    I haven't seen a debate about trans-humanism, so I made one.
What are your thoughts about trans-humanism?
Personally I think that it is a utopian situation, it makes us limitless. If we wanted to travel to another planet, we could as we would not age and we could just put ourselves in "sleep mode".

Trans-Humanism, being transformed to eliminate aging, and enhance our abilities, and our minds by the use of technology.

Since it's the only hope I have at actually getting any where, I fully support the idea of transhumanism. People should be allowed to choose who they are and not get stuck with what they were born with (which of course they had no choice in having)

Not really sure where I stand on this topic. While I like the idea of transhumanism and believe that humanity as a whole has the right to decide what's natural or what isn't when it comes to human development in science and whatever, I really do think that we have to be careful with this. It's not like inventing the radio or the aeroplane, it's about taking the human body and making it... Well, "better", I guess would be the word. Although I use the word "better" in massive quotation marks, since it's really down to the individual to decide what they think is "better" or "worse" when it comes to this stuff. I dunno...

Unless you live in the middle of a warzone I doubt you're going to need guns inside your arms, besides whatever weaponry they could put in you isn't going to stop someone coming up from behind you and knocking you out or strangling you.

we humans often think we have the right to expand, absorb, convert, or possess anything we need to reach our dreams.

but time and time again, hasn't this led to conflicts with others who essentially believe the same thing?

Yeah but if someone attacks you in the street, it would be useful to have some kind of defence built in.

Uh, we're all humans here on earth, who have we come in conflict with besides wolves trying to eat our asses?

We as a species have the right to expand and etc etc etc, it's only when some idiot tries to expand in the wrong direction when things go wrong.

I have really mixed opinions on trans-humanism. While I like the idea, it seems like it has some major consequences. If we are able to extend the life-span of a human, the first thing I can think of is how the US government is now. We have a bunch of old men in our congress, but eventually they'll all die, and we'll get new people that hopefully have new ideas. But if these people were to live another 100 years by buying new organs and such, we'll be stuck with their ancient ideals for god knows how long.

On the other hand, being able to modify yourself to truly be unique seems pretty rad. It'd be pretty cool if everyone was 100% different. However, there would have to be very strict regulations on what you can and can't do with yourself, and your modifications. I can see terrorism becoming extremely widespread if you can shoot bullets from your fingers.

that's the problem, somebody tries to expand in the wrong direction more often than not

    Other humans.

Transhumanism will essentially divide the species and create human conflict on a level never before seen. I firmly believe that it is capable of, if not the probable reason for, the extinction of our species.

I can't agree with it, but I can't agree with telling people they can't do it either.

First off by that logic, they'll reject these augments.

Second off, you're wishing death on people due to a different opinion...

    That's a horrible counter-argument.

If purists started attacking augmented people, the augmented would probably win single handed
Not saying a war is good, but if one breaks out, it proves we have serious problem with people attacking other people because they have a different opinion, which is rediclous

No, he's stating that it's bad if they get this treatment because they would live longer and potentially doom us with their archaic ideals.

He's saying transhumanism is bad simply because they will have increased lifespans.

I'm with and against this idea.
While, imo, it is a great idea for those who need it, I think this might bring huge problems to our hands. Problems that we might not be able to solve. Don't ask me what problems though. Just saying that it seems alot harder and elaborate then it looks, and I'm not talking about any ethic problems or anything.

For example, this could be amazing for an amputee but if you choose to change "just because" (or for any other number of needs without counting medical problems that would require it for a better lifestyle) it might end up backfiring.

I don't know... It just sounds like one of those things where if you "get too greedy, you end up fucking yourself"
Imagine if people could hack you through your "augs" (for lack of a better term) like that guy hacked his own insulin device wirelessly.

With all I said, I'm not against it, I just think we shouldn't switch everything we have and end up a robot or something if we don't need to.

Increased lifespans aren't exactly a good thing on long term...

That's going to happen regardless of transhumanism. If you're worried about that you should be striving for us to become a spacefaring species.

Well you must understand, if we do head into the situation where we do lack resources we as humans are going to find a way around it.

If for example: oil runs out, clearly it's going to be a race for the new fuel and car to replace it.

A big problem would be viruses. Unless there was no network connection whatsoever, or the person creating the software was a total genius who thought of all the angles, imagine your hand or arm just shutting down, or being remotely controlled.

What is it with this argument? Of course they're not going to be connected to a network even if they were it would be completely isolated.

Unless the idea of browsing the web through your eye is ideal enough to sell that's never going to happen.

It would be a problem, until someone just developed appropriate security. Microsoft wouldn't be able to get away with having shitty security and letting you figure it out, they'd need to have it come with top notch security on purchase.

So it is a problem but it's not a problem, like virus' now.

With that insulin device that was hacked, I have to say though that alot of makers of medical devices seems to fail to understand security
