Hey guys, I'm new to Facepunch and wanted to know if there were anyone out there listening to the latest Prog Metal bands out there. I was just hoping to share bands I liked and maybe find some new ones along the way. Here's a list of some of my favorite bands right now:

    (in no particular order)

    1. Meshuggah
    2. Animals As Leaders
    3. The Contortionist
    4. Tesseract
    5. Uneven Structure
    6. Mastodon
    7. Sithu Aye

This is just the seven that have been taking up most of my "recently played" portion of my iPod. There are many many more though

My problem with djent is that all bands seem to do the exact same thing pretty much and it gets pretty repeditive. Although there are occasionally really amazing bands like TesseracT and Scale The Summit. Nothing will ever be as good as Meshuggah though.

    I love Meshuggah and Tesseract.

Circles is an Aussie band that I believe fits this thread:

Hacktivist (more refreshing than most thanks to the rapping vocal style, which IMO fits perfectly with djent):

Honestly, almost all djent sounds the same, minus stuff like Meshuggah. It really seems like the next post-hot-topic-metalcore to me.

I agree with you. Although you're being a little harsh there. It's a good genre, just a bit same-y.

You know what I meant though, bands like Periphery, Tesseract, etc are filling in the void that was left behind by August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying, The Devil Wears Prada, etc.

    Djent isn't a genre.
I don't see how you can say that. People make music that has the same stylistic features and call it a certain thing.
Isn't that essentially the definition of a genre?

    Sorry, did I forget to mention it's a sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-genre?

    My mistake.

It's a guitar tone. I really don't think that can be considered a genre.

Djenty bands are better classified as math metal or prog metal. Djent is more a descriptive word than a genre.

If djent's to be considered a genre, Meshuggah shouldn't be considered a part of it imo. The majority of djent, which is new (almost a decade late), generally has a totally different style. If Meshuggah's lumped in the same category, I personally think Periphery, Animals As Leaders, and Tesseract do "djent" far more interesting and exciting than Meshuggah.

I can totally empathize with the non-genre argument. It seems more like an aggression meme. You can liken it to Metalcore in that sense, but the similarities stop there. In my ~internet~ experience most people use it as a descriptor rather than a genre.

Yeah I'm a bit annoyed that they're not doing a sideshow here in Adelaide, I'd prefer to see them do full sets and not have to wait around while crappy hardcore bands play.

I had a good time during the 30-40 minutes they got in Brisbane. But I would like to see them play a full set as well.

How were their sets? Good choice of songs?
I'm hoping for a Ziltoid song in Devy's set.

He played 2 Ziltoid songs, I missed the first 10 minutes, so he may have played 3.

Meshuggah played Bleed, Combustion, their newest song, and a couple others which I forgot.

Toss up between Meshuggah and Gojira for the best sets though. Devin had the best humour though. He got everyone to wave their hands around then started the song and started to yell at everyone to stop waving because he started the song.

they released a new album today apparently

also, this thread needs City of Ifa:
They're technically mathcore I guess, but their album Blue Shoes sounds kinda math rock/prog metalish IMO.
    It's really really fucking good.
