Is their any way of testing if it's powerful enough without having to buy both and actually try them out in that situation?
you can use maths and guide numbers and shit. most light modifiers will tell you how many stops you will loose.

A $40 16gb CF card will hold about 500 shots with RAW + JPG at max settings - in a 5D2.

I'm sure you can a find reasonably priced CF card large enough for your purposes.

The above option aside, you could use a student discount to make it cheaper, and alternatively, you could purchase Lightroom instead. It's significantly better for a photographer with no need for heavy photomanipulation. It's also a whole hell of a lot cheaper.

    64GB seems a bit excessive
I have a 4GB 80mb/s card and that gives a me a good 300 RAWs at 14MP. I rarely if ever take more than 200 anyway in one day.

Rawtherapee is an open source software. I think it is pretty similar to lightroom but free and if you can program you can even change the code yourself and compile it.

That is the beauty of open source. Every one who is interested in the project can participate and help make software available for everyone instead of just big company who mostly sell their software.

I tried my hand at studio-ish shots, the problem is I don't have a studio or a big space where to put a background so I just removed some crap from a wall in my room and framed the shots to avoid getting the ground or other rubbish in.

They are all handheld and lit only by ambient light, which is not your typical light bulb hanging from the ceiling, I have a huge white neon pointed to the ceiling that bounces light all over so basically my room is a giant softbox.

(the shot with the whole chair would have been much better if I did it with a telephoto to compress it more and avoid showing the opposite arm rest but due to space constraints a 50mm was the longest I could go with and I shot most of them from down up to avoid getting the floor in the shot)

As I said in my post it's just my room.

My room (where I sleep and work) is quite messy so I just shoved all the stuff from the least messy side behind the camera and snapped away.

For the lighting I just used ambient light, I changed a few years ago from your bog standard single light bulb hanging from the ceiling to a big neon which I placed over my wardrobe pointing to the ceiling on which it bounces off.

It's nearly as if I had a light the size of my ceiling basically so thanks to that my room is evenly lit and has no harsh shadows which helps on the rare occasions when I shoot something inside it.

I can take a shot of my room if you are curious to see how it is setup.

Went to the forest to test my new cam:

Didn't have my tripod so long exposures are understandably blurry. Also, does anyone also know any good methods of long exposures during daylight. Set my aperture to f22 and ISO to 100 and at 2 seconds in the shade it was still coming out wayyyy too bright.
