thought i should probably start a sketchbook, partly to inspire me to work a bit more consistently. i'll mostly be posting 2D art, digital and graphite, but, as i'm doing game art design at uni, i'll occasionally post design documents and 3D work

You could have made the skull on the album cover a bit less cartoony IMO. The star looks metallic, but the skull doesn't really look bone-y.

creepy as fuck wip texture work



it's for a unity game me and a couple of guys at uni are making in our spare time. the character is plastic (think woody from toy story) and most of the work is done by shaders in-engine, hence the lack of contrast here

Hey Chesty I think your stuff is beautiful and you obviously know how to render.

Have you tried anything looser though? It seems that the majority of your work
seems highly polished and meticulous. I'd love to see you do some faster
gesture drawings in charcoal or something.

yeh i need to get around to doing that kinda thing. i do feel i've been getting better at speed lately though (if you look at the footballer and the half-finished portrait of ian curtis compared to my older work such as the noel gallagher portrait)

i've been doing lots of pose and gesture studies in pencil but i always end up over-detailing them. fountain pen has been a bit of a life-saver for me when it comes to forcing me to work looser

i'll try out charcoal when i get the chance though/money to buy supplies. sadly i'm without camera and scanner though at the moment so i won't be able to show any of that work :(

Cool. The textures on the torso are a wip/placeholder right?

Btw, have you considered painting the textures directly onto the model? I imagine it would streamline the process a lot so you don't have to run back and forth between Photoshop and Max/Maya/whatever.

ZBrush, Mudbox and 3D coats are some of the applications that lets you do so.

yeh the guy doing the modelling knocked those textures up as placeholder. i'm just about to start painting the torso now actually

we have thought about that but the thing is we've got one guy on the team who is great at modelling (especially modelling for practical reasons - he has iphone/android games on the market) and i'm pretty decent at painting/rendering so i'm just gonna stick to what i know and use photoshop. there's a bit of time being wasted because i'm switching between max and cs5 to line things up but i reckon, in the end, that's a lot less time than would be wasted in me trying to learn a whole new program

but thanks for the tip - that's something i'll look into in the future, probably during the summer

Looks good, although square brushes might not be the ideal brush for some textures, like skin or clothings. Think more about brush flow, and colors looks a bit flat, I would love to see some more color variations.

Stance is a little awkward, his torso should be angled oposite way if he should have the leanback stance.

I love your work and I don't think you're lying to yourself.
I bet you can come up with something much better with more sleep, I don't know if the main part is the design or the execution, but in my opinion the design here is pretty bad (sry if that's harsh).

First of all, ergonomics, holding it would be very awkward I guess. If you really want the grip at such an angle, you'd have to arc it the other way and "make it level" with the trigger, like the P90. Might even need a more extreme angle (ref).
I don't know how well this would work with such a heavy rifle (it looks heavy) though, never held one.
Currently you also couldn't reach the firemode-selector-thingy comfortably with your thumb.
Maybe use the F2000 for grip reference.
The stock on the top 2 looks much too long to me, not sure about that though. Also the reddot looks a bit small.

The weirdest thing to me is the bullpup-with-angled-magazine configuration though. When using a bullpup design you want to get a weapon with roughly the same length as a conventional rifle but with a longer barrel (accuracy, muzzle velocity). By giving it that weird angle you remove that advantage and create 2 issues: Ok, 1, the other one can be ignored cause it's internal. But reloading would be a real pain in the ass because you'd have to pull it back and down instead of just down, so you'd have to lift the rifle really high to even get the magazine out (Judging from the position of the barrel it's also a very long magazine).

It doesn't look very modular either, to me it looks firmly bolted together. To be fair though, the F2000 also doesn't look modular but apparently it is.
A longer rail on the bottom and a picture with attached grenade launcher might already do the trick, idk.

Like I said, I don't know what the assignment was but since I can't critique the artistic side, I tried to help a bit like that.

not really, the F2000's barrel is roughly 50mm shorter than an M16's

it's also 30cm shorter overall
so in relation, you get a longer barrel.
Maybe I worded it badly, I meant that if you have 2 weapons with the same overall length and go for bullpup, you prioritize barrel length. If that makes sense
