ATi were a subdivision of AMD, but they scrapped the branding and made all future cards as 'AMD' cards.
Personally, I've never had a single issue with my AMD cards, nor do I know many people that have - but you're definitely right that Nvidia are more supportive of new games at release, whereas AMD catch up a bit after.
You can get a better deal with AMD, but with Nvidia generally carries a lot fewer problems as the drivers are slightly better.
How about I do one with each card and then explain the pros and cons of both builds?
I'd really just prefer to go with Nvidia because I have had problems in the past with unsupported cards and garbage like that and I'd rather pay a bit more to just not deal with that stuff. However, if you want to do a build with each, that'd still be very useful and cool.
