It's really a shame. They had a lot of good things going way back with the server manager.
Then they said "Ah, fuck the colors!" and now it looks really boring. They had a really great theme here - simple lines, consistent colors, easy to access settings.

Metro works well for displaying information from an overall/macro perspective (ie: the Home screen on Windows Phone 7, and the start screen in Windows 8), but I honestly don't like the look of that at all. I recognise it's a mockup, but those drop shadows kind of contradict the entire UX behind Metro. Though I can see the logical reason behind the use of drop shadows - to emphasise panels and hierarchy of information - it's still at odds with the whole design philosophy of Metro (no chrome, no drop shadows/gloss etc.).It's really a shame. Therein lies the problem; it's hard to represent micro detail in desktop applications with such a limited design language as Metro. It makes sense for phones - reduce OS chrome, focus on content - but it's going to be hard making Metro work with legacy applications, with much much more content and detail in their interfaces compared to a simplified mobile interface. Sure, when things are completely overhauled (ie: Control Panel in Windows 8), Metro can work, but I don't really think a Metro userstyle would work too well when it comes to bringing forward legacy applications (yes I know there's a Metro Userstyle out right now but it's ugly and proves my point) and that's why I still maintain shoe-horning the interface of a mobile phone onto a desktop operating system is a bit of a mistake .

I think he means get rid of glass for solid colors or metro background colors. Like look at how OSX doesn't use glass for it's windows, it's just grey.

Actually Watercolor/Professional would be a better theme than Aero Lite for Windows 8.

Because if that is true, I want them to offset the clock and the system tray to the right to close off that awkward gap that got left behind.

They removed the image, not the function, which is stupid.
Why don't they just remove the icons from the taskbar too while they're at it, and the system tray ones, and hell while they're at it remove icons from explorer, it's too cluttered.

Seems my windows 8 hates me. Pretty much all apps open store/green screen. It fixes itself if I make a new user, but as soon as I delete my old user, the new one breaks. As long as I avoid that menu, everything works fine...

To be honest I'd prefer if they abandoned the glass that came with aero in favour of a metro theme as well.
it can work pretty good as well, as long as you keep fairly high contrast which won't make your information blend into itself.

I can't wait for this new Beta... My system in Dev Preview is going to utter shit. The biggest things are x.264 encoding apps hang at beginning of the encoding process, doesn't matter which app I try and use. The second thing that's actually system related is when I click the Wi-Fi bars on the taskbar, they do nothing. They used to show other Wireless connections, but NOPE. Not anymore! I have to use my Wireless card's WLAN utility to connect. I've gone through every tutorial on Google on how to fix it, and there's been nothing that works. So I'm just going to have to wait for the Beta to leak early and do a fresh Win 8 install. This wireless shit's really driving me bonkers.

I think the whole "users can find this when they hover in the corner of the screen" concept is incredibly stupid. Users are going to have no ideas that these features exist. It's even worse for those of us who are going to be using a mouse - nobody just randomly shoves their cursor in the corner of the screen.
I don't like what they've been doing recently - they're taking the traditional windows desktop and getting rid of parts they shouldn't. They want users to focus more on the start screen than the traditional desktop. I'm all for change, but this is getting a little ridiculous. They need to leave well enough alone with the desktop side.

DAMN, that is utterly sexy. I would totally be in favor if windows would migrate the standard Windows borders for applications over to that border system, at least! Full-on metro apps seem a little too much, but those edges, those colors, that shadow, so much sexy...

Applications shouldn't even have to be metro themed to fit in with a style like that.
This is pretty close to what they have for Aero Basic right now, actually.

PandaX, is there any news on what Skype may look like for Windows 8 Beta / Release?
All I can even remotely see is the Windows Phone 8 equivelant, which for all intents and purposes, should be the exact same thing just stretched to fit a real monitor rather than a handheld screen.
If you can find any media on Skype for Windows 8 Desktop / Tablet, please let me know, it's killing me. It's also killing me trying to guess whether they will keep both Desktop and Metro variants, which would be nice to have the option to switch between them on the Fly mid-call.

What was the idea behind Aero in the first place? All it does is suck up CPU/GPU cycles, and there's not enough transparent area for it to be useful for anything...
Sure, it's shiny, but is shininess really warranting of an entirely new DWM?

Microsoft's been pretty quiet about Skype actually, no idea. I doubt Skype is going to even have a Metro version for the Beta.
DWM is suspended when nothing's going on so it doesn't waste anything. You can get some tool to monitor DWM's FPS you'll see only when the wallpaper changes, you move a window, anything else related to DWM it's working, otherwise it's not rendering (stays at 0FPS) and CPU is at 0.0%.

Yeah, why isn't your desktop environment only shortcuts, search and nothing else? Much more would be available to you at one time! And no new computer should have any noticable trouble with Aero.

Agreed. Aero is only a problem consuming resources on a single-core PC with onboard graphics. It runs fine with no noticeable performance loss on both of my dual-core machines, one being a laptop with a Pentium Dual-Core, Intel HD3000 chipset, and 3GB RAM. Disabling Aero doesn't magically add FPS to Minecraft, or speed anything up for me.
And contrary to popular belief, I actually think the frosted glass look works quite nice. The minimalist look of Windows 8 is really a turn-off for me.

It doesn't look anything like metro to be honest. I mean it's not ugly or anything it's minimal as well, but it's definitely not metro.

It seems weird that they will force manufacturers to lock the bootloader on ARM-based computers while forcing it to be unlocked on x86. They seem more concerned about malware on ARM than malware on x86
