I don't know who your tutor is, but he sounds kind of fishy. My teacher's an accomplished modeler for games and he taught us to model the hand in a relaxed pose.

Don't start at the fingers. Start with the palm, and extrude the fingers. Make sure the palm has a slope (from the top view) for the thumb.
