Hi, I'm VERY new to Airsoft, I just played my first airsoft game a couple days ago and it was AWESOME! Anyways, my friends kept telling me to buy a gun. So while looking at airsoft guns online, I noticed that some guns have higher FPS than others. Is a high FPS better or worse than a lower one? BTW, I'm going to get a spring rifle for now with an electric pistol and mags, plus a vest with pockets to keep my stuff. I'll consider buying an electric rifle later.

Generally, when playing at a sanctioned field, the FPS limits are 350 for a CQB/indoor field and 400 for a field/outdoor venue.

You'll want to save up at least $200 for a gun, battery, charger, and extra magazines. Shitty guns are never worth it.

Here's a fantastic article on ballistics:
    http://redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/ai...il?bulletID=91

Basically, you should trust scientific and community-verified conclusions about airsoft rather than whatever retailers will tell you.

Looks like you've got this backwards. If you ever have to use a sidearm, you might be doing something wrong. Stock AEGs can consistently outperform spring-powered rifles in range, accuracy, and especially rate of fire.

plus a vest with pockets to keep my stuff.
If you're looking for a cheap vest, do not get a crossdraw-style setup and stick to an easily matching & concealable color such as OD green or, based on your environment, tan, brown, or a camouflage pattern. You can get woodland camouflage jackets & pants for dirt-cheap at surplus stores, thrift stores, or local sellers. Cheap Chinese vests with built-in pouches are totally fine and reliable, although you might consider switching to MOLLE-based gear later.

Don't waste your money on a spring rifle, get any of these.

Just get the G36. It's the same exact thing without looking like a fucking trout mated with a super soaker.

Seriously, guys. XM8's are awesome! Hahaha, they're my favorite gun, but to bad they're discontinued. It was going to be the primary assault rifle for the Army, but for reasons unknown, it was declined.

You have two options; either buying a TM (or clone) G36 and purchasing the GWS XM8 body kit, or buying one of the XM8 replicas made by SRC in China. Neither of the options is a very good idea. The SRC XM8 has always had mediocre build quality and mediocre-quality internal parts. Supposedly the newer-generation models are vastly improved compared to the older ones, but I can't verify this. Buy at your own risk, you may regret it later.

The sights wouldn't keep their zeros after being fired and the hand guards melted. Since it's basically a clone of the G36 in a different shell, there's also the trunnion problem where the plastic around it would melt and it would shift.

Not to mention it had a unit cost of 5 quadrillion dollars, and has proprietary rails.

Everything HK does has proprietary rails. Thats how you stay in business when you sell a police department a $1500+ submachine gun.

Look, you can't get a good airsoft XM8, so just drop that idea all together. If you tell us what guns you like other than the XM8 we can direct you to a good gun that you would want.

Would a shotgun be good as a secondary weapon?

For a rifle maybe something in the AK class.

A good secondary would be a second aeg. They like to break when it's least convenient and Its nice to be able to run back to the car, grab your second aeg, and get back in the game.

FPS does not really mean a lot. The bbs will get to the target faster but other than that FPS is not really good for anything but knowing how much you wil make people bleed.
