Premise
The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

[*]This is not the first of Peter Jackson's pet projects where he has asked Guillermo del Toro to direct; del Toro was also offered to helm the now troubled Halo movie, but he turned it down to direct his own pet project Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Del Toro did accept the chance to direct this film, but after years stuck in pre-production limbo, he left to pursue other projects.
[*]Daniel Radcliffe, David Tennant, Shia LaBeouf, James McAvoy and Erryn Arkin were all rumored to play Bilbo Baggins before Martin Freeman was cast.
[*]Orlando Bloom expressed his interest in returning to the role of Legolas, even though the character does not appear in the book 'The Hobbit'.
[*]Ron Perlman was up for a role when Guillermo del Toro was the director, but after del Toro left, so did Perlman.
[*]Gollum only appears in one scene in the book. Andy Serkis completed that scene during the first week of production, but stayed on as Second Unit Director.
[*]This movie went through several stages of pre-production hell, the first being Guillermo del Toro stepping down as the Director as a result of MGM freezing the project while it emerged out of bankruptcy, it was almost cast out of New Zealand when several unions and guilds blacklisted the project and shooting was delayed again while Peter Jackson recovered from surgery from a perforated ulcer.
[*]The film will be shot on thirty Red Epic cameras. The Epic is the new model of Red that is expected to have widespread availability around April 2011.

I think I may be looking forward to this film more than any other, I just have a huge soft spot for all things Tolkien.
Jesus, I hope P.J. does The Silmarillion after The Hobbit... though it'd be a considerably larger endeavor than any other project that he's undertaken since it's such a massive book in terms of content.

If you get a chance (by which I mean about 18 hours of free time), you should watch all the "Making Of" footage for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. New Zealand has awe-inspiring geography.

Man, amazing to think that Peter Jackson's Tolkien saga will be 17+ hours when this is all said and done.

What a frigging amazing trailer, can't wait for 2012. The music atmosphere everything was epic and especially the ending with gollum and re-use of forever epic music that is in lotr. So mystical and adventurous. Precioussss

So is Part 1 about the book and Part 2 about connecting The Hobbit and LOTR?
Or Part 1 and Part 2 are book but Part 2 still connects it to LOTR?

Part 1 is the Hobbit, Part 2 is also the Hobbit.
Just the book split in half with some extra stuff added.

Typically, I might've bickered that this was a prequel and that it could possibly suck; but God damn it. This is The Lord of the Rings, with Peter Jackson and co. back in the saddle, this will be as flawless as the other three movies.

I hope the official soundtrack includes the song they sing.
And Howard Shore was the right choice to compose the complete soundtrack. And I hope they extend it, when they bring it on DVD and blu ray.

Trailer made me reminiscent of the trilogy, so I just ordered the Extended Lord of The Rings Blu-Ray edition on Amazon. Which, by the way, is on sale for $50.
Though I feel like a bit of a poser. I never read the books (tried to back in middle school when it was too difficult for me to comprehend), but at the same time, I love reading about the world on forums and Wikipedia.

If you've never seen the extended editions, you're in for a major treat. All three films benefit immensely from the extra scenes.

Me and my friend who hasn't seen the extended editions either are going to have a marathon with another friend who hasn't even seen the theatrical versions when it gets here. It's going to be awesome.

It's ~11 hours of pristine filmmaking. Better stockpile food, drink and jars to piss in if the situation gets dire.
