In the flash version at least, you could pay to get items, but it's not necessary at all. Mostly cosmetics. Besides, I'm pretty sure you can earn them either way, it's just faster with money.
How is it compared to the site version? I played that for ages.

I cant even play this because I get so much movement lag. It's frustrating as hell.

You don't play this game to grind. You play it to have fun.
Grinding isn't fun.

I just teleport to the highest group of people leveling or raiding the boss area. It's a bit risky, but you can level extremely quickly in those areas.

I used to play it and I can only find it fun if you band together with people, being alone is suicidal and boring unless your fucking masochistic.

Really fun game. I suggest playing the browser-version though, because the steam one isn't very good. I get a lot of movement lag and fullscreen is shit.
