It's for my brother. He's looking at this neatgear router.

My question is: Can theses be use as one would use a wireless USB router? Like, do they have to be hooked up to a modem? We have a router and modem in my mom's room. So, I'm wondering if it can be used on it's own like a wireless USB router. Like, do I just have to to hook up the Ethernet cable to his PC to his router? This may seem like a dumb question, butI have pretty much no knowledge of networking or routers.

Combo modem & routers tend to suck hard anyway, so good riddance.

Got it myself, great with stock firmware, but even better with some aftermarket one's.
Also it's got a USB port for printers (or USB 3G modems with aftermarket firmware loaded onto it) and gigabit ethernet for all 4 LAN ports

it cant just get internet from nothing, you could possibly connect to the other router's wireless to create a bridge, and then connect through that, but then you might as well be getting a wireless card. What exactly are you trying to do?

Are you looking for a receiver (Plugging it into a computer to connect to a wireless network), a repeater (If the signal is weak in one area, you use the repeater to rebroadcast the signal) or a bridge (Connects to the wireless network, provides internet access to wired ethernet devices such as an older Xbox 360)? A DD-WRT compatible router can serve as a standard router, a repeater or a bridge.

I guess..? Like I said, I don't know much about networking or any of that.
He wants to have a wired connection to his PS3, it supposedly makes the connection better for online play.

And he can't hook it up directly to the main router via conventional ethernet cable?

No, the router is in my mom's room, which on the opposite side of the house. We tired to hook a cable up to his PC and to the PS3 (he has a temporary USB router), it worked, but it was slower than him just connecting wirelessly.

If the PS3 has built in wifi, it's probably going to be better than using an bridge connected to the PS3's ethernet port. It's still going over wifi at some point, the only thing that can reduce the latency would be directly connecting the PS3 to the wifi router in your mother's room with Ethernet.
