So, got pissed and punched the door a few times. The problem is, I want my security deposit back when I move in a few weeks. So how do I fix some shallow dents into a wooden bedroom door? The plan was to get wood filler, and a trowel and fill the holes that way. Let it dry and then sand it down, then paint it over.
Bad way to do it? Good?

Though look into getting a new door for the effort going into sanding / repainting you could get a new one especially if its a cheap one.
You could teach yourself a lesson though by going through it the long way and sticking with your original plan.

I just want the quickest way of fixing this. How visible will the wood filler be through paint? I imagine going to Home Depot with a piece of paint that peeled off the door will be enough for them to match the color?

Fill it with the filler, then apply a new coat of paint over the door. Paint it good, so it looks new.

So, do the entire face of the door with the dents? Do I need to sand the whole side, or do a couple coats?

If you just sand the area around the dent it might be noticeable. Would probably be best to sand the whole door down and repaint. Not sure though.

I would sand down the whole face an repaint, if you only paint the sanded parts it will be noticeable, because you cant always get that exact shade again.

The door is flat right? because if it has fake wood printed onto it it may be hard to fill and will look filled. You'll need to paint the whole door weather you sand it or not. The new paint will be much brighter even if its the same color just because there is no wear on it.

It's totally flat, no relief on it at all.

IF the filler is a different color, it will look off even under the paint, but it really depends. if the door is hollow and made of metal, then the fill will not look as right, if it is solid and made of mdf, then it should look fine as youll be able to sand into the material. IF there are filled holes taht are large somewhere in the apartment (I assume its an appartment) point them out. LEave the dents in the door and claim they were there and hope for the best, otherwise just fill it and work it out as best you can. IT should look fine, if they even notice.

Your going to have to give the entire side of the door 2 coats.
Fill the area and allow it to set smooth it out dont go mental though.
Once thats done you can give it one coat of paint ensure the dust is all gone though rub it with a clean cloth or some old t-shirt.
Give it one coat of paint and leave it to dry check it next day or day after and give the affected area another sanding if required I doubt it though. Give door 2nd coating done.
Paint other side if you dont want to make it look obvious but you will have to give it a light sanding to give the paint / varnish a base.

Yeah I honestly don't think they'll notice. If they do, I'll play dumb and point out the other fucked up, half-assed shit in this place.

Oh perfect, as long as something else is messed up that they "fixed" they will just think it was like that. While dishonest, they will be dishonest with the cost of fixing it, especially if its a leasing company and not a private landlord. So leave it and hope for the best, if they blame you, claim you could not fix it anyway as you are not a professional drywall patcher, and could not possibly have the skills necessary to fix it correctly, like the rest of the place.
