-career/ and they posted some job boards... the one on their website has a monthly fee, and some of the others I checked out have clients that are asking for tons of experience and/or a degree, neither of which I happen to have. It's either that or they're trying to hire someone on to their team as their own graphic designer... or you have to live in the area... etc. Nothing else in the guide really applies to me at this point... since I don't have a job.

Tried Craigslist as well and I have NO idea what to look for, I saw plenty of people advertising their services but I couldn't find anyone asking for anything

    aaaaaaaaaarghhh :C

Just a bunch of logos I did for a Graphic Design class. They are not that great, and mostly terrible compared to the ones in this thread, but I put some effort into them. In fact I was one of the only people in the class that actually had some artistic experience ahead of time, besides the instructor who was a Graphic Designer himself until he decided to teach.

A fake poster for that exact same class.

And, something I whipped up in a few minuets.

The final project, a magazine article for Latin Jazz. Feel free to tell me what I did wrong/right with some of these, because I am trying to get better at this and I need someone with an honest opinion to judge my work. I will probably post more later

That was most of the highlights of my class, even though I did skip a lot. Next year I am going into a school program called Pathways where you can focus on anything you like, and do projects that incorporate the High School curricular into it. Basically you can make your own schedule, and do whatever you want to as long as one of the instructors knows where you are. Than you get assigned a person who is considered knowledgeable enough in that field of study to be able to instruct you on how to be better at what you are doing.

This is basically a win-win situation for me, sense I don't have to go through another year of High School yet I am still getting the credits I need to graduate . What is your input on this?

Looking back at it, the glow and shadows are a bit excessive. As I said before I still do not know that much when it comes to creating good graphic designs.

what uni do you go to?
the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). it's a big modern university that used to be a polytechnic, so it offers a lot of more... practical courses. however, my particular course (Graphic Design) has fantastic routes from back when it was a poly, and because of this it still has great links to industrial placements and a very good history of graduate employment.

something about the way they 'teach' us to always try and think of the idea behind a design, not just something that looks nice. which, when we look at work from other unis in the area it becomes clear that generally the work is of a higher standard. we also cover a lot of disciplines, things like editorial, packaging, branding/identity, illustration (not to the same extent an illustration course would, but they try and encourage us to improve and use our drawing skills at least), typography etc. so that we can improve our design skills in a lot of different areas, meaning a more rounded, quality design as a final product/piece.

I made this quite a while ago, not sure if this stuff qualifies into graphic design. This first one was a commission - he gave very specific details of what he wanted, leaving only the execution to me.

This one is the cover art for my group's album:

This is a quick wallpaper I made. It's the logo / photo from show of Justice. Wanted to try remaking the cross on photoshop. A quite poor piece.

And this is my current project. I'm having a lot of trouble with it. How to make the blood splatters look good, how to make the sword stand out, how to get blood on the sword... it's a real pain. It's my first attempt at something truly artistically respectable for myself, and it's been frustrating. I really need help with it.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33893957/Fac...ll/preview.jpg

I had to learn all the few things I know by myself. If you guys have any advice on stuff I should try, it'd be really great. And specially on the poster - I really need some useful suggestions with it :/
How'd you do the pixelation effect on the RawDMG picture? Is there a filter for that in photoshop? I know there's a neat one in After Effects.

My brother recommended the site to me, I had been doing some work for him and he thought I could make some money off of it... like I said before, I really don't know where to start.

I don't like doing these contests either... if I knew a better alternative I wouldn't be using them. As for not calling them clients, what would I call them? Contest holders?

    :c
I'm having a very similar problem - I used fiverr for about 2 weeks and made $120, working at $4 per logo just to get my portfolio built up, but now I can't seem to find anywhere to find proper work...

Most freelance sites are dominated by actual companies who have more than 1 person working for them, and the other sites are contests. I've entered a few, haven't won any, and realised that it's pointless and that it's not worth my time. I found a few sites like www.designcrowd.com that have contests and just regular jobs, but the normal jobs are far and few.
