Why are we getting mad over each others drawings again. I don't really understand it.
Why are we getting mad over each others drawings again. I don't really understand it.
cause that's how some people think critique works
I like that Mal
Anyway, here's part 1/15 of a series of drawings I gotta do in the next week. I think I'm in trouble.

I would definitely love to see some more work on this. To me it looks like it's a very basic painting - Not a bad thing, but I'd love to see some more contrast and play on colored lighting, maybe letting the background color bounce a reflection off on the skin? I also think you could make the edge between the background and character much sharper. I assume you're trying to make the background interact with the shape of the antlers, maybe this would be something you could experiment more with? I kinda see potential for a realistic/art deco/surreal sort of background foreground interaction with some more intricate patterning and detailing. I know oils is a bitch to handle, so maybe you should paint the closer details with another medium, like acrylics. I don't have much experience with mixing these but I know it's possible as long as you think about what you're doing.

(that has very little on it)

It's kinda obvious you used the smudge tool a LOT with the shading which is a big big nono
not sure what but the composition is off in some way, it may be the grim in the top left being too far up or something, but everything looks really disconnected and fuzzy
the shading also suggests a super diffused yet compact light source coming from behind the viewer
I would like to say that mako was being too blunt and rude, but what the fuck detlef.
You're sounding like one of the monthly newbies we get that always gets butthurt at critique, you are better than that. No one is giving you shit, your work is NOT VARIED in the subject of anatomy and for you to say "oh the only reason is because it is guys" is bullshit. I could give less of a flying fuck if it has a dick or a vagina, it is about growing as an artist and if you expect to get through art school just painting the same god damn dudes then you are in for a rude awakening.
So to be honest, I have stopped taking shit from you who can be extremely rude in your critique, then you cover your ass whenever someone makes a similar critique towards you, saying they are attacking your work. Start working out of your comfort zone and learn different body types as that is the only way youre going to grow as an artist. For you to simply say "no, you guys are wrong, my art is varied" is the most self righteous and ignorant thing you have ever said in my eyes and it takes away all sympathy you could have gotten from me.
So stop bitching, and use the great potential you have and GROW.

Here is a link with 3 oil tutorials that will help improve your work, you can read them or totally disregard this post, I could give less of a damn now after you pulled that fit.
cool then, because I dont give a shit what you think about me, so I guess we are at eye level.
thanks for the links.
you two sound like those people on da who are "you critisied me omg but im totatlly going to pretend that i dont care!"
Except I care if I get crit and want it? Detlef is throwing a bitch fit right now, and it is because Mako was right to some extent. She needs to grow as an artist and her pride is getting in her way and she is going to be in for some tough shit when goes to an art school.
So whatever Detlef, you're obviously so much better than me and the other artists here that we have no idea what we are talking about! Continue on in your supreme way and we can only hope you post your work here so we can bask in your glory.
wtf chains

I responded to your hostile description of me, I never said I wont work to improve.
It makes sense to me that he would paint that if it was his first time using oils.
It's a good idea to stick to a very comfortable subject when you're using a new medium.
There is no nice way to put what he said, and he has a point.
No, don't wtf me. I tired of you acting this way, and if I have to be a blunt asshole for you to finally get the message, then I will be one. You have great fucking potential but you need to refine it and GROW! You are not going to get anywhere if you do not branch out and currently you are staying at the same quality you were a few months ago. You should want to learn more and explore and hunger for knowledge, not push it away and that is what youre doing.
So cut the shit, and start practicing different body types as they exist and if you want to draw a proper human then you need to learn the varying forms in which it comes in.
I am not rude in my critique

I knew painting that picture was a mistake.
hahahaha
You're serious?
while you have many valid points chains, I don't think I am superior and I don't live off my pride.
A few pages back you gave someone an extremely blunt and vague critique and when they asked you to go into detail you told them to "go figure out themselves". This subject of your rude critique has come up multiple times and yet you still argue that youre not rude? Whatever Detlef, live in whatever delusion you want to, I am done with this argument.
yeah! I remember I used to critique very harshly, but I am very careful now and I can't seem to remember last time I ever were as harsh as people here think I am.
Edited:
jesus christ I think you guys are overreacting
Hey chains, maybe what you're describing is not actually Detlef but just an exaggerated caricature of Detlef.
Hey Detlef, maybe you should recognize that this exaggerated caricature, while not actually you, is at least somewhat representative of you and you have some stuff to work on.
Maybe your overreaction to Mako's post led to this? Ever thought of that?
Last time you critiziced, it was about my work, and you were not helpful not all (you went basically "hurr durr go figure yourself. go back draw anatomy")
It's that "blunt critique" that 1chains1 was talking about
not really
Couldn't go to sleep last night for some reason so I just started drawing random shit at 4am...
And then I become fascinated with my hands i guess

A sketch of an enemy soldier for that platformer game. Thoughts on which style looks nicer? I'm unsure if I want everything in a style consistent with the protagonist, or having her be the only one with the silhouette gimmick.

you should try out different sketching techniques

Keep at it, I see that your lines are nice and long, but you should try and use less of them to get a cleaner result
also, try drawing out a basic structure of the hand before going into details, it will help with the proportions and anatomy
just finished this

right front wheel has the wrong perspective.
I just assumed it was turned.

When shading with hatching it's best to make your lines follow the 'grain' of the form
Best example I could find on short notice
Notice how the lines follow the surface of the building
That's from the Escher stairs piece, isn't it? God he was a bad motherfucker.
it was mainly just for a small avatar but yeah i do know i need to work on my anatomy

thanks for the crits
Seems a lot of chaos is going on around here. Now I'm gonna try not to take any one's sides here, but from what I'm seeing there's a lot of anger building up mostly because Detlef keeps drawing the same looking guy again and again. Well I too feel she should sometimes branch out a bit more. But I will admit it definitely was an okay thing to do, drawing something familiar with an unfamiliar medium such as oil paints, and Mako shouldn't have gotten so aggressive with it.
And come to think of it, Detlef had just done about 3 different comic panels for RA which all featured things she never usually draws.. So I'm not really seeing the problem with her drawing the teen deer guy with oils at least for now. But yeah, Detlef, for your next oil painting, why don't you try something new, give yourself the hardest assignment possible, it'll be a great way of practice.. Try it on a smaller canvas though, as to not waste too much money when experimenting..
As for your critiques, Detlef, they are kind of right on this.. You can get off a bit blunt which isn't really good, but it's not too constructive and can come off as rude, which is why it may seem hypocritical when you get defensive towards blunt repetitive critiques. However, I have noticed you in the way you give them out, like the last one you did with Maya was pretty helpful.
I think all of you need to be a bit more chill with each other. Seeing Mako explode on Detlef like that, its not really hard to see why Detlef got so defensive from the start, and then you came in with even more anger, Chains, you might have had some valid points, but so much anger like that is only going to result in more anger.
Agreed
Everyone should just chillll
We all love each other here in CWTDDAT
What if I did something like this for the bottle?

I browse this thread to look at all the cool stuff everybody makes, but lately there has been more arguing than art.
