What is with all the hate with the RPS newsbot?
I'm not well versed in the art of news bot functions so I may come off as ignorant, but as a game journalism website it isn't their fault if the news bot catches articles that some members of FP find pointless.
Lets try to define the general pros and cons of that website:
Pros
*Quality: Many of us enjoyed the journalism that they shared.
*Featured lists: Whether it was about crazy sales or top 10 something-somethings it was always good to read these, as many found these useful.
*Humor: Sure there were some failed attempts at funny takes on news and game reviews but I for one found that almost all of them that I've read left me laughing afterwards.
*Down to Earth: They are defending your gamers rights, they hate abusive DRM, they don't want corporate control over your internet, all this makes them rather relatable.
Cons
*RockPaperNotch: They caught Minecraftmania a while ago and for the next couple of months most of the articles posted were about Minecraft. Sure a whole bunch of people enjoyed this, but as Notch became increasingly slower with updating the game, as well as taking many unwarrented vacations (plus lazy feature implementations), the members of FP started to resent their pre-purchase of Minecraft. They became betrayed by their trust in Mojang and in so favour of Minecraft declined here. RPS slowed down on the articles about Minecraft but there were still one to two articles posted per day, which began to annoy some of us Facepunchers. It's from this that most of the hate comes from now.
*RockPaperBlog: Many feel that their articles come off as less news and more life stories about games. Newsbots are to blame for giving you these articles, not FPS.
For those that have been on FP for a while will probably remember CsNation, we had a newsbot also ripping articles and reposting them here. It was great, kind've like RPS (without the piss take articles). Until two articles came up.
They posted that they had a BIG SECRET that they were going to share the next day (or something along those lines) and people here were torn on what to think about it and caused a lot of talk within the News Node. The next day they revealed what it was...
RUMORS OF A COUNTER-STRIKE BETA
Okay, fair enough. They don't post articles just for Facepunch. It is Counter-Strike news and very big news too. It's the newsbot that posted it on Facepunch, not CsNation themselves. But what did the majority of Facepunch think about this?
Facepunch didn't like this. Not. One. Bit. They didn't like the fact that they got pumped up so much, made themselves hyped up for extreme news that they would enjoy, only to find out this big secret is that there are rumors of Valve throwing CS-Source into a beta program. They bitched about it so much, blinded by their own rage to see how pointless throwing a fit about it actually is, that prompted the Mods and Garry to remove it for the public opinion.
Did CsNation do something wrong? No, Facepunch did something wrong, and at this point half mourned the loss of a great newsbot while the other half paraded in celebration.
Now the same (similar?) thing has happened. RPS is gone and been replaced with Shacknews and Bluenews. I think Shacknews is okay but I'm willing to bet that Bluenews is a ploy to show you that RPS actually provided content. If this has changed your opinion then please stop bitching about RPS and show support for it coming back, otherwise if you still don't like it then I'm sure you have your reasons.
I've re-read the OP and this has been a topic lately.
Just a little something I typed up in the Ask us about the forums thread.
