Complete is like Vanilla 2.0 - there's absolutely no reason why you should play the original vanilla.

Just jokes though... Vanilla is just fine IMO, and if you'll appreciate what mods have to offer if you've played vanilla first.

Call of Pripyat is playable vanilla, but the other 2 I'd recommend at least some bugfixing stuff. I still remember Stalker SoC 1.0 where savegames were messed up, among other things

CoP is very playable vanilla. Wouldn't recommend any mods on the first playthrough.

Speaking of Monolith, I actually managed to save the military guys in the ambush mission to retrieve Item 62. Usually they all get raped by Monolith, but this time I shot the preacher from the yard, took the scope off and charged head-on against the Monolith forces. Only one of the military died.
