How was Gen 3 bad though?
R,S,E helped revolutionize the game series, and FR & LG fixed everything that was bad with the first gen.

but you didn't even try them???
Bad writing?
anyway, I'm thinking of playing Emerald for the first time. Should I?
FR/LG were also terrible rehashes that added nothing new to the series as a whole, nor to the RBY line.
Yes, they weren't considered the best games, but you still can't hate Gen III without some good reason.
I don't like Gen III as a whole. The graphics were terrible, mainly.
Seemed decent compared to other GBA games.
I never really had too many other GBA games. All I really ever get handheld consoles for is Pokémon.![]()
Nah, I got the DS for more than Pokemon.
zelda
Ever play advance wars? Same perspective.
oh my god ;-; I thought I'd lost this Blaziken. ;-; Natural Lvl 100, raised in Sapphire, used it and a Lvl 100 Kyogre to stomp the E4 so many times, especially to raise 'mons for my Pokédex. Ended up getting 202/202 Pokémon seen and caught. Thought I traded it over (I've still got my Kyogre in... SS, I think?), and couldn't find it. Turn on my GBA, check boxes, there it is! ;-;
Sprites haven't looked any better since, and as I've said before, gen4 and gen5 have INFINITY JAGGIES ARGHHHHHHH
I totally feel like playing a wi-fi battle with only 3 Farfetch'd and 3 Butterfree.
Don't knock the quiver dance mang.
man what are you even talking about
they're sprites, of course they're going to be fucking jagged
I find HG & SS to be my favorite so far though. I love its clean look.
I personally think it took FOREVER for constantly moving Pokemon sprites. Ever since I played Crystal and got this cool extended animation of them coming out of the ball(excusing the shitty 2 frame animationss plus an effect like the bouncing sprites from emerald to platinum).
B/W so far has the BEST animations from the Pokemon.
Now if only they can take it a step forward and have them physically move across the screen to land hits. I'm hoping for that(or 3D models) in Grey Version if it ever hits 3DS.
Jagged pixels true, but everything is consistent, outlines are 1 pixel, looks all nice and consistent and pretty.
Sprites scaled, looks ugly, pixels lost, outline of cincinno is missing pixels, tilted animations on sprites creates additional aliasing that shouldn't be there. Scaling up the ducklett sprite looks ugly. Sprites aren't even that much higher res than gen3/4 but just look ugly because they're rendered with stretching and scaling and rotation.
It looks better in motion.
Still too jaggy for my tastes. Now if we could get those 3d models from the Pokedex 3d I'd be a happy camper.
What more do you want from it? It's the first games in the series that have done anything like it, it's not going to be an extremely pretty, polished product. It's great given the limitations of the DS and the fact that this is the first time Game Freak has done it. The only way to make it better it to make full frame-by-frame animations, rather than giving it what essentially equates to keyframed animations.
As well, the back sprites are scaled nicely, and could be a LOT worse. They scale them uniformly and to a nice power so that you don't get a 1*1 pixel becoming a 1*2 or 2*3 pixel.
I'm not sure which algorithm they use, but they probably use nearest neighbor, which is the fastest and cheapest way to scale and rotate, though it does produce the arguably worst results. The only way it'll look better is if they make or implement a different algorithm like RotSprite or something. And even then it won't be perfect.
I think the gen 2 graphics have a nostalgic beauty to them. They're very rich and colourful even if the battle animations aren't that great.
Anyone wanna battle in Black/White? I'm bored and kinda wanna see if I can do any good :P
Gen2 battle animations were awesome. Some are far coole rthan the new ones, in particlular hyper beam and thunderbolt.
I can't find my goddamned Soul Silver game.
Reading all these posts about graphics and jaggies...
The sprites are made that way. It's not some model that can have AA, it's a sprite.
Look at Blazblue. There are smooth effects and such, yet the characters have the "Jaggies"
Because the sprites are made that way.
Ice types aren't the best type defensively, but offensively they are one of the few types that can literally and metaphorically ice any Dragon types that come knocking.
Garchomp can eat his heart out with it's 4x weakness to ice.
Shame, though, that Ice Beam can't be taught to that many Pokemon.
I remember couple of instances where Ice-type Hidden Power, for example, saved my arse.
And that is why I usually have an Ice type in my party. Those damn dragons.
Although it's weird that dragons are weak against themselves. I think ghosts are too.

You can also do this:
>Hydreigon VS Accelgor
>Hydreigon selects Draco Meteor
>Accelgor uses Me First
>Accelgor uses Draco Meteor boosted by 50%
>Hydreigon faints

I have never had any luck with Me first.
shhhh
it won't hurt you anymore...

The aliasing is nowhere near as bad.
