And having that sort of emotional connection to a story, whether it be a game or not, is what stories are all about. It's what Mass Effect did amazingly well, it's what drew all of us (most of us) in, and kept us here fighting about an experience we love. Saying 'it's just a game' is a valid point, but it's also something that has affected us in a deeper manner than most people ever will. There is no reason we shouldn't be displeased it the story we've come to love ends in a cheap and awfully written manner, and I just can't believe so many of you are seemingly indifferent to the final story being so 'bad'.
I can understand wanting something to be good, but wanting it to be good so bad that you'll ignore major flaws and disgusting writing just to soften the blow is a wild way of coping. It's amazing to sit here and see people who were talking about story for pages and pages not a few months ago suddenly 'not care' about the story at all today, it's an extreme way of handling this situation. One that I never thought i'd see (I thought i'd see people defending the story, but not 'I don't even give a shit anymore'). I can understand wanting to enjoy the game because you've been waiting for it for so long, but to not criticize Bioware for what they've done to what it a traditionally story heavy experience seems a bit asinine.
I really do hope you enjoy the game for everything that is enjoyable in it, but I sincerely hope you're able to come out and express what you think is wrong with it too.
It's funny because all you do is bitch about people being mean and nasty to Bioware and the people that adamantly defend them.
"I don't like dissenting opinions that threaten my stance on the subject at hand, so we should lock everything down in order to stop me from seeing things I disagree with."
Grow up.
I haven't even been in this thread for about a week
there you go with that cynicism dick again
put that thing away you're scaring the children
~IRONY~
How is the guy cynical? He's just critical about the game.

Stating it's Ironic like a child really proves maturity.
And then facepunch turned into BSN
I'm not sure whether or not that's an improvement.
BSN Members can typically be open-minded and open about opinions and form friendships and niches and groups.
Facepunch can't do that from what I seen.
END OF RHINE
the "but how do you know it will be shit" image that he keeps posting kinda tipped me off
I don't know if you mean image as in vibes or actual image (as I haven't seen one). But whats wrong with it? He's understandably worried or frustrated about the state of Mass-Effect. Nothing wrong with that.
Facepunch is just one big circlejerk
Facepunch either circle jerks about a kid dying in the news or fights eachother over videogames.
Fun fact. EA did not publish Mass Effect for the 360. It was published under a MSGS license.
If you guys didn't put 2+2 together on that one, it's why ME1 didn't hit PS3.
I've only seen a handful of the ME3 spoilers, so I'm still looking forward to it. Who knows, perhaps the execution will make it seem better than just reading it as a text document.
I'm simply happy that, by the looks of things, they seem to be really nailing the idea of an intergalactic war. Most sci-fis pull that off really sloppily and the battles feel really underwhelming, but holy fucking shit, in the ME3 launch trailer there's like a fucking ARMADA of Reapers going up against the rest of the Galaxy's forces - and it looks badass.
Ugh the little kid is such a bullshit plot line. Shepards a soldier so I'm pretty sure he's seen kids die before. And don't even get me started on that god damn nightmare sequence and the Catalyst. Apparently in the original script Shepards nightmare was on the SR1 and see's a dead version of himself that burns away or something similar.
Sometimes, I wish I could erase my memory of all the details about a game so I can play it fresh.
Deus Ex, BioShock, Mass Effect, Half-Life and so on.
wow, this thread has descended into chaos without me bringing up the subject of tanks
lol, wouldn't it be easier for you to just stop reading the thread? as opposed to forcing everyone to stop talking about the game
Edited:
I was about to post almost the exact same thing.
minus the stuff about tanks of course.
Wow, I am not a ME fan, but I've played through both games a couple of times. ME3 really disappoints me so far.
Probably if he was Earth born though you have to remember that this is a war with impossible odds of winning.
Edited:
How can it disappoint you if you haven't even played it yet?
Well, I've read the spoilers and it's enough for me![]()
Lets just say that the reaper mystery goes a bit like this:
Game 1: Super mysterious beings without known motive.
Game 2: Reaper mystery is completely ignored.
Game 3: Their origins are explained, you want to kill yourself for reading it.
Especially for someone like you we use spoiler tag.
I thought most of them were something minor, to spice everything up. Nope, all endings explained.
I'm gonna be sceptical and say that the reason it was good in ME1 was because you didn't know, and when you do know it never lives up to expectations, whatever it is.
So come up with a motive for the Reapers that is acceptable. The one they spewed out is garbage, so what wouldn't be disappointing?
That's a silly assumption.
I haven't read many spoilers, so apart some minor bits being spoiled, and knowing the ending is meant to be terrible I'm still looking forward to the game.
RHINE ENDS HERE
I'm actually trying to avoid spoiling the minor bits.
I've literally got nothing else to look forward too than some of the small fun twists and turns.
On the ending: It obviously isn't someone from the future stating (Possibly Grand Pa Shep) what happened, considering you could pick synergy (unless of course, it doesn't happen if you did pick synergy).
It's impossible to miss minor spoils, like with Prothean (and I think saying that Prothean will be in ME3 for those who bought From Ashes is no longer a spoiler) or EDI having a body , but at least it's possible to miss major spoilers like endings, and thanks goodness for that.
oh goddamnit I accidentally highlighted your entire post, spoiler included
I'd much rather have Reapers that are simply evil. That shitty circular logic they gave them is horribly planned and written and executed. Making the Reapers simply evil, doing evil things, for no reason other than to commit unspeakable acts of evil would have been WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.
I don't think what they did was perfect. But a better plot would be to have the main villain be "simply evil" and completely shallow?
Yes.
Why do we need to know what the Reapers do anyway? Why do we need to attempt to understand them? All organics know is the Reapers want them dead. Why bother understanding what they do, why they do it, or how they do it if it won't matter?
Because simply saying they're evil and making it black and white is kind of against some of Mass-Effect's motifs of morality and its just fucking awful story writing.
Everyone and Everything has motive.
Consider that BioWare tickled you with the motives of the Reapers several times through ME1 and ME2, but never actually explained anything because they either had nothing planned for the motive of the Reapers or they just wanted to give the player and organics the illusion that even if they tried to comprehend they couldn't.
Sovereign always speaks so highly of itself and what it stands for. It always says that it's something that organics cannot understand, which is why even if you ask it doesn't tell you.
All villains have to have a motive otherwise it's just lazy writing.
I'd much rather go through the entire series not knowing why the Reapers reap. They don't need a motive. They're just machines, and machines can be broken.
For all we know the Reapers came up with that great idea to save organics from synthetics by killing organics every 50,000 years from being broken.
The Joker didn't have a motive. He was just batshit insane and everyone praises him for being the ~greatest villain ever~.
