WAKFU IS IN OPEN BETA.
OPEN BETA IS SCHEDULED FOR WIPE DUE TO DUPLICATORS; FULL RELEASE ON FEBURARY 29TH (APPARENTLY).

Backstory
Wakfu is an online tactical role playing game, developed by french-based independent company Ankama games and being hosted by Square Enix for North America, serving as the sequel to their last online RPG, Dofus. Wakfu's story is situated around an ogre named Ogrest, who captured all six Dofus eggs that contain incredible power, for the sake of someone he loves. However, his "love" betrayed him, using the Dofus' for her own personal gain. Ogrest, feeling used, killed the woman and soon after realizing what he had done, climbed to the highest mountaintop and cried for one thousand years, flooding the world gradually. Ultimately, the goal of Wakfu is to kill Ogrest but it is not neccesary. As with most games, a lot of Wakfu's story is told in the game by tablets and much more.
Combat
Like mentioned already, Wakfu is a tactical role playing game. It's similar to games like Fire Emblem or the short-lived Final Fantasy Tactics series along with many, many other games. Turn by turn, you move your character and perform skills based around 4 elements. You can specialize in one of the four: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Elements often give resistance bonuses to that character and much more. The differences between many of the elements depend on your chosen class. For example, an AIR SACRIER is capable of manipulation of the battlefield, switching positions with friends an enemies. But, an AIR CRA has extremely longer range and is capable of pushing enemies to keep distance for his/her long attacks. You can read more about elements and find out different restrictions and play styles for classes... which brings me to my next topic:
Classes
There are a total of 14 playable classes in Wakfu, with only 11 being available currently:
Cra, the archer class of Wakfu.
Eniripsa, the healer/fairy class.
Sadida, the druid-like summoners.
The Xelor's, the disabler and time manipulators.
Sram, the thief class.
Ecaflip, the luck-based gambler class. Money is an Ecaflips pride.
Pandawa, the drunken masters and mistresses.
Sacrier's, the masochistic berserkers.
Osamodas, the beast tamers and summoners.
Enutrof, the adventurers and treasure hunters.
Feca's, scientists with special shielding abilities.
Iop, the fearless warriors.
Professions, Economy and Player Control
Unlike most MMO's, Wakfu's economy and government is PLAYER CONTROLLED. There are NO vendors that you can buy things off of, and everything is hand-made by the players which means they have total control over what is made and what is distributed. There are many professions, such as trappers who harvest and carve animals, fisherman who.. well, fish. Miners who mine for materials and ores to create and mint Kama's (the currency of Wakfu) and Lumberjacks who harvest cuttings from trees, cut them down and create MORE trees. Governments for nations can be run by players who are considered well respected among their nations. Players can vote between candidates as well to ultimately decide who will govern their nation.
Wakfu and Stasis aka ying-yang
Named aptly after the game and era in which it takes place in, Wakfu and Stasis are basically the good and evil of the world. Though they do not work exactly as explained. For every action of Wakfu, there is a stasis as well. The creation of animals is balanced by the killing of them, in order to maintain a proper balance of the world. This is explain in the tutorial of the game in better detail but the basics is that for every action, there is a reaction.
HOW AND WHERE TO PLAY + INFO
You can play Wakfu here: http://www.wakfu.com/na/mmorpg - it is currently in open beta, meaning anyone can play. Wipes are not planned but it may change depending on game breaking bugs and etc. You can run Wakfu on a toaster, so you shouldn't have any problems with it.

I'm having a hard time deciding on my class. All of them seem interesting, but I just don't know which one I want to stick with in the long run. I had a Cra at first, but I didn't know if I wanted to be stuck to backline fighting for my entire existence, and then I tried an Eniripsa, but I don't know how much I will need to solo, and I don't want to wind up in a shitty situation.

I chose a Sacrier because I like berserker type classes, and they look cool. The way I see it, just play with whatever seems cooler to you. As childish as it sounds, often a lot of the better experiences in gaming just come with childish choices. I die a lot with my Fire Sacrier but I'm enjoying him so far. I had an Earth Iop prior but it wasn't all that I imagined.

Ecaflip is my favorite but they removed them to balance them out at the start of the open beta

I remade my Fire Sacrier after I realized that not pumping in HP is a bad idea, ESPECIALLY for that particular character. My spells did enough damage but I died plenty of times because I didn't have a lot of hit points... so I've been pumping into HP every level up along with Angrrr.

Right now it is, but like Dofus, they plan to do a $6 subscription for premium content.

Currently using an Air Sacrier, really a lot of fun moving enemies around, and slamming them up against walls.

just in case anyone cares, a lot of people build 3/2 in wakfu nowadays if they don't go straight hp
meaning 3 points in hp and 2 points in your element (str, cha, int, or whatever the fuck air is)

Good to know. I think I, at least, plan to get my HP up to a certain threshold. I mean right now, my damage is "okay", but I survive long enough in fights.
Also grinding Red Piwi's is hard to find the full set. I'm outside Brakmar HQ because there are groups of Piwi's that would fuck me bad.

Current character.. I found a Red Piwi Ax but it isn't much better than the spells I have. Still cool though, so I'll keep it around with me.

Gonna start off with an Eniripsa, because if I start off with another class and play Eniripsa later, I'll notice how slow it is to fight with them.

I've started playing as that panda thing and after the tutorial, etc. There's nothing to do and nothing telling you what to do.
I'm just at my nation place farming plants and shit.

The quest 'log' is shite too, just gives you a list of achievements.

the game is rather unconventional in that it's more sandbox focused in that you mainly just do whatever you want and don't actually get "quests"
however, this also has the negative side of leaving newer players dazed and confused
i suggest you go to the forums and check guides on whatever nation you joined
they should give you some info on where to find trainers so that you can get started with professions

When you leave Incarnam, you should try grinding with the monsters in the outpost of the respected nation you chose. After that, just dick around and try to get an armor set based around your element. A good one to start with is the Piwi sets. Green Piwi's give Earth, Red give Fire, Blue give Air, etc. From there, you can start trying out your professions or group up with others and grind and do dungeons. The game isn't very clear on what to do because its very sandbox like.

I am having fun with it, but almost finishing a Task but one of them requiring a rare drop is a bitch move on the dev's part.

If it's the one with the Celestial Gobball in Incarnam, you shouldn't bother with that until you are at least level 15. That fucker is tough as nails.

I had to start my character over recently because I messed up distribution in my statistics quiet a bit. Since I am going to be a full HP Fire Sacrier and all, I need to find a speciality or specialities that tie into it.
