When I mean update I don't mean throw away and replace with completely unrelated gameplay.
Well what do you mean then? Graphics would most certainly get updated to begin with, changing the story seems kind of out of the spirit of it, what else can be updated?

Forget the nightvision if you decide to use Fellout (after your vanilla playthrough of course) get one of the flashlight mods, it's more atmospheric that way, oh and you really should get NMC's texture makes everything look better and it won't ruin your vanilla playthrough.
What's the texture pack like? Because my PC can just about run this on all low.

Better looking textures, Fallout 3's vanilla textures are really low res, ugly and muddy, a texture pack for Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) is a must.

I'm looking at the original Black Isle games, why should I get them and whats good about these games? It's only 20$ on steam, how should I play it and what should I expect?

I've always wanted to get into some good older games, and Fallout 3/NV has a special place in the heart for me.

There was a huge mod for NV being made that takes place in New Reno, some screenshots were taken a while back. Is there any news on it?

I was going to say maybe go into real-time combat but I'm not sure. I think the combat in Fallout 1/2 is as good as it will ever be in an isometric game. Doesn't help me much, but I see the value.

If you think you can handle it there's a small version, it still makes everything look better, I tried using the small version and no FPS impact for me so I moved up to the medium version.

Well for one you should get them off gog, them being DRM free and all, and it comes with a downloadable manual, which is a must read not only to figure out the game, but its a fun manual to read in general.

And how you should play it is up to you, you can play them anyway you want, though I wouldn't suggest going rambo in those games. And except a very well written, very well voice acted, dated RPG with some really great art design and atmosphere.

And save a lot, in different slots.

Also try getting New Vegas, some people say they got better FPS with it, I don't know since I never had F3, the only reason I look at F3 mods is to port stuff from cool mods.

Project Nevada I believe I've used, from what I recall it's pretty boss.

I'd suggest as many HD mods as you can that can work together if you want to make things look purdy. After you make things look pretty, get a mod to enhance NPC respawns, respawn loot, and rebalance item weight. It's what I did, it was amazing.

    EDIT:

Got Fallout 1 off GoG, how to put into a window? Also, have windows 7 here, what should I do for running it?

Well as far as I know the only way to run it in windowed mode is a program called D3D Windower, I also suggest you download the High Res Patch and Engine Tweaks.

Flashlight mods crash my game every time. Night vision ones do not.

I still think Morrowind's combat is better then anything Bethesda has put out since, too bad its still not very good.

Also how would you guys updates Fallout 1 and 2's gameplay? while still being faithful to the series.
I would put it on an engine that supports first and third person real-time combat, isn't buggy as fuck, still allows modders to go absolutely bonkers, and lets you experience the beginnings of the franchise from a point of view that's genuinely immersive. I wouldn't change any of the writing or anything like that, and I'd reuse as much voice acting as possible before recording new voices.

But you can't drop them, and having unnecessary items cluttering your inventory is annoying.

    Edited:

I really hope F3 is considered non-canon. I mean, like UFT said: it's a really fun, great game with an amazing setting (apart from the damn metro tunnels, they dragged on for way too long), but it sucks lore-wise.
Oh, and you can find the Wasteland Survival Guide in NV, it's a Survival skill book.
It's canon and that's not going to change. The fact that you can find Moira's book in Vegas is proof enough of this.

Out of the question? no of coarse not, but the point of a nuclear war is to pretty much destroy everything of importance to your enemy, why would they leave DC standing at all?

The real reason DC is the way it is, is because Bethesda does not care about continuity or story or that kind of stuff, they have stated before that story just isn't something they care about. They wanted a post apocalyptic wasteland with a very large decaying urban city full or raiders and mutants and dungeons, it didn't matter to them that it was 200 years after a global nuclear war, and it didn't matter what came before it in the other games, they just wanted the whole setting to be really cool to their fans, which it is, its really fun to explore that area and it has a lot of cool stuff, I just wish they cared about continuity a bit more.

Bad continuity in anything just annoys the piss out of me.

It's fine continuity wise. Nukes just don't hit as hard in Fallout as they do in real life for some reason. A warhead landed on Black Mountain, but it didn't even disable the computers there, nevermind breaking the buildings. The Megaton nuke only destroyed what was in that crater. Hell, the nuke on the oil rig in Fallout 2 only destroyed that rig, it didn't even so much as break windows back on shore. In real life, the nuke that hit Black Mountain would have levelled Vegas, the one in Megaton would have annihilated the entire Capitol Wasteland, and the one on that oil rig would have sunk that oil tanker without a second thought.
I mean like taking the original turn-based combat and updating it, so its not so slow it makes every ADD kid cry out in terror.

If you think you can handle the Golden Geckoes (I think most of them are out hunting at 5-6 AM game time) in Crescent Canyon, head through there, and look through the footlockers and crates and such along the walls at some point while heading through. One case always has a full suit of Combat Armor, one has either a Radiation Suit or an Advanced Radiation suit, and one has a buncha meds in it.

Also, if you can handle the Nightstalkers and the Den Mother and want some decent guns, head into Morning Star Cavern nearby. At the end of the cave, there's a dead guy with Leather Armor, some stimpaks, and a duffle bag next to him with either a Lever-Action Shotgun, .44 Magnum Revolver, or a Hunting Rifle, in my experience. Then head to Nipton and become unstoppable up until New Vegas or so.

Then drop the isometric POV. I find it less immersive anyway, why take the word of an NPC that a brown smear of pixels is a rotten old couch when I can crouch and zoom in on the bugs infesting it instead?

Besides, it doesn't hurt Renegade Ops. That's real time and isometric.

The Isometric view is one of the things that made Fallout the way it was, along with its combat, its art style, its very dark comedy, its atmosphere.

How would people react if Blizzard made Diablo 3 into a FPS, the backlash would be insane.

If you like being a god amongst men max your sneak and small guns skill out, grab something silenced, grab the chinese stealth suit, and go bonkers. This, however, will make the game piss easy.

You can also try heavy weapons, just kick the door in and start spamming until everything is gone.

Remaking them as a third and first person real-time game would make millions, and if they go about it how I would have it done they wouldn't lose any of the dark comedy. The atmosphere would be even better, as you wouldn't be relying on random text tidbits in the bottom right to tell you what an area is like, and the art style they used on the 3D games is just fine.

And if you didn't like it they wouldn't gonna force you to buy or play it, so there's no reason to bitch and moan.

I did, it just happens that Deathclaws can now kill me in one hit because I have Lethal Headshots installed and they're at just the right height to just swipe my head clean off.

So the only real solution now is to run like a bitch and hope I can get high up before they catch me and break my legs.
